The Santa Themed 5K run was held to benefit the Y’s Campaign for Kids. Over 500 runners braved the cold morning temperatures to support the event. Runners were encouraged to dress in festive attire as prizes were awarded to best dressed and best decorated stroller. Runners dressed in everything from full Santa suits, to red bath robes and elf costumes. Mile markers were designated by decorated Christmas trees and festive holiday music. While many family members and friends joined us to support the event, a special thanks goes out to the Y Tidal Force swim team who entered the race with well over fifty runners to support the cause. While the theme of the event was mostly fun and festive, awards were still offered to overall winners. In the men’s division, 1st overall was Aaron Anderson, 2nd overall was Eamon Connelly and 3rd place overall was Kyle Grimm. In the women’s division, 1st overall was Andrea Stone, 2nd overall was Jackie Marchese and 3rd overall was Jennifer Simmons. Y NEWS • WINTER 2013

Please join us in congratulating our swim team on a great winter season! The first weekend in December was filled with great success! Our swimmers had options to swim in two different meets, and those that participated did outstanding! We had a combined 161 best times and 80 new CAP goals achieved. Not to mention 6 new team records. In addition, our swimmers used their great character to learn lessons and set examples. Way to represent the Frederick YMCA!

In November, the FCY swim team traveled to Easton MD for the Opening Gun Competition. We are pleased to announce out top point achievers 1st – 5th in their age groups: Yael Garcia achieved the 8 and under girls 1st place top points award; Kathryn Pressly achieved the 9-10 girls 4th place top points award; Noah Althoff achieved the 9-10 boys 3rd place top points award; Yashua Garcia achieved the 11-12 boys 1st place top points award; James Smith achieved the 11-12 boys 2nd place top points award.

We are so proud of our swimmers and the great job they have done so far this season! Stay tuned for more news as our swim team will be attending the biggest youth YMCA competition in the country and swim against possible future Olympic caliber swimmers! If you see anyone on the swim team, be sure to wish them luck!!!

EAT HEALTHY DINING OUTIf you’re looking to shed some weight in 2013, it’s important to keep your guard up when dining out. Here are three tips that will help you cut out some of the most glaring diet offenders at your next restaurant outing.

1. Keep it simple - Usually, the simpler your order is, the less likely it is to harbor hidden fats and calories. A “plain jane” order of grilled or broiled protein (fish, seafood, skinless poultry, or lean meat) with a side salad or steamed veggies and a plain baked potato is the way to go if you’re aiming to keep your calories in check, especially if you eat out several times a week.

2. Make special requests - Restaurants are notorious for buttering bread when preparing sandwiches. You can save yourself 100 calories or more by asking your server to make sure your bread is served dry, without added butter or oil.

3. Eliminate the extras like the bread basket - it’s a pre-meal calorie trap! Also, choose a low-calorie beverage such as water, black coffee or unsweetened tea. Those extra calories can really add up!

37TH ANNUAL FREDERICK COUNTY YMCA ALVIN G. QUINN SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Alvin G. Quinn, outstanding athlete and former director of the YMCA of Frederick County, was widely admired for his sportsmanship, character, and high standard of ethics. Accordingly, when the Sports Hall of Fame was formed in 1977, the creators voted to name it after Alvin G. Quinn, and named him as one of the original inductees. To this day, the Hall of Fame committee continues to accept

nominations from the public for potential inductees into the Hall of Fame at its annual banquet each February. Inductees are chosen not just based on their athletic achievements, but also on their character.

This year, the Frederick County YMCA Alvin G. Quinn Sports Hall of Fame has selected six new inductees to enter the Hall of Fame; Bill Foreman, Don Frost, Mark Miller, Paul Nolan, Peggy Trimmer and Fred Young were selected after many weeks of review. The Induction Banquet will be held at 79 West Frederick Street in Walkersville at 6 pm on Saturday, February 2nd. Tickets are $30 per person. Tables can be reserved with a $300 payment.

