BAE had a requirement to modify the existing Tornado Paint Staging system to allow the end user safe access and egress to the Fuselage and Wing Areas of the Tornado aircraft to enable paint preparation and application at its RAF Marham base in Kings Lynn, Norfolk.

The existing Tornado Paint Staging was collected by Youngman from RAF Marham for modification, before Youngman’s Design Engineers began the process of modifying the design and drawings to accommodate the latest requirement. Once completed, this was then approved at a design sign-off meeting in late 2012. Following this meeting, production drawings were then authorised and issued to manufacturing in order to implement the required changes.

The modified Tornado Paint Staging's were delivered to RAF Marham on the 23rd January 2013 and a trial was conducted on a Tornado Aircraft. The trial proved successful and a final design sign-off Meeting is scheduled for Thursday 28th February 2013. Following sign-off a further 5 units now require modification and delivery and installation at RAF Marham. Ben Hoyle

Ecolite-H2 gathering momentumFollowing the launch of the hydrogen fuel cell powered Ecolite-H2 at the Executive Hire Show, we are happy to report the launch has so far been a huge success.

The objective of the launch was to secure trials with strategically important rental companies and end users to aid in the field testing and commercialisation.

We had a huge amount of interest from all the large national rental companies and a couple of the country’s largest contractors to be involved in product trials.

Youngman and TCP are now coordinating the trials will which run until the end of the year. As part of the launch Youngman tested some new social media and digital marketing techniques which also helped to generate a huge amount of interest from around the world including the US. This resulted in the Ecolite-H2 being featured in all major industry related press and across a number of websites and blogs. Ross Dryden

A good job well done by everyone involved in the Hawk Trainer Jet MPAS projectSome innovative and sometimes downright brilliant methods were adopted to overcome the huge project that was the Hawk Trainer Jet Multi-Purpose Access System (MPAS).

The project, which consisted of 118 individual units, meant that full cooperation of both the production and quality departments was needed to achieve the delivery deadlines. Labour, which was pulled from all parts of the factory, demonstrated the depth of skill levels that we have in the business which can be drawn upon when needed.

As the project developed and we adapted to the ever increasing demands made upon us, systems and methods were implemented that allowed us to meet the demanding schedule. Inspection records, for example,

were at a level never before seen as almost every single nut, bolt and washer had to be documented against theunit to which it was fitted. By the end of the project, there were six volumes of check sheets, first-off and traceability records.

As Christmas approached, it just got busier day by day. More and more welders and fabricators were assigned to the project which meant that no sooner had I completed one job, there were another half a dozen waiting for me.

As the front line inspector on this project I would like to take this opportunity in thanking everyone involved in the MPAS project for their help and cooperation in achieving the tough deadlines set. Bring out the next one, we’re ready! Geoff White

January ended up being a very busy month in the H&S Department...

An opportunity came up while G1 was quiet to look at the processes related to G1 and to risk assess them. Rob Utting worked with myself to draft an initial risk assessments and these have subsequently been reviewed by Bill Hutt, Dave McFedries and the rest of the G1 team to ensure that nothing has been missed.

What looked like being a few risk assessments ended up with a total of forty seven with the possibility of more relating to maintenance tasks. The risk assessments will be used as the basis for Safe Systems of Work – documents which ensure that the safety related information colleagues need to be aware of is highlighted. The Product Engineering Department will be providing support to complete the Work Processes linked to the risk assessments.

In addition to G1, exhibitions at the RICOH arena in Coventry figured large, with risk assessments for both the new range of Telescopic products and the new Hydrogen powered Ecolite being required before the products could be demonstrated on the stands at the different shows. Catherine Newhall

Organisational changes across Mechanical Plant & International

As some colleagues know there are a number of keen bakers dotted around the Youngman site.

With the recent Comic Relief Bake –Off on BBC1, an idea took shape and as a result, a number of colleagues have volunteered or should that be have been roped in to, in the immortal words of Mel Giedroyc – “Bake for Comic Relief”.

The Bake Sale will be taking place on 14 & 15 March 2013 in the Staff Canteen and also the Customer Service Office where a range of baked goods will be available.

After forty one years of service with Youngman, Geoff Whiteley has finally hung up his rivet gun as colleagues in the factory said farewell to him on 25th January.

Geoff has seen many changes to the business, joining in October 1972 as a labourer in the Alloy Department, when the business was John Sadd (Stephens & Carter). In 1973 he trained and later that year successfully became a Ladder Machine Operator on £67.50/week. Geoff continued working through the SGB Youngman era and on to Youngman Group Ltd where he ended up in the Ali Build area. The team at Youngman wish Geoff a very long and happy retirement. This is my second time running of the London Marathon and after having such a great experience last year I felt the need to come back and do it all again. I will be raising money for my friend Anthony Browne who made a huge effort to support me at last year’s event.

I will again be fundraising at the 2013 Virgin London Marathon for the Headway Charity set up to give help and support to people affected by brain injury. Following a serious car accident Anthony requires 24 hour care and is supported by the good work Headway provides. Now aged 42, through the support of his family, friends and his carers, Anthony is slowly getting re-established.

I am delighted to have gained a place in the 2013 Virgin London Marathon. It was always my ambition to run this race with 2 main goals; to raise awareness and funds for

this little known charity that is providing the much needed support for Anthony and to crack the 4 hour barrier. I have spent the last 18 months training with several half marathons and other races to prepare for one of my biggest challenges.

We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations. Simply go online at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MarkCarpenter or complete the sponsorship form in the reception to make a donation. Thank you from Anthony and myself. Mark
