Reading

This lesson will be completed at 11.30 on Webex with your teacher. Warm Up: What is Reader’s Theatre? Let’s watch this video to find out what it’s all about! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gV6lm59IYY Activity: This week we will be working on Reader’s Theatre. This is where you will be given a script and you will have to practise reading your lines before orally presenting! It’s kind of like preparing you to be a famous actor/actress in Hollywood! Step 1: You will be split into breakout rooms and given a script. Step 2: You will all need to read the entire script so you have a good understanding of the story. Step 3: Allocate roles and choose who will read for each character. Step 4: Practise reading aloud. Step 5: Complete the Plot Diagram for your story. Step 6: Return the Main Session and prepare to perform your script to the class! Below is a copy of the Plot Diagram worksheet to complete for your story. Delve deeper into what each character is thinking, feeling and doing in your story.

Writing

Aussie Idols The podcast about amazing Aussies.

This week we will be producing our Aussie Idols podcast episodes. There are three parts to this process, and you have three lessons to complete them. This is an assessment piece for your reports, so don’t forget to submit your script to Google Classroom.

Revise & Edit Enhance Record

Take the draft of your script that you wrote last week and record yourself reading it out loud. Listen to it carefully. Give your script an honest score out of 5 for: ● An Opening that pulls you in ● Realistic dialogue ● Character’s voice (do you get a

feeling for who they are?) ● Significant achievements and

challenges ● Expression and energy Use ARMS and CUPS to bump all your scores up to 6 stars out of 5! When it is 100% perfect, submit your script on Google Classroom.

Think about all the podcast examples from Fierce Girls that we listened to last week. What features did they use to engage their audience and bring the subject’s stories to life?

● Sound effects ● Music ● Character voices ● Expression ● Anecdotes ● Intro/Outro/Credits

Use a pen/pencil/marker/highlighter to annotate your script. Mark in where you will include any features. Where might you need to leave a pause for a sound effect/music, or change your voice?

Lastly, when you think you are absolutely prepared, record your podcast. You can use one of the following apps/programs to record your podcast episode.

● Anchor ● Garage Band ● Voice memos ● iMovie

Anchor is recommended. It will give you the most professional outcome. If you want to use it, make sure you are set up nice and early in the week. Download the app using your school email. Post your completed episode on the Aussie Idols podcast padlet, then enjoy finding out about other amazing Aussies by listening to others. https://padlet.com/michaelmorell/exq2qd164khdzu1e

Maths

Because we had such a busy day Friday, a lot of us didn’t get a chance to complete our post tests on Location and Transformation. So now is your chance to catch up! Here is Friday’s lesson:

Goal Smasher Videos! To help you prepare for your Post-Test, the 5/6 teachers have made videos focusing on some of the topics we have covered in this unit. Choose the video that best suits the goal you have been working on. Watch the video and attempt the question at the end. Here are your options:

● Use location and directions ● Enlarging and reducing shapes ● Use Cartesian coordinates ● Use translations, reflections and rotational symmetries

When you feel ready, complete your Post-Test on Essential Assessment for Location and Transformation. Write a reflection on your results and submit these to Google Classroom. Some questions to get you thinking could be:

- Did you work hard on all your goals that were available? - Did you take your time to read every question? - Did you check your answers before submitting? - What were you really proud of? - How will you continue to enhance your learning now?

If you did your post test on Friday, complete your Division test, it could be a pre or a post depending on what you chose earlier in the year. It doesn’t matter which you do, it will just show us where you’re at now!

55 Geographical Terms You Must Know - Let's Talk Geography

on the Learning Videos Channel 18 minutes

The thing that connects all living things as we know it is where we live. Not the suburb or the country, but the Earth itself.

The Earth is an amazing thing. It has so many different parts that people have been exploring and working on for thousands of years and we are still learning more about it each year.

Today we want you to be a researcher and we want you to find out from the work that others have already done about our Earth.

Yep, we all know it’s sort of round, but what makes it up?

Below are some keywords that you need to research, illustrate and develop an understanding of.

The words are in no particular order but hopefully as you work through them you may be able to link and make connections between them.

Hand drawn illustrations are a great way to fuse the concepts into your mind. A mind map may also be a good tool.

KEYWORDS FOR SEARCHING.

Plate, seismic, tectonic, outer core volcano, earthquake, tsunami, crust, Inner core, mantle, upper mantle, continents, mountain ranges, river systems,

For the really brave ones amongst you, making a model and using labels may be a more enjoyable way of showing some of the meanings of the terms above. Maybe a video or slideshow but we’d really like to see your work, your fingerprint on the definitions and explanations.

Warm Up: Read the following piece of text and answer the comprehension questions in your Literacy book.

I go to bed. I close my eyes, but specters in my mind arise. I punch my pillow, toss and moan. Clearly, I am not alone. I crack an eyelid, scan the room – that’s when I see dark shadows loom. I rub my eyes so hard they burn. I crumple up my sheets and turn. I struggle, wrestle through the night, then, finally, at dawn’s first light: as sunbeams ’cross my window creep, I shudder twice and fall asleep.

Complete the following questions in your Literacy book:

1. Why can’t the person in the poem fall asleep? 2. What is a specter? How do you know? 3. How long does the person stay awake for? What clue can you find in the poem to help you?

Part 1: You will need to team up with some of your classmates online to complete today’s Readers’ Theatre. Attached to today’s Daily Post are 3 different scripts you can choose from. Step 1: Get together with your group online via WebEx or Google Meet (your Teacher can set this up for you!) Step 2: Choose the script you would like to read as a group. Step 3: Read the entire script so everyone has a good understanding of the story. Step 4: Assign roles so each person knows which character they are reading for. Step 5: Perform your Readers’ Theatre with each other! Today’s focus is on character voice and the way you express emotion through speaking. Activity: Character Profile! Complete a Character Profile based on the script you read today. If you were the Narrator in your group‘s Readers’ Theatre, then simply choose another character that featured in the script.

