It’s hard to overstatethe value of ourFounda-tion. Fornearly 50 years,Lions ClubsInternationalFoundation (LCIF)
has supported the life-changing work of Lions, serving some of the most vulnerable people andthe neediest places on Earth.
LCIF will play a key role in supporting ournew global service framework and reaching ourLCI Forward goal of serving 200 millionpeople per year by 2021. That kind of life-changing service requires the commitment thatonly Lions have. But it also requires funding.LCIF supports the work of Lions through grantfunding so we can have a bigger impact, bringing long-term help to more people thanever before.
LCIF supports Lions, but how will you supportLCIF? Every act of kindness and every dollarmatters when you’re investing in hope. Everydollar flows back into our communities throughthe effort of Lions. And each dollar is spentwhere it will have the most impact.
I encourage you to work with your club tomake a donation to LCIF. Your support willmake a real difference in the life of someonewho needs it most, so please give today.
LCIF Reaches $1 Billion in Grant FundingIn January, LCIF crossed a historic milestone by surpassing US$1 billion in grants funded! This in-credible accomplishment was made possible by the generosity of Lions. But it’s only the beginning. In order to support our goal of serving 200 million individuals annually, LCIF is preparing for an in-crease in Lions-led projects by committing to raise US$50 million annually by its 50th anniversary in2018.

Diabetes will be announced as
LCI's new global service focus at our
Centennial convenon in Chicago.
More than 422 million people
worldwide have diabetes, and this
number is increasing in every country.
Diabetes is a leading cause of
blindness, amputations, kidney
failure, heart attacks and stroke and
early death. The International
Diabetes Federation estimates that by
2040 there will be more than 642
million living with the disease. As
your club plans its events for next
year, consider a project related to
Diabetes.

We Save SightSince 1925, aiding the blind and visuallyimpaired has been at the forefront of LionsClubs Internaonal’s mission. LCIF has supported this work through the SightFirstProgram and other sight iniaves. The SightFirst Program SightFirst has helped restoresight to more than 30 million people aroundthe world since its incepon in 1990. With the goal of combang all avoidable causes of blindness, SightFirst has provided millions ofsight-restoring surgeries, created or improvedhundreds of eye care centers and trainedthousands of eye care professionals.
Restoring Sight for DanielNinety-year-old Daniel Tumbo lived in a remotevillage in Kenya and had been blind for nearly10 years. With eye care virtually inaccessibleand unaware his vision could be restored,Daniel was resigned to his fate. But a neighborconvinced him to visit a Lions outreach camp, where he was told his eyes could be operated
on at the Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital inNairobi, Kenya. Aer receiving cataract surgery, Daniel was a new person. Back in his village, hetold his neighbors that he had “gone to Nairobias luggage but came back as a human being.”He was able to see his four children and sawtwo of his grandchildren for the first me. For him, sight is life.

A young lady (Celeste) approached one of ourLions members at a Royals hockey game askingabout obtaining assistance. She has a service dogand uses a harness for her dog. The one she hasbeen using was malfunconing. New harnesses are to expensive for her to replace. Geng a new harness would mean Celeste could connue to go out independently in public with her servicedog. Since being matched, the dogs presence andthe tasks she does for her has meant she hasbeen able to go in public without a familymember, take buses on my own, and even beginvolunteering in the community.
The L&L Commiee also helped out a young lady with a new harness for her dog. It is special madeso she can handle the dog with her medicalcondion & it has been ordered & paid for to a tune of 500.00.
Leer from CelesteI went down toBrigadoon(Assistance DogsInternaonal accredited agencyBrigadoon Service
Dogs) last weekto do my follow-up public accesstest, and wealso got theharness. I've
been adjusng Ebony (my dog) to it slowly over the past week. I have a me booked with my brother later this week to get some photographs, but I've aached a couple I took on my phone.
The harness -beaufully made.
LION/Lioness CommitteeI have noced so many improvements over the one we had before. It fits Ebony perfectly, and she can move very easily in it. When she liesdown, it doesn't pinch or pull anywhere and sheis snoozing within minutes. But when she getsup, everything is sll in place and ready to go. When I reach down, the handle fits right into the middle of my hand.
I've already noced a difference in having the harness. It is perfect forimproving my stabilityand also ensuring Ebonyis comfortable! Todaywe went to the TerryFox exhibit at themuseum, and I was ableto look around and fullyenjoy the exhibitwithout geng off-balance.
Thank you again,Sincerely,Celeste

