The Pulitzer Prize Board has determined that there was no

evidence warranting the removal of best-selling author Junot Díaz from the board, after conducting what it termed a “wide-ranging independent review.”

The Board issued a statement Friday, Nov. 16, saying that the litigation firm Williams & Connolly conducted a five-month review which involved interviews with dozens of witnesses and analysis of hundreds of pages of documents and audio.

“The review did not find evidence warranting removal of Professor Díaz from the Board. Accordingly, after full discussion and consideration by the members, Professor Díaz will be welcomed to resume his full duties as a Board member and to fulfill his term, which expires in April of 2019.” The Pulitzer Prizes were established by Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-American journalist and newspaper publisher. He bequeathed funding to Columbia University upon his death in 1911, and part of his bequest was used to found the School of Journalism in 1912 and to establish the Pulitzer Prizes, which were first awarded in 1917.

Díaz cleared by Pulitzer board

Díaz, the Pulitzer-Prize winning author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, issued a statement to the New York Times, saying, “I am grateful the investigation found the truth,” and “I look forward to returning to the Pulitzer’s important work.”‎

In May, writer Zinzi Clemmons accused Díaz of inappropriate conduct. “As a grad

student, I invited Junot Díaz to speak to a workshop on issues of representation in literature,” she tweeted. “I was an unknown wide-eyed 26-year-old, and he used it as an opportunity to corner and forcibly kiss me. I’m far from the only one he’s done this 2, I refuse to be silent anymore.”

Reactions to his re-instatement varied.

Some called out Clemmons and others and claimed they were in it for professional gain. @CosasDeK tweeted: “#JunotDíaz He was publicly shamed for no reason. The case against Junot Díaz was based on the most asinine accusation ever. The woman that dropped the “verbal sexual assault” line was desperate to be part of the story.”

Others took a different view.Christina Sommers, a feminist scholar at

the American Enterprise Institute, wrote: “So far, charges against writer #JunotDíaz

Inwood residents were shocked and saddened when Carrot Top

announced its doors would close by January 2019.

“We can’t afford to stay”

The longtime Inwood bakery and eatery has not had gas for more than a year, which reduced business by 40 percent, according to a sign posted in the eatery’s window this past Mon., Nov. 19th.

Carrot Top first opened the 5025 Broadway location in 1969. They quickly stole the neighborhood’s hearts (and stomachs) with their delicious cakes, carrot muffins, mango

rugelach and other divine desserts.

According to store employee Pedro Prudencio, management company Ventura Land Corp. regularly promised that the gas problem would be fixed. “They said they would fix it in one month, two months, six months. It’s a year already, and still they don’t know when. We can’t afford to stay longer.”

He noted that the street outside of the store was recently co-named after the founder, Renee Mancino who died in November of 2014 of a self-inflicted

gunshot wound. “Two losses—her and now the store,” he said.

Prudencio, who has worked at the store for 11 years, said that the Inwood employees would re-locate to the larger Washington Heights location at 3931 Broadway.

Customer William Xucla said he barely remembers a time when Carrot Top wasn’t in the neighborhood. He was surprised to find they were closing due to a lack of gas. “Is that even legal?” he asked.

Xucla said he’s been eating their danishes for more than 40 years, “Even though I’ve become a pre-diabetic, I still risk it because it’s so wonderful. They use very good butter. He added that he hope they re-open somewhere else in the area. “They’ve done very well here.”

Matte Gordon, a resident at 5025 Broadway, said that tenants have been in the same boat. “We’ve been in a similar plight where we’ve had no cooking gas as well. It’s just starting to be restored.”

Gordon said the building’s infrastructure was old. The management company originally ripped out the meters, but then Con Edison had to redo all of the gas lines. “They’ve been breaking down walls in apartments. They’ve just started doing the work about a month ago,” she said.

Tenants were given electric burners for cooking. “It took a while,” she said. “I personally requested it and asked if they would reimburse us. They said no because it was a fire hazard.” After management realized it would be a long time without gas, they reversed that decision. “They posted a notice in the elevator saying, ‘We will be providing Black and Decker double burners for you to borrow.’ Somebody put a big question mark and wrote: No fire hazard? And to borrow?’”

