Step forward to “Creative minority”

“Creative Minority”, which is a key ideal of education from my undergraduate university, Korea National University of Arts. Under this motto and throughout the whole undergraduate course and extra activities in various field, I found myself that has talents and interests in communicating with people and creating valuable and sustainable design output. I have challenged to achieve my goal which is being an outstanding person in design field, espe-cially in solving problems for the upcoming complex future. Also, I have a strong passion for realizing the belief ‘my design is for helping clear communication and making human life better.’

Currently, I am in master’s course in Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. I am involved in design media laboratory and have conducted several projects related to interaction design and user experience. With basis on graphic and communication design from undergraduate, now I became a researcher of interaction design and human computer interaction. This changes my view point toward multilateral thinking in the interpretation of people’s needs and fast changing society. With these backgrounds, I am challenging another great opportunity which may positively effect to my whole design life. I would step forward to be a creative and competitive person if getting the favorite position in IDEO.

Belows are my key design directions that can be contributed to your company during internship.

1. contributing to media and communication design by aesthetic and pragmatic solutions 2. in- depth understanding various aspects of problem from business value to benefits for human 3. productive and creative performance to accomplish good teamwork as well as individuals. 4. expressing ideas in several ways; I am well in hand drawing, prototyping and also making digital output.

Thank you for your consideration. I hope to receive a positive response and get a chance to prove myself to be a “Creative Minority” in the design field.

Sincerely, Yeseul Kim

Neverthless, the screen interface -layout, structure, architecture- does not meet this rapid growth. The development of interface and web structure has not been in the same pace with the development of multimedia so much. Thus, as the beneficiary of plentiful media and being pursue to be a designer who deals with media, I felt new communition environment which reflects this changes should be suggested and I started to design this project to improve an experience about web media in that sense.

Web environment is fast changing since it developed and became a huge media itself. More people have participated in the network without any borders and lots of press media turned to mutual interactive service. Es-pecially, the way of broadcasting and press have dramastically innovated with explosion of social media which provide immediate news and feed.

The Nederlandse Spoorwegen logo is the corpo-rate logo of NS. The logo was designed in 1968 by Gert Dumbar and Gert-Jan Leuvelink for graphic design company Tel Design. It was introduced in the same year. The logo usually appears in blue (Pantone 288) on a dark yellow (Pantone 123) background. Since the introduction of the current corporate logo all NS trains have the same dis-tinct dark yellow colour.

The logo, which replaced a design which had been used since 1946, can be found in a great number of places on trains and railway stations in the Netherlands. The two arrows in the logo represent the directions of the movement made by the train, the two lines in the middle represent the track. The logo always plays a significant part in the NS’ signing, promotions, advertising and graphical design

Letterrijk Book is a story about the birth and why of creation the typeface Rijksoverheid written by Mathieu Lommen, published by De Buitenkant Publishers. The booklet covers everything from the start of the project and the combination with project 1 Logo, a story about how the typography started working together, with many drawn ex-amples of early stages of letter design.

It also covers the complete glyphs of the type-face variations, with over 700 glyphs each this typeface is multi-language proof. With the design of the typeface several key factors of demands where given to Peter Verheul and Studio Dumbar.

The typeface should be easy to read, should not be too wide in order to reduce printing costs, it could be used for all forms of visual communica-tion of the Dutch Government and every depart-ment will use it therefore it will reduce the costs of different typeface licenses. The typeface will function as a bridge between society and govern-ment, a typeface that everybody will feel comfort-able with.

Studio Dumbar gave the Dutch Presidency of the European Union in 2004 a clear and strong visual identity, contributing to the clarity and appeal of European politics and the Dutch role in the European political arena. The logo is compact, modern and strong and contains all relevant el-ements: the letter combination ‘EU’, the slightly hidden initials ‘NL’, the year 2004, the red white and blue of the Dutch flag, including the EU-blue and the Dutch orange. The number 2004 com-pletes the square form of the logo. This addition however, can be left out, creating a large number of alternative applications. Reactions to the logo from inside and outside the Netherlands were very positive.

From the beginning of 2008 Peter Verheul was asked by studio Dumbar to take his typeface Versa and transform the typeface usable for a larger audience. He changed the look and feel of the Serif version of Versa Serif and created a complete new set of letters for the Sans version.

The fonts are named Rijksoverheid Sans and Rijksoverheid Serif. The name of the typeface is recognizable as “government” and will be used in every way of visual communication. The Ri-jksoverheid Sans will be used mainly for head-ings of text and in signage or wayfinding systems.

The Rijksoverheid Serif is used as bread letter for reading text. In just under nine months Peter Ver-heul managed to finalize the fonts and released them in four different variations, from Regular, Italic to Bold

As part of the new brand identity of the Dutch government Peter Verheul designed a custom typeface for all forms of visual communications. This is the result of a new way the Dutch govern-ment wants to position themselves into society.

