Greetings from our Pastor Bruce Marchiano is a professional actor and Christian! Bruce played the role of the Lord Jesus in The Visual Bible's motion picture The Gospel According to Matthew. In playing the role he approached every scene as a love scene. Why? Because the Lord Jesus loves people! All people. Everybody. No exception. Even when people are messing up He still loves them! And that’s what makes Jesus so incredibly attractive! People know He really loves them! People know He not only loves them but likes them and wants to bring out the best in them. He looks past the problems in their life and sees the possibilities. The Dirty, Old Basket

A man went to his pastor and explained that he was disgruntled with going to church because he wasn't getting anything out of it. The pastor picked up a dirty, old basket and told him to go to the well, fill it with water; then bring it back. The man did as he was told, but by the time he returned the water had dripped out of the basket. The pastor told him to go back to the well again - three more times, actually - and each time the man returned with no water in the basket. Frustrated, the man asked what's the point of keep going to the well since he was returning with no water. The pastor smiled and said, "The point is not in returning with water but in going to the well. After all, the water has cleaned a dirty, old basket."

Bits N Pieces 2-4-6-8 Who do you appreciate

Pastor Apprecia on Month,

observed every October, has

unlikely detractors: pastors. Some

say it makes them uncomfortable

because other staff members

deserve apprecia on too. Some

worry churchgoers will think

they’re fishing for gi$s. Others joke

they dislike Pastor Apprecia on

Month because October is only 31

days long!

On RelevantMagazine.com, Pastor Jon Qui- admits

that pastors receive quite a bit of both cri cism and

praise. His proposal? A broader shi$ in church culture

toward year-round mutual thankfulness. “Let’s kill

Pastor Apprecia on Month and rename it Single Mom

Month or Nursery Worker Month,” he writes. “That

seems a be-er fit, don’t you think?”

A prayer for peace St. Francis of Assisi, an Italian Catholic friar, is commemorated on October 4. Though it’s unclear whether this famous “peace prayer” was his, it reflects his gentle spirit as an ardent Christ follower: Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is error, truth; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying to ourselves that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Aw-fall!

Share some laughs—or groans—with these autumn-themed jokes:

• What did the tree say to autumn? “Leaf me alone!”

• What did one autumn leaf say to another? “I’m falling for you.”

• How do you fix a broken pumpkin? With a pumpkin patch.

• Why are trees very forgiving? Because in the fall they “let it go” and in the spring they “turn over a new leaf.”

• How do leaves get from place to place? With autumn-mobiles.

• What’s the ra o of pumpkin’s circumference to its diameter? Pumpkin pi.

Just plant it

As the church year wraps up, many Bible readings address the end times and Jesus’ return at an unknown date (unknown to all but God the Father, that is). Specific beliefs about the Second Coming vary throughout Christendom, but our attitude about that momentous event

affects how we live right now.

“Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces,” Martin Luther reportedly said, “I would still plant my apple tree.” Instead of constantly despairing about this broken-down world, we can remain determined to serve God and our neighbors, planting seeds of life and hope in the process.

Session Highlights Greetings from the Session, The Session met on Sept 11, 2019 (aka – 9-11- We will never forget!) for its regular monthly meeting. Two elders were absent; a quorum was present. Pastor John opened the meeting with prayer. The business meeting began at 7:05 p.m. The minutes for July were read and approved. There was no meeting for August. The Session met informally twice during Aug. to discuss and clarify business already approved. No formal actions were taken at either meeting. The clerk reported that four new bound volumes of Newsletters, Annual Reports and Session Minutes were added to those already in the office. All records are up-to-date through 2018. We are good for another 10 years before new volumes need to be added. Pastor John conducted 2 weddings in Sept. – Joanne Scott’s daughter, Krystal and her fiancé Andrew; Tom Clayville and fiancé Jena. Session wishes both couples long and happy unions. (Prayers for John and Linda as Linda has knee surgery)