Gordon added that the rent-stabilized building is well-maintained. “It’s a great building otherwise.”

When The Manhattan Times called Ventura Land Corp. requesting a comment, the person who answered the phone only said “No,” and promptly hung up.

The City Council passed a legislative package on

November 14 aimed at assisting cab drivers, including one bill to establish a task force that will study the devaluation of taxi medallions in recent years.

Many cab drivers have been forced into bankruptcy and financial ruin — and several have committed suicide — as the value of medallions has plummeted from $1.3 million in 2014 to as little as $100,000 currently.

The task force will consist of nine members from various city agencies and sectors of the taxi industry.

Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez, who sponsored the bill creating the task force, said his primary goal was helping not large for-hire vehicles corporations, but the 6,000 individual medallion owners in the city.

When I began as Chancellor just over six months ago, I

went on a listening tour across 62 schools and 45 town halls in 5 boroughs.

I heard from students, families, teachers and administrators about what they wanted to see in their schools. Across the board, I heard a call for three things: increased access to technology; improved classroom facilities; and air conditioning in schools. This month, we are taking concrete steps to make these things happen.

On November 1, I announced the largest-ever proposed Five-Year Capital Plan, which will fund new and updated school facilities across our city. With this $17 billion plan, the School Construction Authority and the Department of Education are investing in increased access to technology, more permanent classroom facilities, air conditioning in every classroom, increased accessibility, and so much more.

The students of New York need access to high-speed internet and WiFi so that they can engage with the newest technologies, learn computer science and robotics, and be prepared for the careers of the future. Our proposed Capital Plan includes a $750 million investment in new technology and upgraded bandwidth, so more students will learn in the 21st century, high-tech classrooms they deserve.

In a city as large as New York, we often have to think creatively to find space for our 1.1 million students. With this Capital Plan, we will invest $8.8 billion in capacity projects, including creating 57,000 new school seats across the city and continuing our work to reduce class sizes and overcrowding. We’re well on our way to meeting our commitment of 83,000 new seats under this administration. We will build new Pre-K and 3-K centers to meet the needs of our youngest learners,

and continue our investment in creating permanent classroom facilities, so that students will no longer have to attend classes in trailers.

For my first four months in New York City, it was hot. I knew then, and I continued to hear from students and families everywhere I went, that we needed to make air conditioning a priority.

Thanks to Mayor de Blasio’s AC for All initiative, we currently have air conditioning in 80 percent of classrooms. But we need to do more. That’s why with this proposed Capital Plan,

we will speed up our investment in AC for All, so that all classrooms will have air conditioning installed by 2021—a year ahead of schedule.

Este mes, estamos tomando medidas concretas para que todo esto sea una realidad.

AHarlem post office commemorated a piece of

history this week.

The Colonial Park Post Office at 99 Macombs Place was renamed the Tuskegee Airmen Post Office Building on Monday, Nov. 20.

On hand to celebrate the dedication was former SStg. Wilfred DeFour, 100, who was an aircraft technician with the Tuskegee Airmen.

After the service, he worked for the postal service for 33 years.

“I regret that so many of my comrades are no longer here with us,” said DeFour.

“Renaming this post office facility after the Tuskegee Airmen is a fitting tribute to their honor, their memory and contributions to this country,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat.

Changing the name of a post office requires an act of Congress. Last November, Espaillat introduced the bill which unanimously passed in both the House and the Senate. It was signed into law in July.

“It’s remarkable to get the bipartisan support to be able to bring us all together,” said former Congressman Charles Rangel.

Also present were Assemblymembers Al Taylor and Inez Dickens.

Signed, sealed and delivered

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African Americans to fly in the U.S. Army Air Corps. The segregated unit paved the way for the eventual integration of the U.S. armed forces.