Applications can be submitted year round at the YMCA of Frederick County in downtown Frederick. Please put applications to the attention of Kim Hart, who will deliver the applications to the Hall of Fame Committee for review. Award selection begins in September each year. Applications can be downloaded from the YMCA website. Contact Kim Hart at 301-663-5131, ext. 1222 for more information.

As summer fast approaches, the YMCA of Frederick County reminds parents that camping is a unique and invaluable experience. Summer is a critical out-of-school time when children and teens can benefit from enriched learning, new experiences and making new friendships and memories that can last a lifetime. “The YMCA of Frederick County provides a variety of opportunities to help ensure that youth are learning and being physically active in the summer, a time of exploration,” says Billy Coppit, Director of Youth Programs. “Campers also learn how to be responsible and resourceful, work in groups, solve problems and make decisions that will help them grow as individuals – all while having fun.”

A leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y works to help children and teens discover their full potential by providing opportunities to learn and grow. According to Y camping experts there are five reasons why kids should attend summer camp:

1. ADVENTURE: Summer camp is all about a wide variety of fun adventures and new experiences, and especially exploring the outdoors. YMCA camps have a new adventure for every child and teen. Visit www.frederickymca.org for details.

2. HEALTHY FUN: Day camps offer fun, stimulating activities that engage the body and mind, and also help children and teens learn the importance of nutrition to help improve their eating habits.

3. PERSONAL GROWTH: Summer camp provides youth with a chance to learn new skills, and develop confidence and independence by taking on new responsibilities and challenges.

4. NEW FRIENDSHIPS: Amidst the fun of camp games, songs, swimming, canoeing and talent shows, campers will meet new friends.

5. MEMORIES: Summer camp is an unforgettable experience that will give each camper memories that will last a lifetime. Youth return to school with plenty of camp stories to share!

The YMCA of Frederick County provides exciting and educational camp programming for children and teens, and their parents. For more information on our summer camp programs, please contact Billy Coppit at 301-662-5131, ext. 1274 or email [email protected].

YMCA PRESENTS 4TH ANNUAL COMEDY & MAGIC SPECTACULAR The YMCA of Frederick County is excited to present the 2013 Comedy & Magic Spectacular on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Weinberg Center. Building on the foundation previously established by the Frederick Alliance for Youth, this year’s show will benefit the youth and families in the Hillcrest and Waverly neighbors along Frederick’s Golden Mile.

This year’s show will offer excitement, fun, variety, clean comedy, magic, joy, juggling, animals, music, wonder and a chance to be with your family and forget about everything but fun and laughter for 2½ hours. As one of the past attendees once said, “THIS is what families should be doing!” The line up of talent is new this year, and each act is sure to be exciting and fun. Each of the four acts on the 2013 line up could actually present a full evening shows by themselves. Instead, they have come together to provide Frederick with a show to remember.

The 2013 Comedy & Magic Spectacular lineup includes:

ICE McDonald - ICE, “Illusions, Captivation, Enchantment” McDonald is a master magician, mentor, lecturer, corporate speaker, show producer and more. His powerful physical presence onstage belies the fact that he is the ultimate gentleman and gentle man.

Eric Buss - Eric Buss, the Comedy Imaginator, is based in Los Angeles but is constantly traveling the globe with his own brand of funny. Not just an award winning magician, Eric presents a fast paced act with strong comedy, great music, unique props, crazy inventions and hilarious audience participation.

Nathan Kepner & Crescent Circus - Referencing the bygone era of zoot suits and juke boxes, Nathan Kepner created and act that took the magic world by storm. Before the age of 20, this act won six prestigious, first-place awards as judged by his peers at magic conventions nationwide. Nathan Kepner, combined with the talented MorganTsu-Raun form the Crescent Circus, excite audiences and inspire applause with hula hoops, the art of quick change, acrobatics and juggling.

Michael Grasso- Only one magic act has survived to the prestigious finals round of “America’s Got Talent,” and that is Michael Grasso. After “wowing” the judges (Howie, Sharon and Piers) on “America’s Got Talent” and being watched by millions on the popular NBC series, his career rocketed toward true stardom. Based in Cape May, New Jersey, he is constantly touring Asia, Europe and the USA. Grasso Magic is a most sought after performer. Now see live what others have only seen on TV, the incredible magic of Michael Grasso.