There will be no Deacon Yard Sale this fall. Gather your donations for spring! If you need storage, see a deacon about limited storage at the church. Thank you to Dottie and Dan for their willingness to act as lay readers during worship. A person to change the banners is still needed. See Kathy Poulton or Carleen Clayville for info. Thank you to Bob for keeping everything so clean and to Barbra for the love and care she shows for keeping us all on schedule. We are better because of you both. Our Reunion Sunday was enjoyed by the congregation. There were several out of town visitors present. It was so wonderful to see June Stoller. Thanks to the Fellowship Committee for all of the good food and their work to set up. Thanks to Dan Wittman for being the chef. Session would like feedback about having this event in the future. Don’t forget that Pastor Appreciation Sunday will be Oct 13th. Of course, we appreciate our pastor every day and especially on Sunday. Love you, John!!!!

The renters at the manse are doing well; church carpets have been cleaned; front window repair complete; working on roof replacement over the church offices; broken entry door window repaired and installed. We are looking Goood! The PNC has finalized the Church information form and Session voted to accept it. The document will go to the Presbytery Committee on Ministry for final approval, then it will be sent to the PC(USA) web site. The PNC should be getting replies by late fall. Be patient! Great things happen slowly and in due order. Next Session meeting will be on Oct 9th. Don’t forget your donation to the Peacemaking Offering on Oct 6th. Drive carefully; It’s Fall; Lots of trucks and harvest equipment on the roads. Enjoy the fall colors and garden produce. See you in Church! Respectfully submitted, Kathy Poulton, Clerk of Session

Unimaginable impact You don’t know how many people have been strengthened because you asked God to encourage them; how many people have been healed because you prayed for their bodies; how many spiritual runaways have come home because you prayed for their souls. None of us may ever know the true effects of our prayers this side of death. But we do know this: History belongs to the intercessors. —John Ortberg, The Life You’ve Always Wanted

NOODLE MAKING

Beyond the building

The Chrisan does not go to the temple to worship. The Chrisan takes

the temple with him or her. Jesus lis us beyond the building and pays

the human body the highest compliment by making it his

dwelling place, the place where he meets with us.

Tight Circles

A classmate gave my family a registered collie that had become too old to breed puppies. We soon learned this beautiful dog had, sadly, spent much of her life inside a small pen. She would only walk in tight circles. She couldn’t fetch or run in a straight line. And even with a large yard in which to play, she thought she was fenced in. The first Christians, many who were Jews, were used to being fenced in by the Mosaic law. Though the law was good and had been given by God to convict them of sin and lead them to Jesus (GALATIANS 3:19-25), it was time to live out their new faith based in God’s grace and the freedom of Christ. They hesitated. After all this time, were they really free? We may have the same problem. Perhaps we grew up in churches with rigid rules that fenced us in. Or we were raised in permissive homes and are now desperate for the security of rules. Either way, it’s time to embrace our freedom in Christ (GALATIANS 5:1). Jesus has freed us to obey Him out of love (JOHN 14:21) and to “serve one another humbly in love” (GALATIANS 5:13). An entire field of joy and love is open for those who realize “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (JOHN 8:36). —Mike Wittmer

Presbyterian Women The Burley Presbyterian Women met on Saturday, September 14 and made some plans for Fall. The plans were discussed, motion made, 2nd, voted and passed. The schedule is as follows:

Saturday, October 5 – Women’s Presbytery in Rigby—9:30 am Monday, October 14 – Noodle making starts. This year we will be making noodles only 3 days, and packaging the days after making noodles. The P W has purchased the attachments to make noodles for our Kitchen Aid mixer – courtesy of Darla Holl. We will still need people to roll the noodles, and place them on the tables to dry. Please contact us to volunteer your time. Darla and Julie Germann will head up making Berok, if there is enough interest. Volunteers will be needed to help with this project. Please contact to volunteer. Harvest Luncheon and bazaar will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 11 am to 2 pm. We will need food and items for sale donated, and will sell the noodles there. Our Annual Christmas Brunch and cookie swap will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 10 am.