DeFour joined the service in 1942. After basic training, he became an aircraft technician at Ramitelli Airfield in Northern Italy, home base of the Tuskegee Airmen. He serviced the 332nd Fighter Group’s aircraft. Allies called

them “Redtails” because of the bright red paint on the planes. The Luftwaffe called them Schwarze Vogelmenschen or “Black Birdmen.” During World War II, they flew more than 15,000 individual sorties, or combat missions, in North Africa and Europe.

“It was a great experience,” said DeFour. “We didn’t know that we were making history at the time. We were just doing our job.”

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African Americans to fly in the U.S. Army Air Corps.


The buildings were designed by Moore & Landsiedel, Benjamin F.V. Driesler, Louis Kurtz, C.G. de Neergarrd and A.H. Zacharias, and have detached and basement garages and front yards. Built between 1920 and 1935, they reflect a suburban style rarely found in Manhattan.

According to the resolution, 10 of the 15 owners support the designation and the other five could not be reached. Dave Thom, a spokesperson for the Park Terrace North Block Association, said the many individuals, preservation activists and community

members responsible for the proposed district have been working on this since 2010. He noted that Manhattan has 79 historic districts, and the significant structures and streetscapes reflecting

Inwood’s history and unique character also deserve preservation.

“After so many years of effort, we are pleased that the LPC has chosen to formally evaluate this set of 15 properties for a potential Historic District, and we hope that expansion and additional districts will be possible in the near future,” he said.


Yes, and more please.

Community members and preservation advocates are excited about the prospect of Inwood’s first historic district. They also say many more sites deserve preservation.

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) recently proposed the designation of a historic district comprising 15 buildings along Park Terrace West and West 217th Street. The area features two-story, free-standing and semi-detached houses of Craftsman and Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival styles.

At LPC’s public hearing on Tuesday, Nov. 20, Community Board 12 Chair Shahabudeen Ally said CB12’s Land Use Committee unanimously passed a resolution in support of the proposed historic district the night before.

“We’d like this to be the first of many others. If you ask me, you can make the entire neighborhood a historic district,” he said. The full community board is expected to vote at the end of the month.

Bring a few extra bucks for the jukebox.

Speaking of old school, take a trip back into time by taking a stroll through Inwood Hill Park, the last remaining forest in Manhattan. There is no place like this urban oasis in all of Manhattan. While you are there stop by the nearby Indian Road Café for some exquisite and innovative fare with a pretty good craft beer selection.

C hristmas is actor Jeffrey Rashad’s favorite time of

year. As a child he loved watching all of the traditional holiday movies. Performing in The Classical Theatre of Harlem’s (CTH) upcoming production of A Christmas Carol is like coming full circle.

Rashad plays both Bob Cratchit and Young Scrooge. It’s a challenging combination.

“With Young Scrooge, you can see the battle of what he envisions his life versus what it actually is,” he said. “Bob Cratchit is so cheerful and happy. But that’s a choice he’s made. You don’t see his situation as a reason to be optimistic. The challenge is finding his journey versus someone who is grumpy and dour as Scrooge.”

At the top of the play, audiences meet Ebenezer Scrooge as a miserly old man. Over the course of three nights, Scrooge, a rapacious uptown landlord, is visited by a series of ghosts who reveal his past, present and future.

The original novella by Charles Dickens is set in 1840’s London. Shawn Rene Graham’s adaptation is set in modern day Harlem with a rhythm and blues, pop and Latinx musical overlay. Directed by Steve H. Broadnax III, the play features performers from Elisa

Monte Dance, where choreographer Tiffany Rea-Fisher is the artistic director. Fisher also choreographed CTH’s critically acclaimed production of Antigone.

Scrooge doesn’t say “Bah, humbug” in this version. Uptown audiences will get the new exclamation of indignation, said Jones. Like the original, there are references to power and class, wealth inequality and the

dire consequences of lacking compassion for the less fortunate.

“We reference things in Harlem,” said Jones. “Folks will be like, yeah, I know that spot. But we tip our hat to Charles Dickens, too.”

Raina MacCallister was delighted to find an art

gallery in Inwood.

The eight-and-a-half-year old had never been to one.