Currently there are over 200 departments and ministries which all have different logos and uses different typefaces as their brand identity. In a pitch held by the Dutch government studio Dumbar won this competition and introduced a new logo and 1 brand identity: 1 Logo.

Gert Dumbar established Studio Dumbar in 1977 Right from the start, the Studio stood for top-notch design, employing the talents of individu-als designers to create powerful design solutions.

Studio Dumbar’s design approach is truly without borders. That shows in our hiring policy. Although clearly rooted in the Netherlands, we have on average, 5 different nationalities working in our staff of 30.

The Dutch government brand identity was not concise or consistent, with over 200 departments and ministries costs were rising of each depart-ment havigd their own logo, typeface, print ma-terials, signage and everything that involves the visual communication of that department.

There was not a direct link to society and confu-sion about the identity the government wants to presents themselves.

Project 1 Logo was born to bring back all brand identity of the Dutch government and give one signal to society about what the government stands for. In a pitch several design studios participated in order to create 1 Logo, 1 brand, 1 identity, 1 way of communicating between society and government, coming all together as 1 gov-ernment. From 2009 until 2011 every department should use the new logo and typeface in all forms of visual communication, a huge operation which involves many parties.

I believe there will be a brand guideline from stu-dio Dumbar to lead everything into the correct, concise and consistent use of the brand identity.

Initiated and completed in 2004. Visual Identity for the Dutch Presidency of the European Union 2004. Including logo, stationery, 2D and 3D ap-plications, interaction design.

Moreover, Stu-dio Dumbar came up with the idea of integrating subscription forms into traditional items such as letterheads and business cards, giving them a double function as campaign items.

The visual identity developed for the Dutch po-lice force merges the spirit of two previously autonomous police organizations – namely, the state and municipal corps – and the interest of the public, embodying all three in a single word-image, or trademark.

The flame symbol can be seen as a beacon, or protective flame. This is combined with a law book-like form. The resulting graphic element has proven capable of standing on its own; it is immediately recognized as representing the Dutch police. Studio Dumbar’s design for the Dutch police force is a radical departure from the 8-point Bathstar universally associated with police forces. However, the graphic symbol com-bined with the word ‘politie’ succeeds in creating a universal – and uncommonly exclusive (read: copyright protected) – trademark.

Studio Dumbar designed the previous PTT Post style, followed by a seamless conversion to TPG Post. In 2006, it was the third time that we were asked to adapt the logo for the Dutch mail com-pany. How to translate a Dutch mentality and long standing design tradition to a new brand identity that is based on an existing style and can also operate worldwide? Studio Dumbar chose for a down-to-earth, phased transforma-tion that would fit the company culture. We looked for a style that would give the company their own, distinguishable face right from the start.

The illustrative way in which the logo and typog-raphy are used, combined with the contrasting colour palette of TNT, results in a distinguishable and bold style that represents both the Dutch heritage as well as looking forward to the global role of the new brand.

Project Concept

>SISOSound Interaction & Swing object

Have you heard the sound when children play at playground? There is sounds play equip-ment made of metal turns continuously, and the pleasant noise from children. Project SISO starts for making interaction between children and play equipment in the place which is surrounded by dynamic actions. Through SISO, we studied changing of the sound accord-ing to the motion when children ride the equipment. From that, we introduce the result which is increase pleasant acoustically among the motions children done at playground.

Page 22: Yeseul kim portfolio

It has two technology for connection the various motion when children romping around and music. First of all, Arduino device and triaxial acceleration sensor are used to change movement when children ride the equipment to electric signal. And the signal generated in this process be sent to computer through X-bee infrared transmission, and controlled the music by max & msp program. In this way, we realize the interaction changing of rhythm or pitch when music is playing according to the slope or acceleration of module included sensor.

Embodied Arduino & Triaxial acceleration

SISO Music play and Record Controller

We adjusted repeat constantly to harmonize the value of sensor made by play equipment with changing height of pitch. From that, pitch of music is changed in tuneful sound scope. Final interaction can divided into two types. On is that, select the music will be played or record voice directly. Another is that, as playing the mu-sic, pitch is changed when children ride the playing equipment which is equipped with SISO module. We apply to these two interactions in the mock up.

Implementation

Page 23: Yeseul kim portfolio

The play equipment was designed for demonstration to exhibit in indoor space instead of installing it at playground. The controller has function to record and control the music. Three buttons on left side can choose and play the music what children like. Push the red button on the right side records the voice a few seconds. Recorded voice plays repeatedly. The key interesting feature of SISO is that connection of pitch and motion and further to the re-cording voice is changed by the movement of equipment which they ride on.
