Well another year is underway. Soon the rains will be

back and all clubs will be busy again.

I need not remind Clubs that have Gaming Grants, or plan to apply for one, that you need to have your AGM completed by the end of September and an annual Club Budget prepared for membership approval. If any Club needs

assistance with an AGM Agenda requirements I am happy to assist.

The Multiple District Convention this year is slated for October 12 to 14 in Surrey BC. At the Sheraton Guilford Hotel 15269 - 104 Avenue. Which is great, no mountain passes or long drives to think about. (See pages 4 & 5).

19-I-2 INFORMER August 2017 2

I grew up in a town called Batala, in Punjab - a state in the northwest of India. Like many young children, I dreamed of conquering the world. However, the means to this end were more important to me. I wanted to lead through kindness. I dreamed of changing not just Batala, but the entire world. In 1974, when I first stood in the presence of Lions, I knew that I had aligned myself with an organization that could actually help me achieve my dream. We Lions are one with the people of the world. In Sanskrit, it is called “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” or “World is my Family.” The key to making the world one family, or one home, rests within us - the 1.4 million Lions who dedicate themselves to the needs of others. If each Lion serves at least 10

people per month, we will easily achieve our goal of serving 200 million people each year-tripling our

current service output. Service to others defines who we are. It is our very reason to exist as a global organization. Our motto puts it in terms others can easily understand - “We Serve.” As I prepared for my year as your international president, those words kept coming back to me. That’s why I am proud to have “We Serve” represent my theme. Our motto is timeless. It is as

relevant today as it was in 1917, and it will inspire us into our next century of service. At the 2015 In-ternational Convention in Honolulu, I said, “Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.” Our most auspicious time-the new century-has come.

INDIAN GREETING “NAMASTE” MEANS “I SALUTE THE DIVINE IN YOU.” Most people spend their lifetime in pursuit of God and inner peace. My worship of God is to serve His living manifestations on earth. My peace and happiness come when those around me enjoy peace and happiness. THIS PHILOSOPHY HAS SHAPED MY PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL LIFE.

all requests are considered on their individual merits & it is up to the individual clubs to accept or reject them.

19-I District Lion Lioness Committee

The committee was formed in September 1995 as the successor to the “Easter Seal Committee” which functioned in Greater Victoria for many years to assist the “Easter Seal Society” & later the BC Lions Society for Crippled Children with such needs as the Easter Seal Campaign, the Lucky Leo Lottery, etc. At that time the Lions Society of BC decided that as they owned the rights for the name “Easter Seal”, the Lions Clubs of the area could no longer use the name ‘Easter Seal Committee”. The option of changing the name or disbanding was offered, and the group decided to continue under the name “Greater Victoria Lions & Lioness Committee”. By late 1996, membership grew to include all clubs on Southern Vancouver Island. Each year the Committee has considered requests for assistance that are received through the BCLS Office & from other sources (usually

Lion/Lioness Clubs). These requests are those that are not covered by mandate of the Society or other social agencies or charities. Usually the aid is directed towards individual rather than organizations & is always referred to individual Lion/Lioness Clubs for action. Some projects are under-taken by a group of clubs pooling their resources. At that time the committee had no bank account or funding of its own & acted as a clearing house for projects. The needs of the clients are assessed & often sources of aid are suggested before referred to the clubs. For some time there was a move to establish a mandate for the Committee, with set guidelines. It was decided by the members that the mandate is, there is no mandate & all requests are considered on their individual merits & it is up to the individual clubs to accept or reject them. Some

projects, such as computers, wigs, vans have been excluded from consideration & others will undoubtedly receive the same fate in future. “Update” Each year the committee has considered requests for assistance that were received from other clubs in I-2 & I-3. We have also received requests from up island but are leaving these requests to all Lions clubs in District 19-I. In 2002 District 19-I Cabinet included organization on the cabinet committee list. That year our name changed District 19-I Lion Lioness Committee & they report quarterly to the 19-I District Cabinet. Outside of the province funding is not considered. The committee do not support wigs, computers, and purchase of vans. Requests for food: The L&L Committee will do a needs assessment for a client and may consider an emergency situation. If accepted the committee will contact the closest grocery store & use a gift card with a hole punched in so tellers will know no liquor or cigarettes. It is strictly for food.

"We believe it’s the biggest international parade probably that there’s ever been. We have lions from many of our 210 countries that are marching in their own native garb and its really a beautiful event," said Lions Club International President Bob Corlew.

CHICAGO – About 15,000 Lions marched in a Parade of Nations along State Street as Chicago played host to the 100th anni-versary convention of the International Lions Club. People from more than 125 countries showcased their countries during the parade, taking up blocks and blocks of the street as they marched.

About 30,000 of those lions are in Chicago for the convention at McCormick Place, focusing on their core missions, including vision issues, hunger, and youth programs. In 100 years, the Lions Club has gone from a Chicago startup to a world power in service.
