about our yfinanCial assistanCe/ sliding sCale and work tradeNo one is turned away from our Y due to an inability to pay. With funds raised through our annual Strong Kids Campaign, the “Kids to Camp” Golf Tournament and the United Way of Franklin County we are able to offer financial assistance to all qualified applicants. Sliding fees and/or work trade may be obtained by completing a Sliding Fee application. The amount of aid is determined by household size and income. Adults may receive from 10% to 70% in assistance for membership and programs. Children can receive up to 80% in aid. Adults (15+) must work trade any portion of a membership or program fee for which they are unable to pay.

If you believe you are in need, please contact our Welcome Center for more information.

sPeCial needs PoliCyEvery person, regardless of special need, is welcome to register for Y programs. At the time of registration, if a child’s particular needs appear not to be met by our standard program, a meeting will take place between the parents/guardian and the supervising Program Director. At that meeting the child’s needs must be detailed and a written plan generated indicating what changes in program, routine or setting would accommodate those needs. The plan will be reviewed by the Executive Director to determine if it would pose a hardship. Whenever possible, adaptations will be made, but if an undue hardship would be imposed to accommodate the special needs, the parents will be informed in writing within one week of the initial meeting. In such a case the parents/guardian may appeal the decision directly to the Massachusetts Office for Children for Licensed Programs, or the A.D.A. for other programs. Adults with special needs may bring care providers to attend to them in classes or exercise areas. Every attempt will be made to help everyone fit in. In situations where behavior disrupts the general atmosphere, a Program Director will speak with the care provider about behavior modifications or another choice of programming.

Parking PoliCyPlease only park in the Y’s lots while you are using the YMCA (not when you are shopping, using the library or court house etc.). You must have a current Y-Parking Pass hanging from your rear view mirror to use these lots. To ensure enough parking spaces please abide by our 2 hour time limit. After 5 pm, Mon.-Fri. parking in the court house lot is acceptable.

Our Main Street upper lot has 11 parking spaces, four require a state handicapped permit; seven require a Y handicapped permit. Restrictions apply to accommodate our many participants with physical limitations who cannot attend classes if they cannot park in the upper lot or close to the rear entrance. People who are more mobile should park farther away from the rear entrance, in the upper rear

lot, or in the Armory parking lot. We appreciate your caring consideration for others.

insuranCe stateMentOur Y does not provide accident insurance for injuries sustained during Y activities. Members and Program Associates participate in programs and use the facility at their own risk, and are encouraged to have personal medical insurance coverage.

MeMber feedbaCk PoliCyWe strive to provide quality programs, up-to-date equipment, a clean, well-maintained facility and, of course, excellent member service in a friendly, caring and respectful environment. We welcome and encourage constructive feedback; all concerns and ideas are reviewed and problems addressed whenever possible. The following communication options are available to all Y members and program participants: 1) Leave a note in our Suggestion Box outside the Nautilus Center or send us an e-mail to [email protected].

2) Leave a written message at the Welcome Center or call a staff member. (see pg. 1 for contact information)

3) Contact the Executive Director if you are unhappy with the staff response.

4) Write a letter to our Membership Committee if you are unhappy with the response from the Executive Director.

Please follow these procedures and your concerns and suggestions will be carefully evaluated. We will implement change where space, finances, schedule and Y policy allow. If you wish to have a personal response, please include your name and contact information.

Our Y improves the lives of thousands of Franklin County kids, adults and seniors every year. We are grateful to our dedicated members who serve as Ambassadors and/or Volunteers who help us fulfill our mission.

volunteers: Help our Y offer new programs or help with existing programs, tasks and special events. If you can serve in similar ways, we always need help with youth sports, bulk mailings, mentoring, special events, our Strong Kids Campaign, and classes. We’d also love to know if you have an idea, hobby or interest where you could share your talents.

If you’re interested in adding this new dimension to your life, please contact Mariellen Hayre, Volunteer

Coordinator, at 773-3646, ext. 415. y aMbassadors:Provide their time and talent to assist others in feeling welcome at our facility and among our Y family. We have groomed these dedicated members to serve as representatives modeling the lifestyle we promote and reinforcing support for new members while they’re becoming familiar with our facilities and programs. An Ambassador can also simply be a companion to learn from and befriend.

Members interested in becoming a YMCA Ambassador can contact Jayne Trosin at 773-3646, ext. 448.

strong kids & faMilies CaMPaignEach year our primary fund raiser is the Strong Kids & Families Campaign, which raises funds to subsidize youth and family programs and provide financial assistance so all families may participate in Y programs. Our goal is to turn no one away from joining our Y. Take part in this incredible team effort by donating or volunteering time in the spring in our Phone-a-Thon or calling potential donors. We want to continue to assist children and families who otherwise cannot participate in our programs.

