WELCOME Join the Y for fun, sun and cause

We’re looking forward to one of the best summers ever at the YMCA of South Florida. Summer is a time filled with lots of fun! Kids will enjoy new adventures in summer camp, learn to swim and make new friends. Families will connect and spend time together at the pool and with family-oriented activities, and friends will become healthier together in the Y’s group exercise classes and wellness programs. Summer is also the time when our community need is the greatest – from providing financial assistance to one out of every four summer camp kids, to leading the effort to provide swim lessons to make sure all kids are safe in and around the water; meeting the needs of our community is our cause. Thanks to our donors, community partners and members like you, the Y has the tools and resources the entire family needs to have a healthy, happy and safe summer. We invite you to join us for some fun, some sun, and a bit of cause.

TEACHING ALL CHILDREN TO BE SAFE IN AND AROUND WATERAccidental drowning is the leading cause of death among infants and small children in Florida, and Broward and Miami-Dade counties lead the state, but the reality is accidental drowning is preventable. That’s why the YMCA of South Florida offers water safety and swim lessons for children of all skill levels and different capabilities.

SWIM FOR JENNY WEEK: Our annual Drowning Prevention Program where participants receive a free week

of swim lessons, learn basic swimming skills and practice safety habits while in and around the water. Last year the YMCA of South

Florida impacted over 1,500 children and adults across Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

MOBILE AQUATICS TEAM: During the summer, our team of Aquatics Professionals provide swim lessons to community, apartment, and multi-unit pools. Free to eligible locations. If your apartment complex or community is interested in participating in this lifesaving program please contact:

Jackie Morgan at 954-334-9622 or [email protected].

3 Layers of Drowning Prevention Drowning is the number ONE killer of children ages 4 and under. These three layers of prevention can help make a child safer in, on and around the water.

DROWNING PREVENTION JOIN US IN SAVING LIVES. HELP US TEACH A CHILD TO SWIM.

The YMCA of South Florida has adopted Swim for Jenny as our signature drowning prevention program. Who is Jenny? Jenny was a one-of-a-kind 12-year-old child. She was smart, energetic, beautiful and blessed with a loving family. Unfortunately, Jenny did not know how to swim. She lost her life when she drowned at a friend’s birthday party. A group of amazing volunteers created Swim for Jenny as a reminder of the importance of learning to swim.

Together we can prevent drownings by providing swim scholarships, water safety awareness and education to the South Florida community.

INCLUSION PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN, TEENS AND ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Learning to read, tying your shoe, going on your first field trip or simply making a new friend are experiences that create lasting memories for every child. For children who have special needs, reaching these milestones comes with unique challenges. The goal of inclusion is to increase each child’s ability to take part in activities with their peers and to create a mutual sense of belonging.

The Y currently offers inclusion at elementary and middle schools. The program is designed for children, teens and adults ages 3 to 22 with a wide range of special needs, including physical, developmental, sensory and learning disabilities. The service structure and program schedule closely mirror that of a typical Y afterschool program with increased support such as:

• Shorter sessions • Lower staff-to-participant ratios• Adaptive materials and supplies

Y Sports Buddies Y Sports Buddies is an exciting, inclusive

sports program for children of all ability levels that teach social skills, increasing self-confidence, skill development and promoting physical activity. They are paired with a volunteer (buddy) that helps engage them in the activity during each session.

Volunteers and players alike enjoy interacting with each other while they experience the benefits of such sports as soccer, swimming and basketball. Sessions are facilitated by YMCA staff that can help participants and deal with any challenges that may come up during the sessions.

*Inclusion Programs currently available in Broward County only

Keep Your Kids Active This Summer It’s summer time. Kids are more likely to gain weight due to inactivity. Follow these tips to help your kids and family stay active and healthy this summer:

EAT HEALTHY Make water the drink of choice (supplemented by

age-appropriate portions of 100 percent fruit juices and low-fat milk) and make it easy for everyone to fill half their plates with fruits and vegetables by offering two or three colorful options. Feel free to mix and match

fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables to provide variety.

PLAY EVERY DAY/ GO OUTSIDE Kids should have at least an hour a day of

unstructured play outside (when possible) and break a sweat at least three times a week by getting 20 minutes or more of

vigorous physical activity.

GET TOGETHER Eat as a family as frequently as possible with kids involved in meal preparation and clean up. In addition, adults should take a break from electronics and spend one-on-one time each day

with their kids, enjoying one another’s company.

REDUCE SCREEN TIME

Time spent in front of a television, computer, tablet, cell phone or video games should be limited to two hours per day.

SLEEP WELL

Kids and adults need to keep a regular sleep schedule—10-12 hours per night for kids and seven to eight hours for adults.

SUMMER TIPSBUDGET-FRIENDLY IDEAS FOR SUMMER FAMILY FUNGreat family memories and fun, physical activity doesn’t have to break the bank. Try these creative, cost-saving alternatives for enjoying summer vacation that build family connections.

TAKE A HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE TOUR – If exploring the grand architecture and buildings of Europe isn’t in the budget this year, families can plan interesting adventures right in their own communities. Map out a route to bike or walk

and explore different places of worship. Contact the local historical society for information on significant homes and buildings. Firehouses and other public places often welcome visits.

BRING THE BEACH TO THE BACKYARD – Don’t live near sand or sea? Bring a taste of the tropics to your neighborhood with a backyard beach party for friends and family. Play games with inflatable beach balls; turn

on the sprinkler for a cool splash. Turn up the beach tunes and dance. Serve up tropical fruit kabobs and grill a healthy, island-inspired lunch of fish and veggies.

TAKE STOCK OF THE MARKET – Spend a morning exploring a farmer’s market and stock up on fresh, ripe locally grown produce. Talk to vendors about seasonal favorites and get the kids engaged in

picking favorites and new foods to try. Pick up a plant or two and experience the fun of pride of growing fresh tomatoes or strawberries at home.

FIND A VOLUNTEER “VACATION” – Try something new while helping others or the environment. Find a volunteer project for the whole family – planting flowers in public areas, picking up litter in the park,

or taking shelter dogs for a walk. Local Ys can help find a volunteer opportunity that matches family interests.

PLAY AROUND TOWN – Challenge the family to play on a different playground every week. Identify playgrounds at a variety of parks; expand definitions of playgrounds to include nature trails, a nearby stream, and a bike

path. Keep a diary of favorite places and activities.

VolunteerGive of your time to help cultivate a community in which we all help one another. There are various types of volunteer opportunities:

• Youth Sports Coach• Community Garden• Special Events & Projects• Mentoring• Annual Campaign• Advisory Boards• Committees

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYGIVING BACK AND PROVIDING SUPPORT TO OUR NEIGHBORS

GiveThe Annual Campaign allows the Y to provide financial assistance to kids, families, seniors and adults in need so they can experience our programs and services. Juan may need to learn to swim and can’t afford it. Or the Johnsons may need a place to keep their family active. Y financial assistance lets them do that.

Visit ymcasouthflorida.orgor stop by your local YMCA to find out more.

Stop by the Member Services Desk at your local Y to find out how you can make a difference in your community.

STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITY AS YOU STRENGTHEN YOURSELFThe YMCA of South Florida is making a huge difference in our communities. Throughout the community, people know the Y. What they don’t know is that the Y not only strengthens our bodies, it strengthens our community. As our community faces new challenges each day, there is a greater need for us to continue the work we do every day, and make a difference.

We plan to touch many more lives in more meaningful ways than ever before. We invite you to be a part of it. There are two ways you can – Give and Volunteer.
