THE POWER OF ACTION LIKE A MIGHTY RIVER Many cities grow and prosper along the banks of a river. In India, we worship our longest river – the Ganga, or Ganges. We call it “Ganga Maa,” meaning “Ganges Mother,” similar to how Americans use the term “Mother Nature.” Why is the Ganges our mother, or object of worship? Because it gives life. It feeds plants. Plants feed humans and animals. It enables trade and travel. It refreshes itself and the landscape continuously. In India, hundreds of millions of people live by the blessings of the Ganga. A Lions club is very similar. Over the last 100 years, “our river” has formed tributaries in 47,000+ communities (clubs). Now we must constantly refresh our clubs with new ideas and projects and make our river meander through every community in the world. THE POWER OF ACTION We have a presence in most communities around the world. To convert our presence into powerful service, we must infuse the power of action into each member. The key to action is to engage each and every member both socially and professionally. It is only when we serve our members first that we can serve the community. A Lion leader has two hands—one to serve the community and one to serve Lion members. Let us choose projects that maximize the value of each expenditure, member and hour so that we may serve as many urgent needs as possible.

We're 1,445,591 Lions strong—and counting! Dear Fellow Lions,

I am pleased to announce that we just surpassed our all-time membership record of 1,445,591 Lions!

I want to thank each and every one of you for your dedication to changing lives and growing our association's hu-manitarian impact over the past year. Thanks to you, we are positioned to enter our second century of service stronger than ever before. Thanks to you, Lions clubs are serving in more communities around the world. And thanks to you, we are helping more people than ever before.

July 2017 Lions Monthly Diabetes Newsletter - - -PART ONE Tom Smarsh - Diabetes Chairperson MD-19 Raising Diabetes Awareness, Preserving Sight The World Health Organization estimates that over 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, a growing world epidemic that is expected to affect over 642 million by 2040. Diabetes and Vision Loss People with diabetes are at risk of losing sight due to diabetes eye disease. It is the leading cause of new onset blindness in many countries. All people with diabetes – both Type 1 and Type 2 – are at risk. That’s why everyone with diabetes should get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. Diabetes can lead to other possible complications, including heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, leg amputation, and nerve damage. In pregnancy, poorly controlled diabetes increases the risk of fetal death and other complications. Lions and Diabetes Awareness With these statistics and concerns in mind, Lions have taken action through the Diabetes program. Our work supports diabetes awareness, education, prevention, detection, control, and research. Joining Forces to Fight Diabetes Lions work with local community partners and national diabetes associations to promote diabetes education and awareness throughout the year. We also commemorate World Diabetes Day, an annual campaign led by the International Diabetes Federation on November 14. Diabetes will be announced as LCI's new global service focus at our Centennial convention in Chicago.

More than 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, and this number is increasing in every country. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, amputations, kidney failure, heart attacks and stroke and early death. The International Diabetes Federation estimates that by 2040 there will be more than 642 million living with the disease. As your club plans its events for next year, consider a project related to Diabetes. (See page 4)

Invite health care professionals, such as doctors, nurses or certified diabetes educators as speakers

projects that can provide outreach to underserved populations who are at high risk for diabetes or living with the disease.

Solicit feedback:

Find out how to further support Lions in planning diabetes projects.

Report diabetes projects:

Share news about diabetes projects with the multiple district or district public relations chairperson. Report your activities to MyLCI.

Diabetes Overview Diabetes contributes to more than 5 million deaths a year, making it the eighth-leading cause of death in the world. And the num-bers are rising. Lions and Leos are confronting this global health emergency by raising awareness of diabetes through Strides events, expanding access to care through screening and treatment programs, and improving quality of life through diabetes camps and community recreational programs. We believe we can help prevent and control this global epidemic by uniting Lions and Leos around this cause. More than 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, and this number is increasing in every country. Diabetes is a leading cause of blind-ness, amputations, kidney failure, heart attacks and stroke, and early death. The International Diabetes Federation estimates that by 2040 there will be more than 642 million living with the disease.

Organize diabetes service projects and activities in your area by becoming a diabetes chairperson in your club, district or multiple district. Motivate Li-ons to undertake service projects that:

Provide programs and assistance to underserved children and adults who are living with diabetes.

The club, district and multiple district diabetes chair-persons are appointed by the club president, district governor and council chairperson, respectively. By working together, diabetes chairpersons can organ-ize effective service projects to help fight diabetes in their communities.

Diabetes Chairperson Responsibilities Set goals:

Evaluate the effectiveness of current diabetes pro-jects. Develop goals and an overall action plan. Submit the plan for the club president's, district gov-ernor’s or council chairperson’s approval.