Hurry, tickets will sell fast so don’t wait! Tickets are on sale now at the Weinberg Center box office or can be purchased online at www.weinbergcenter.org.

Interested in being a sponsor or advertising in the show program? For more information, please call Kim Hart at the YMCA of Frederick County at 301-663-5131, ext. 1222 or email [email protected].

After 25 years of dedicated service at the Y, Abdollah “Abdul” Rassouli has decided to retire. Abdul spent time in many departments during his time at the Y but he is best known as a senior fit floor specialist and personal trainer in the Health and Wellness area. Abdul was very engaging and helpful to members which was evident at his well attended retirement reception on January 17th. Well wishers stopped by to let him know how much they appreciated him and how they looked forward to seeing him whenever they came in to work out. Many commented on the monthly rowing challenge he started years ago. One member said “Abdul taught me how to row, I’m going to miss his challenges.” We will all miss Abdul and look forward to seeing him at the Y as he enjoys his lifetime membership with us.

SENIOR FIT FLOOR SPECIALIST RETIRES AFTER 25 YEARS

Members Tim Morgan and Bob Harris pose with Chris Colville and Abdul Rassouli at his retirement reception on January 17th.

The Y was able this Thanksgiving season to help provide families in the community with a Thanksgiving Dinner and other food items. The School Age Child Care Department coordinated this project again this year. We were able to provide six families with complete Thanksgiving dinners and also supported the local food bank with our annual canned food drive.

Many families in the area struggle each year to be able to provide Christmas gifts for their children. The School Age Child Care Department along with several other departments helped the Salvation Army fill Christmas stockings. As in years past, we were able to fill over 50 stockings to assist the Salvation Army. This Christmas season 1,619 children in the Frederick Community were given a stocking. The Y also participated with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots as a drop off site for new toys. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the season brighter for the children in our community.

KIDS CLUB HELPSLOCAL FAMILIES IN NEED

FAMILIES AT PLAYFOR AN HOUR A DAY

You don’t have to be an athlete or in love with exercise equipment to practice healthy living. In fact, when your family makes play a priority, you’ll probably find yourself having so much fun that you won’t even notice how active you are. Adding short periods of playful activity to your day helps provide you with the energy that you need to live a full and balanced life. It is also one of the keys to avoiding a variety of chronic conditions down the road, and what better way to spend time with your kids now?

Playful movement is one of the keys to a healthy family home. It doesn’t matter what you choose to do. As long as your arms and legs are moving, it’s good for you. To get 60 minutes of activity throughout your day just add ten minutes here and fifteen minutes there. It adds up and it all counts, so get playing!

Several times each week, spend a little more energy while moving. Try to engage in vigorous activities at least three times each week for 20 consecutive minutes. Don’t worry if five or ten minutes leaves you feeling wiped out at first. Small steps will get you there, so don’t overdo it. When the play stops feeling good, take a break.

Parents and caregivers play an important role in the lives of children. They can set an example by creating healthy environments. Simple things really can help make a difference and build healthy habits for life.

COMPETITIVEGYMNASTICS

Our FCY Gymnastics Team, which competes in the Mason Dixon Gymnastics League, just competed in their second meet of the 2013 season. Thirteen of our fourteen competitive team members participated in this meet where they were very excited to bring home twenty medals, ten of which were gold. They were also delighted to see every teammate place in at least one category. All of the coaching staff were unbelievably proud of the progress made between meet 1 and 2. The girls went from receiving eleven event scores of 9.0 or higher out of 10.0 and earning a team all-around average of 28.20 out of 40.0 to receiving sixteen event scores of 9.0 or higher and earning a team all-around average of 33.80. These girls continuously work hard to not only excel in their sport but to do it with strong character. We are proud to be the Frederick Y Gymnastics Team!