If you’d like to help, call Tina Newton at 773-3646 Ext. 411.

CoMMunity-wide serviCe aCtivitiesOur Y, our members and staff actively serve Franklin County in ways that improve, strengthen and better the lives of those in need. We have a Food Drop Program at our facility and we help host “Community Meals” that help feed hundreds of Franklin County families. Our members and staff participate in the annual Relay for Life, sponsor and work in partnership with other community entities to help kids go to camp and receive needed school supplies, and we also participate in other programs with the United Way of Franklin County, Baystate/Franklin Medical Center, local schools and other organizations. Ask at the Welcome Center how you can participate and make a difference.

“kids to CaMP” golf tournaMentJuly 16 2012. In the last nine years, our annual “Kids to Camp” Golf Tournament has raised over $100,000 specifically to provide kids of low and middle-income families with the opportunity to attend the Y’s summer day camps. You can get involved independently, as a volunteer, or with your business by sponsoring, playing, or attending the auction. This event is just one more way the Y is working to help all kids receive the benefits of Y camps.

tHe Heritage Club: leave a legaCyThe Heritage Club is a special group of individuals who believe in the Y and want to ensure that its valuable character-building programs/services continue through new generations. Club members have included the Y in their estate plans by will, insurance or by giving a gift outright. A unique aspect of Heritage Club membership is that your gift can be deferred. Listing the YMCA in Greenfield as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy qualifies you as a member. Each fall the Club meets for a social/dinner and informational session to recognize members. As more people join this fellowship, the Y builds long-term financial stability that enables us to meet our mission.

For information on the Club or deferred giving, contact Bob Sunderland.

Meet our staffnancee Bershof - Board president As I look ahead to the coming year, the second year of my board president term, I feel both honored and challenged by this leadership role.

The nation, our state and indeed our county are in an unprecedented economic downturn. For our Y this has meant belt-tightening - controlling costs and reducing expenses while

continuing to offer our members the highest quality programs possible, and provide an ever-increasing number of members with financial aid. I am enormously proud of our staff, our board or directors and trustees, and our executive director for making this happen. But we cannot sustain this without a good solid income - from membership dues and our important annual fundraising: the Strong Kids and Families Campaign and the Kids To Camp Golf Tournament.

With this in mind I’ve set some personal goals in conjunction with our Y strategic planning:

• Support and nourish our staff who are by far our greatest asset.• Strengthen the Y during these challenging economic times through strong financial

management, brisk fund-raising and attraction of new members.• Bring to full fruition the programs we’ve initiated the past two years such as Exercise is

Medicine, Walk Franklin County, Community Meals, Greenfield Public School swim program and many others.

• Improve our marketing efforts via greater use of GCTV, available media, vital online presence.• Continue to build a comprehensive volunteer program that attracts many more of our

members to join us to help with some of Franklin County’s social needs.• Continue to improve our annual Strong Kids & Families Campaign so we have the financial

aid and funds to serve people of all economic levels.

We need your help to keep the Y strong and viable—you, our members and program participants, are 6000 strong and with just some of your extra effort we can do everything on my list and so much more! Please join if you’re not yet a member; take a new program and share the excitement with your friends; ask a buddy to join the Y; join one of the many volunteer opportunities; participate with your time and a donation in the annual campaign.

But the most important thing you can do is to keep you and your family fit in mind, body and spirit by actively participating in Y programs. This guide will help you find just what you need to make that happen! If you have questions call the Welcome Center at 773-3646.

Bob Sunderland executive director

Our goal at the YMCA is to provide you with safe, quality programs in a clean, comfortable facility filled with

like-minded members. If you have a concern or question about a program you or your children are participating in, please contact the staff members responsible for that activity. We will do our best to meet your needs. See page 1 for contact info.

Can you HelP Make tHis new Pool a reality?Franklin County needs a two pool Aquatic Center. In the fall of 2008 we started raising funds for a modern two pool Aquatic Center. Then the first recession hit and the economy has been very slowly trying to recover. We used the over $400,000 raised to renovate the existing pool and build the new 10 person jacuzzi in the fall of 2010. The economy may not be healthy enough for many years to do a normal capital campaign, but if you can help make this 50 year, $4,000,000 dream a reality. Please consider putting the Y in your estate plans for a deferred gift for “Aquatic Program Support” or are you one of those “Angels” we read about who step forward and make a community changing gift to get a project built. Please contact Bob Sunderland for more information.