When Aaron Simms, founder of Inwood Art Works, asked what she liked best, she said, “Everything.”

The Broadway pop-up gallery has had that effect on a lot of people. “She loved the fact that it was right in the neighborhood. She was even inspired to submit a work for the next show,” said Simms.

New shows unveiled at pop-up art space

For the second time in two years, Inwood Art Works features a wide variety of art and events at the pop-up gallery at 4857 Broadway. The nonprofit organization seeks to “create and curate professional performing and visual arts” uptown.

The storefront gallery is housed at the Stack, the striking apartment building composed entirely of modular units.

The group’s opening show, “My Neighbor,

the Artist” features sculpture, photos, paintings and more by several local artists. The show closes Nov. 25th.

The second show, “What the World Needs Now,” will feature nearly 60 artists, including MacCallister’s photo collage. Simms said it is designed to show what happens if artists had the power to make leading decisions in society.

Professional football players are at high risk for

concussion, and football is the most common sport in which kids experience concussions.

But it is not the only one. All contact sports are high risk, but so are the elementary school playground, car and bicycle accidents, and falls. Anytime we abruptly hit or whiplash our heads, concussion may follow.

1. What is a concussion? When we experience a blow or jolt to the head, we are at risk for a concussion, which is considered a mild traumatic brain injury. Our brains sit inside our skulls with room to move. This is mostly a good thing, but sudden movement – either a direct blow to the head or a jolt to the body that causes the head to jerk, will cause the brain to bounce, slosh around or twist inside the skull. This leads to stretching and damaging of brain cells and chemical changes in the brain. Typical symptoms of concussion are headache, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, problems with memory and concentration, depression, sensitivity to light and/or noise, blurred vision, sleep troubles, and restlessness. Because these symptoms usually resolve in 1-2 weeks and are not

life-threatening, concussions are typically considered "mild" traumatic brain injuries. However, the effects can be serious and last for many weeks, or even longer.

2. Concussions are common and underreported. In the U.S., about one in five adolescent athletes has had one diagnosed concussion. The odds are greater for kids playing competitive, contact sports. Football is the most common cause of concussion but ice hockey, soccer, cycling and skateboarding all contribute to the count. With more careful monitoring these days, we are discovering that many concussions

are not reported at the time of the injury. This is of particular concern because a past history of an untreated concussion is associated with more serious symptoms and higher loss of consciousness rates when subsequent concussions occur.

3. Sometimes the effects linger. Most individuals who experience a

concussion will fully recover from the insult to the brain. It can take a few days, a

few weeks or even a few months. A significant minority of individuals do

not experience improvement within this window of time

and may even experience a worsening of symptoms. This protracted condition is called Post-concussion Syndrome, which is notably not correlated with the severity of the injury. Individuals who experience repeated concussions are at risk for developing what the forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu ‎identified in 2002 as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). Dr. Omalu examined the post-mortem brain of Mike Webster, former center for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs, and other professional football players who died prematurely following careers as world-class athletes that gave way to profound states of cognitive and behavioral decline and premature death. In doing so, Dr. Omalu identified CTE as an irreversible neurodegenerative condition that shows the kind of brain damage seen in the brains of individuals with dementia, as well as in some retired boxers. As was dramatically captured in the real-life movie Concussion (starring Will Smith as Dr. Omalu), the NFL first dismissed and discredited Dr. Omalu. When those strategies failed, they fought to silence him. But ultimately, the truth won out.

4. Concussion and mental disorders. It's no surprise that an injury to the brain can worsen existing mental health issues or bring about new mental health problems affecting mood, concentration, memory and personality. Pre-existing mental health problems predict worse outcome following a concussion, and a concussion increases risk for mental health problems. People who develop Post-concussion Syndrome are more likely to have had a history

Some were clearly jubilant at the news. Muchachita Fresca @Roselangie tweeted: “YES!!!! YES!!! Look @ how God works #JunotDíaz fully cleared by the ‎#Pulitzerboard, by #MIT, by#BostonReview - a wrap. If his three main accusers were to have an inch of decency they’d #ApologizetoJunot for the absurdity, lies, & unfairness they subjected Junot/his supporters 2.”