Please mark your calendars and plan on participating on these calendar dates!

A look at beauty

Remember kaleidoscopes — those tubes you hold up to your eye and point toward the light to see color-ful shapes? When the far end of the optical instrument is turned, fragments of material inside an “object cell” shift and mirrors set at angles reflect light through the pieces, forming ever-changing patterns. A multi-hued flower might become sunlight through a round stained-glass window or fireworks on a clear night. Various materials can be placed in the cell — tiny figures, twisted bits of metal, lace, viscous liquid — but often broken bits of glass are used, to beautiful effect! In fact, David Brewster, inventor of the kaleidoscope in 1817, named it after the Greek word kalos, for “beauty.” Everyone feels broken, twisted or shattered at times. But when God’s perfect light shines in and through us, reflecting among the fragments of our imperfect lives, we, too, become beautiful. Out of our sinfulness and brokenness shines the beauty of compassion, kindness, perseverance, hope, love — delightful patterns to brighten this hurting world.

Victory in Our Spiritual Battles On the basis of the salvation God has provided for us, the Scriptures lay out practical guidelines by which we can have victory in our spiritual battles. Have Confidence in God. The first decision we must make to be freed from Satan’s power is to choose to trust God. We must acknowledge our helplessness, sinfulness, and lost condition: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). Then we must accept the free gift of salvation He has offered us in Christ and stand before God clothed in His Son’s righteous-ness. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 6:23). God’s Word tells us, “Not by works of righteous-ness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5). “I also count all things loss … that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith” (Phil. 3:9). Submit to God and Resist Satan. Although Christ has given us authority over Satan (1 John 4:4), we can exercise it only as we submit ourselves to God and resist the enemy (Eph. 6:11; James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8-9). Be Aware of Satan’s Strategies. Satan can take advantage of us if we are “ignorant of his devices” (2 Cor. 2:11). For example, by harboring anger, we “give place to the devil” (Eph. 4:27); by depriving our marriage partner of sexual intimacy, we give Satan an opportunity to tempt us (1 Cor. 7:5); by placing an unqualified person in a position of leadership in the church, we take the chance of making him/her vulnerable to pride and to “fall into the same condemnation as the devil” and “the snare of the devil” (1 Tim. 3:6-7).

Put on the Armor of God. Using the metaphor of a well-equipped Roman soldier, Paul told us how we can be prepared for spiritual warfare (Eph. 6:11-18). The belt of truth. Since Satan depends on deceit to maintain his power, our first line of defense is to be truthful. We must never distort or misrepresent the truth, regardless of any advantage we might gain by doing so. The breastplate of righteousness. Any sin in our life leaves us open to Satan’s attack. Even though we are given the righteousness of Christ (2 Cor. 5:21), we must still continually put on the protection of holy living.

The shoes of the gospel of peace. With our feet firmly planted on the truth that we are at peace with God and that He is on our side, we can stand firmly against Satan’s attacks. The shield of faith. In order to quench the “fiery darts” of Satan’s temptations, we must trust and believe what God has said about every area of our life. The helmet of salvation. This is the confidence that there is coming in the future a great victory celebration. It’s also referred to as “the hope of salvation”(1 Thess. 5:8). This helmet protects us against Satan's two-edged sword of discouragement and doubt.

The sword of the Spirit. Since the Word of God is the basis of our faith, we need to learn how to wield it with authority. Scripture is our best offensive weapon against the devil (Matt. 4:1-11). After he described the armor, Paul said that we are to be in constant prayer. Prayer expresses our dependence on God. We can fight against Satan only “in the [strength of the] Lord and in the power of His might” (Eph. 6:10). In the power of Christ with the armor of the Spirit we will be victors.
