Day 1

Reading

FOCUS: VISUALISING Visualising is drawing on prior knowledge and the five senses to create a mental image of what is being read. Task: Read through the passage from Harry Potter at the end of the planner and highlight the words and phrases that the author has used that helps you to create an image in your head of the Great Hall. (Use your iPad’s text to speech feature if you need to!) Notice that each sentence adds further detail to the image. Draw a detailed picture of the Great Hall using the words and phrases to guide your drawing. Make sure that each highlighted word or phrase is illustrated in your picture. Once you have finished your highlighting of the passage and your matching illustration, take a photo and send it to your teacher on Seesaw. Independent Reading: Students read their take home books and/or other ‘just right’ books that they may have at home. Active Learn is also available for use at home: ActiveLearn: Login (activelearnprimary.com.au)

Writing

FOCUS: UNIQUE NARRATIVES Daily Practise: ‘wa’ spelling pattern: Geraldine the Giraffe learns /wa/ - YouTube How many words can you find where the ‘wa’ actually says ‘wor’!

Task: Little Red Riding Hood with a Twist Today we are going to re-write the story of Little Red Riding Hood, but not as we all know it! We are going to use the same characters, and the same setting, but the events are going to be slightly different. We are going to give you the beginning of the story, and we would like you to choose an alternative ending, and then write that ending to complete the story. Everything you need is attached at the end of the planner. Upload your story ending to Seesaw once you have finished. We cannot wait to read!!

Maths FOCUS: MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION Daily Practise: Record your skip counting backwards by 3s, 5s, and 7s from any 2-digit number. Task: You will be applying your division and multiplication strategies to help you solve some problems. Before you begin your task, tap on this link https://youtu.be/LNZUErh3rUM to listen to a division carnival story, to help you think about dividing numbers. There is a worksheet at the end of the planner. You need to read the worded problems carefully and underline the key words that tell you whether you need to multiply (make bigger) or divide (make smaller). Refer to the division strategies poster to remind you of the different ways you can use division to solve the problem. Challenge: At a party the lollies were shared. Each person got 3. How many people were at the party and how many lollies were there altogether? Can you come up with 3 different answers?

BQT FOCUS: We are learning about why some mixtures have been created. Watch the video for an explanation about mixtures. https://youtu.be/g4Mcy0mLyjk Task: You need to sort mixtures into different categories depending on their purpose. We will do this using a T-chart which is a great way to organise information. You can find a T-chart at the end of the document.

Day 3

Reading

FOCUS: VISUALISING Visualising is drawing on prior knowledge and the five senses to create a mental image of what is being read. Task: Read the passage from George’s Marvellous Medicine at the end of the planner. Highlight the words and phrases that helped you to create a picture in your head of what happened when grandma drank the potion. Look through your highlighted words and phrases and write down at least 5 examples in your workbook that you thought were very descriptive and helpful for visualising. Independent Reading: Students read their take home books and/or other ‘just right’ books that they may have at home. Active Learn is also available for use at home: ActiveLearn: Login (activelearnprimary.com.au)

Writing

FOCUS: NARRATIVES Daily Practise: ‘wa’ word search (See attachment below) Task: You will need a stopwatch or timer to help you with your writing task today! Rocket Writing. Today’s writing is in two parts. For the first part, you will choose from the three writing prompts and just start writing, for 20 minutes. You just write, don’t plan, try not to stop, keep those ideas flowing. You don’t need to complete your story in 20 minutes, just write what you can in that amount of time. When your timer goes off, take a breather for a few minutes then reset the timer for 15 minutes. During this 15 minutes you will read back over your writing and revise and edit it. You might need to read your writing 3-4 times to do this. Check for the following:

1. Does my writing make sense? 2. Have I used capital letters when needed MINTS - Months, the word I, Names, Titles and Sentence starts? 3. Does every sentence end with the correct punctuation? 4. Have I spelled each word as well as I can? 5. Have I included details that help my reader to visualise?

Writing prompts:

1. Write an alternative ending for your favorite book or movie. 2. I looked out the window and couldn’t believe what I saw… 3. You’re handed a letter with your name on it. When you open it up you can’t believe your eyes…

Upload your rocket writing to Seesaw once you have finished.

Maths

FOCUS: MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION Daily Practise: Tap on this link for a quiz game to practise place value - https://wordwall.net/play/19037/818/214 Task: The focus of your task is division - sharing items into equal groups. Your task is on Seesaw. It is important that you tap on the play button to view the powerpoint because a teacher will re-introduce and revise what division means and the strategy of sharing and grouping to solve division problems. Challenge: There are 54 cats. The vet needed to divide the cats into equal groupings to stay in the animal hospital overnight. Can you help the vet sort this out? How many groups can the cats be equally sorted into? How many cats are in the groups? Can you find 2 different solutions to this problem?

STEAM

FOCUS: COLOUR MIXING Check out the STEM activity sheet at the end of the planner. Follow the method and see what you discover! So much colour mixing fun to have. Before you add the food colour mixture to the pan, predict what you think will happen. After you have completed the STEM experiment, answer the following questions. Why do you think the baking soda bubbles when the colour mixture is added?

How do the colours change when they are mixed?

What happens if you add more mixture?

Day 1: Reading - Visualising Read the passage below. Think carefully about the words the author has chosen to create an image in your mind. She builds the picture of what the Great Hall looks like by adding more and more detail to her writing. Using a highlighter or light coloured pencil, highlight the words and phrases that help you to create an image. Draw the great hall and include all the information you have highlighted in your drawing.

The Great Hall

Day 1 Writing Task

Once upon a time, a girl called Red lived with her mother, in a cottage on the outskirts of a great forest. On this particular spring day, Mother took a batch of fresh cupcakes from the oven and placed them on the table, where they steamed gently. Red smelt the cupcakes before she saw them: sweet, buttery and delicious. As she entered the kitchen, she imagined sinking her teeth through the soft sponge for a huge bite. She reached out to take one, but her mother stopped her and explained that they were for her dear grandmother. Red was to deliver them to her grandmother for morning tea, so off she went. As she skipped merrily through the sun-dappled forest, Little Red’s hazel eyes sparkled and her bright red cape swung just above her ankles. Occasionally, Red would pause and lightly touch the petals of the wildflowers with her dainty fingers as she stopped to smell them. It was a warm day, and it was hard to believe that anything fearsome lived in these woods. It was the perfect day for a picnic. Red thought longingly of the cupcakes in her basket. In fact, she was so busy thinking about cupcakes that she didn’t spot a shadowy figure leaning against a tree trunk.

What happens next? Select an alternative ending to the ending you know with the big bad wolf. You could choose from the ones below or create your own.

The shadowy figure is a lost little boy, desperate for a friend and a bite to eat.

The shadowy figure is a frightened rabbit in search of his burrow.

The shadowy figure is grandma out collecting flowers.