YMCA WELCOMES NEW MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORThe YMCA of Frederick County is pleased to welcome Justin Gaston as our new membership director. Justin has an extensive background in customer service in non-profit organizations. He has served in a leadership role at the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region in Colorado Springs, Colorado as their membership director. There he also coordinated military outreach programs and oversaw the child watch area. More recently, Justin worked at the YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association) in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Justin currently resides in Gettysburg with his wife, Colleen.

Justin is excited to be a part of the YMCA of Frederick County and is available to assist you with your membership needs. He can be reached at 301-663-5131, ext. 1243 or email [email protected].

WE ARE NOT A HEALTH CLUBSubmitted by Justin Gaston, YMCA of Frederick County Membership Director

On almost a weekly basis, I field calls here at the Y that are from prospective new members. One of the first exchanges I have with a prospective member is almost always in the form of questions about how we compare to area health clubs. The caller on the phone line is usually pretty surprised when my response is “We are Not a Health Club.”

This statement sounds a bit odd, but it lies at the core of who the Y is and what makes us different, and why we are so important to the community. It’s true that we have a fitness center with treadmills, elliptical machines and weight equipment. We also have fitness classes ranging from Yoga to Kettlebells. We offer water fitness and even personal training. But for the YMCA, these are just a means to helping our members and the community lead a healthier life in spirit, mind, and body. It’s one of the tools that we use in a uniquely “Y” way to make our mission become reality.

There’s so much more going on here that you won’t see at a health club. Every day, dozens of children are learning to swim. Each week, kids are getting after school care. Seniors are taking part in programs specifically designed to meet their needs. But even more importantly than that, every day, we’re developing relationships with our members.

Let me stop here and say that differentiating ourselves from a health club doesn’t mean that we don’t like or are “against” health clubs. There are some great health clubs out there and they offer great programs and services for their members. We applaud the work that health clubs do to improve the physical fitness of their members.

I once heard the Y described as a movement. I really like that description in that we don’t measure our successes in analytical terms. For us it’s not about pounds lost or games won or how fast the next lap is swum. For us, we measure our success by the impact we have in people’s lives: A single parent is able to keep his or her job because of our after school care program. A child makes new friends because he’s on a soccer team. A senior discovers a new hobby through a relationship developed in a class for active older adults. These things are what make all the work we do worthwhile.

So if you’re a Y member and someone asks you what gym you go to, be sure to tell them that you don’t belong to a gym, but you are a part of the Y. Tell them about the great stuff that’s going on here. And if you want to find out more about what we do, contact us. We’d love to share.

Y HAPPENINGS...

Our North Frederick Elementary Kids Club had an “American Idol” style dance contest complete with scorecards and judges’ commentary. The “Beat Bosses” took 1st place with moves that would put Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake to shame! Every group did a great job and will have a another chance at the next dance off in February. Keep your eye on our facebook page for pictures and video to follow!

The Y held its annual Philanthropy dinner on January 17 to thank our 2012 donors. Tom Lynch accepted the Philanthropy Award from CEO, Chris Colville, and Board Chair, Chris Smariga on behalf of George & Bettie Delaplaine.

With a happy New Year comes happy news at the Green Valley YMCA! We have officially entered the renovation stage on a new space at the Green Valley Shopping Center on Fingerboard Road in Monrovia. Our new space will include a cardio room, free weight lifting area and space for all of our Cybex training equipment. Everything we currently have will be traveling with us to our new space as well as some new pieces such as a squat rack and a brand new multi-functional trainer.

Our new health and wellness center will have direct access to our fitness studio and babysitting area. No more traveling up and down the shopping center sidewalk to get from one area to another! Expanding the babysitting area and renovating the fitness studio space are also a part of the renovation. Operations will continue as they do currently. We hope to be in our new space in March.

If you don’t already utilize our facility as a member of the YMCA of Frederick County Association, please consider making the trip to check us out! We are less than 10 minutes from Urbana and Ijamsville and about 15 minutes from Mt. Airy. We offer a number of classes and have much of the same equipment you would find at the downtown branch as well as dedicated staff to welcome you and assist you in any way to make your visit productive and enjoyable. For more information or to arrange a tour, contact Christine Rachel at 301-607-6900.