Warm Up: Read the following piece of text and answer the comprehension questions in your Literacy book.

To build a tower of blocks, you put one block on top of another until it creates a tall structure. With living things, there is a type of building block that does the same thing, creating the structure of who we are. This building block of all living things is called a cell. A cell that is cut in half will not survive. That makes a cell very special. It is considered the smallest part of an organism that can survive on its own, so it is the most basic unit of life. Trillions of cells join together to form a human being. But a single cell can also be alive. There are many very simple single-celled organisms, such as bacteria. They are the earliest and most primitive forms of life on earth. Cells are extremely tiny. Even if you have perfect eyesight, you cannot see one, except with a microscope. So what does a cell look like? Imagine a kind of sack holding a watery, jelly-like material. The sack is held together by a membrane, the outer lining of the cell. This membrane separates one cell from others and protects it from its outside environment. The membrane also allows some materials to enter and leave the cell.

Complete the following questions in your Literacy book:

1. What makes a cell so special? Use evidence from the text in your answer. 2. How did the author use imagery in their writing? 3. What kind of writing (genre) is this piece?

Part 1: Today’s task is to get together with some of your classmates online and read through the Laptop Mystery Script to track down the missing laptop! This script requires 8 readers (although if you have a smaller group, someone can double up and read for more than one character!). The script is attached to the Daily Post on Google Classroom. Assign roles and read the script as if you are performing it for an audience. Activity: The script booklet has a number of different activities for you to complete. Complete these activities in your Literacy book and tick them off this checklist as you go.

● 6 discussion questions ● Cafeteria drawing ● Journal entry

Finally, once your group has solved the mystery, one team member must write your answer in the comments section on today’s Daily Post. Make this comment subtle and sneaky, you don’t want to give other teams the answer!!

Thinking about Gender Gender norms are those social norms that are differentiated for girls and boys, and men and women. While some gender norms can be positive, (such as showing loyalty to family) others can be restrictive and harmful in that they limit people’s life choices, lead to inequitable treatment or discrimination, and foster acceptance of gender-based violence. Beliefs about gender norms and roles are socially constructed. That is, the types of behaviours considered acceptable, appropriate or desirable for a person based on their gender are created by societies. Gender norms include attitudes about what it means to act, speak, dress and express oneself as masculine or feminine. Different gender identities are created through various elements coming together at any point in time, drawing on social expectations which can change depending on where in life’s stage an individual is located. We need to learn about the ways in which gender norms are created and transmitted. We need to think critically about and challenge the limiting nature of many traditional gender norms. Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWu44AqF0iI My friend is about to announce the birth of a new baby! Do you know anyone who has had a baby? Think about the first questions that tend to be asked in response to a baby announcement - such as; is it a boy or a girl? What is its name? Are the mother and baby healthy? Using a T-Chart, brainstorm some of the things that might be different for the baby, based on whether it is born a male or female: Here are some prompts to help you: What kind of clothes might the girl baby/boy baby be dressed in? What kinds of gifts might the girl baby/boy baby receive when they are born? On their first birthday? On their fourth birthday? What kinds of hobbies, toys or games might the girl child/boy child be offered by their parents/carers or family members?

Reflection:

Write three sentences reflecting on your thinking. What do you notice about how people act or respond differently to the child as a boy or a girl? To what extent might these actions or responses play a part in

shaping the identity of the child (or shaping how the child grows up) as a boy or as a girl?

Reading

Warm Up: Read the following piece of text and answer the comprehension questions in your Literacy book.

Grandma stared out her bedroom window. “No flowers, no trees - just concrete and cars. Time to go home.” Her cane rapped the floor as she turned to face Madison and Dad. “This is your home now,” Dad said. “And you’ve got lots of squished flowers.” Madison pointed to the artwork Grandma had brought from her old home. Frames and frames of squished flowers sat upright on the floor against the wall. “Pressed flowers, Madison.” Grandma pinched a flower off her windowsill violet. She showed Madison how to flatten the blossom in an encyclopedia. “So the flower’s beauty stays forever.” Later that week, as Madison skipped home from school, she was about to hop over a sidewalk crack and avoid years of bad luck, when she saw a wildflower poking out. She uprooted the flower and pressed it at home. A week later, the petals were flat, brittle, and delicate like the butterfly wing she had once found on a school trip at the botanical gardens. She gently lifted the pressed flower and glued it onto paper. She framed it with cardboard and presented it to Grandma. “It’s lovely,” said Grandma.

Complete the following questions in your Literacy book: 1. How does Grandma feel about her new home in the city? How do you know this? 2. Based on what you read, what is one of Grandma’s interests? 3. Do you think it would be easy for Grandma to keep in touch with her old friends? Why or why not? Part 1: There are a variety of different stories attached to today’s Daily Post on Google Classroom. You need to select one of these stories to work with today. Activity: Your task is to rewrite the story you have chosen into a script that is simple to follow that could be used for Readers’ Theatre! You should complete this task on Google Docs. Step 1: Read through your chosen story and take down all of the different characters that feature, including the narrator. Step 2: Think about the scripts you have read this week and how they are set out. There is an image below to help you. Step 3: Rewrite your chosen story as an easy-to-follow script on Google Docs. Step 4: Upload your script to Google Classroom. Bonus challenge! Gather up your family members or friends and use your new script to perform Readers’ Theatre. You may record this and upload it to Google Classroom too. Students that complete this challenge will receive a bonus on Classroom Economy! Here is a picture of what a good script should look like. Follow this template when creating your script on Google Docs.
