    19/44YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING?Children who are not potty-trained need to wear a swim diaper.Long hair needs to be tied-back to help them swim without thedistraction of hair in the face. Although not required, wesuggest that girls wear a one piece suit so that they do nothave to adjust it while swimming.

CAN I WATCH MY CHILD’S LESSON? Yes! We require that parents stay during lessons but ask thatparents stay within the seating areas so that the children arenot distracted.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING BAD WEATHER?The decision to cancel classes due to inclement weather willbe made as early as possible. We will notify you of anycancellations as soon as we can.

All sessions have 2 inclement weather make up dates set in caseclasses are cancelled. However, the YMCA can only guarantee 6classes per session. Inclement weather make-up days aretypically on Fridays, same time.

WHAT IF MY CHILD CANNOT PARTICIPATE?Once a session has begun, if the child is pulled out of the clby the parents/guardians, the YMCA will only issue a credit.refunds will be issued.

WHAT IF WE MISS A CLASS?Refunds and/or make-up classes will not be offered for misclasses.

WHAT IF MY CHILD IS AFRAID OF THE WATER? If your child is fearful of water, our instructors will be limitein their ability to help during group lessons. Most fears comfrom a lack of exposure to water, resulting in uncertainty ofthe water. In order for children to learn to swim, they mustwilling to attempt the skills that are being taught.

We recommend helping your child get adjusted to water byplaying in the bathtub. Water on and around a child’s face be an overwhelming experience the first time it happens. Hthem prepare before they arrive at lessons. Also considerprivate swim lessons for one on one attention.

    What is childhood obesity?

Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition thatoccurs when a child is well above the normal weight for

his or her age and height. Childhood obesity often startschildren on the path to health problems that were onceconfined to adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressureand high cholesterol. Childhood obesity can also lead topoor self-esteem and depression.

What are the causes of childhood obesity?

Lifestyle issues — too little activity and too many caloriesfrom food and drinks — are the main contributors tochildhood obesity. However, genetic and hormonal factorsmay play a role as well.

What can we do to fight childhood obesity?

One of the best strategies to reduce childhood obesity isto improve the diet and exercise habits of your entirefamily. Try a group wellness class or go swimming to-gether. Take your children grocery shopping with you andallow them to pick out a new fruit or vegetable to try.

YMCA ANNUAL CAMPAIGNFOR A BETTER US

Because of you, youth experienceachievement, relationships and belonging. Alina, a single mother, left an abusive relationship to find hope

for both herself and her children at the YMCA. "My childrenare much happier at camp. They love learning about what Christcan do for them.” Because of the Y, Alina's children were able toturn their pain into happiness and start their journey to healing.

Because of you, youth find confidence and joy

Gary Mohr, Principal at McKissick Elementary School said, “I’ve hadconversations with several parents that said their children have shownmore confidence since beginning the lessons… I’d like to believe thatby building the students’ confidence in one area, swimming, that theirconfidence in other areas will grow.”

Because of you, youth achieve theirpotential and discover their strengths.

Superintendent Dr. Danny Merck states, "Many of our studentsare identified as at-risk and would benefit from a positive one-on-one relationship with an adult."