Angela, Pat and Margaret spent time being Ducky and/or Lucy Lion while going around tofour schools and pre-schools telling/acting out the duck story and advertising the event. Evenour Club members helped by lending tales chairs, pools (Felicity, Alison, Ev, Theresa, Di-ane). Pat P. borrowed, picked up and returned several tents from the philharmonic group.Special thanks to SFRC for allowing Bev to give us many stuffies to give out as prizes (and toBev who had to clean, sort, and deliver them to the event). Again Bev and her husband Corycame and picked up all the games etc. on Friday night, delivered them to the field at 8:00 a.m.and after loading up after the event brought everything back to lock-up. A long day indeed forthem! Huge thanks!!
Finally I want to recognize “our” stud muffin, Godfrey for the hours and hours he put into thisevent. From measuring the games area at the flats and making large and small maps of wherethings could go to fixing up the games, making signs, taking pictures so next year it is easy toknow how to set up, for allowing his precious garage to be a duck storage for about a month!!As you can see, it takes a huge amount of volunteers to put together and run an event such asthis. It was a very successful day. Watching the community come together to play, laugh, vis-it, and cheer on the ducks is heart warming!

Calling all Lions
Come out and be one of 30 Lioness & Lions to ride a bicycle
built for 30 on a 2 km ride through Esquimalt in support of the
Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The Heart & Stroke Big Bike is a team event geared towards community Teams made up of 30
enthusiastic riders each commit to raise $50 or more. The Bike is a wonderful instrument for
raising awareness of the Heart and Stroke Foundation mission and raises the profile of Lioness
& Lions in our community.
This unique platform showcases the philanthropy of local groups, acting on their desire to sup-
port a cause that is so near and dear to the hearts of all of us in some way. Big Bike has main-
tained its popularity over 26 years through the contagious spirit it creates. Co-workers, neigh-
bours and friends gather and team build during the events. They come together to battle heart
disease and stroke – but at the end of the day what they remember is the great fun they had and
the connection that was made. If you would like to join the Big Bike Team @ 2pm, June 13th!Where: Bullen Park, 527 Fraser St, Victoria, BC V9A 6H7.
Please contact me Brian Morin 250-589-8709 or [email protected]. If you would like to join
our Heart and Stroke Team as an individual let me know as soon as possible. If you would like
to sponsor your Zone Chair please contact me or better still sponsor a member in your club.
It's a really fun event, so don't miss out! Come out and enjoy the fun and support a good cause!
I have been told that the
peddling is NOT strenu-
ous and that there is no
reason to be concerned
that the ride would be
difficult. So don't hesi-
tate. I would love to see
each and every club rep-
resented in this event.
Besides, it should be fun!

Dear Lions and much appreciated volunteers for the Victoria Day Parade:
I would like to offer a quick note and sincere thank you for another job well done.
Today we received a very nice thank you letter from Kelly Kurta (see above), the Executive Director for the Greater
Victoria Festival Society, with a wonderful donation that will go to benefit Camp Shawnigan in the amount of $2,000.
As Lions, we know how much Camp Shawnigan means to Lionism and those who are able to participate or benefit
from the camperships at this amazing facility. For the Volunteers who helped without being a member of a local Li-
ons club, we so very much appreciate your assistance and support – in our minds and hearts, you are LIONS and the
living example of a giving and loving spirit.
As Kelly says in her letter above, "we can't do it without everybody's commitment and participation".
For all of you who participated in body and spirit, thank you again and over the next days we will debrief and learn
from this year’s parade and make next years even better.
Thank you also to all the Lions members of the West Shore, Central Saanich and Capital City Lions Clubs.
We are Looking forward to working with you again soon and wish you all the best in Lionism.
