VISUAL CONSTANCIES The relative perceptual stability of size,
shape, brightness and orientation of objects despite changes in the visual stimulus on the retina.
Size Shape Brightness Orientation ....of an object stays “constant” although
our retinal image of it has changed.
SIZE CONSTANCY Maintaining an object’s perceived size
despite changes to the size of the retinal image.
EG) When we see a person far away, the retinal image is smaller than if the person was closer, however we don’t think the person has shrunk
SHAPE CONSTANCY Maintaining an object’s perceived shape
despite changes to the shape of the retinal image.
EG) The retinal image of a football changes when viewed from different angles however, we maintain its shape and do not think it is distorting
BRIGHTNESS CONSTANCY Maintaining an object’s perceived
brightness, relative to it’s surroundings, despite changes in the amount of light received by the retina.
EG) The brightness of a car remains constant on a cloudy day, as its surroundings have been altered by the same level of brightness.
ORIENTATION CONSTANCY Maintaining an object’s position in the
environment despite changes to the orientation of the image on the retina.
EG) Light poles, trees and traffic lights are usually perceived as vertical regardless of which position we are viewing them