And if I wasn’t a “real” Dominican man I wasn’t anything. The rape excluded me from manhood, from love, from everything.”

Díaz, who has helped to fundraise and has been a vocal advocate for the bookshop, has been called Word Up’s “patron saint.”

In an unofficial statement, founder Veronica Liu said, “At Word Up Community Bookshop, we have had lots of discussion about this, and are still discussing, and grappling. While we are still wrestling with how all this may change our relationship with Junot, we do agree that we want to affirm that sexual assault and harassment are never acceptable or justified, and we are working to promote voices that may be muffled or silenced through this endemic cultural violence. We are also working to understand how to respond in relational ways to relational problems, rather than making immediate decisions about who is or is not included in our space.”

cuando Carrot Top anunció que sus puertas se cerrarían a fin de enero 2019.

La panadería y restaurante de Inwood de mucho tiempo no ha tenido gas durante más de un año, lo que redujo el negocio en un 40 por ciento, según un letrero en la ventana del restaurante.

Carrot Top abrió por primera vez la ubicación de del No. 5025 de Broadway en 1969. Se robaron rápidamente los corazones (y los estómagos) del vecindario con sus deliciosos pasteles, magdalenas de zanahoria, rugelach de mango y otros postres divinos.

De acuerdo con Pedro Prudencio, empleado de la tienda, la compañía de administración Ventura Land Corp., regularmente prometió que el problema del gas se solucionaría. “Dijeron que lo arreglarían en un mes, dos meses, seis meses. Ya ha pasado un año y todavía no saben cuándo. No podemos quedarnos más tiempo”.

Señaló que la calle afuera de la tienda fue nombrada recientemente en honor a la fundadora, Renee Mancino, quien murió en noviembre de 2014 de una herida de bala auto infligida. “Dos pérdidas, ella y ahora la tienda”, dijo.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. “We have so many different perspectives, and that is the great thing. There is a real joy in the works, a great sense of enthusiasm.”

More than half of the submissions are from artists that are new to Inwood Art Works. “More and more people are discovering us,” Simms said. “The work ranges from the political, abstract images, photos that capture a moment in time. There are multiple mediums that capture our multicultural neighborhood. It’s truly representative of the neighborhood.”

“What the World Needs Now” will run from Nov. 30 until Dec. 23.

The Inwood Jazz Quintet will perform at the gallery Dec. 1st. “These are people you’d pay a lot of money to see downtown,” said Simms.

Throughout December, the gallery will host several workshops on producing artistic projects, family story time, networking events and more.

Simms is also busy preparing for a third gallery show, which will run from the New Year until Jan. 18. “Elevated Lines” showcases the work of Inwood photographer Bruce Katz.

Simms said he was grateful to the building’s owners who allowed Inwood Art Works to come back for a second year in a row, and also for extending time for a third show. “They see the impact it is having on the community,” he said, adding, “They are the best landlords I’ve ever had.”

One of the structures in the proposed historic district, 529 West 217th Street, has a unique place in history. In 1970, it was the home of State Supreme Court Justice John Murtaugh. He was involved in the pre-trial hearings of members of the Black Panthers, who were accused of bombing public places. Members of the Weather Underground detonated three gasoline bombs outside of his house. No one was hurt, but the house was slightly damaged.

Jesse Dennon of the Historic Districts Council said, “A contemporaneous New York Times article noted that Murtaugh refused to

publicly discuss the incident but detectives said, 'He and his family had taken the incident coolly.’”

Inwood resident and preservationist Pat Courtney also urged the LPC to study Inwood for future districts. “The great parklands of Inwood – Fort Washington, Isham and Inwood Hill Parks – should be designated as WPA or New Deal era scenic landmarks, especially now that we hear calls for a “Green New Deal,” said Courtney. “If designated, they would join Ft. Tryon Park, which is shared between Washington Heights and Inwood, and is already a scenic landmark.”

Ally also suggested that LPC take a wider look at Northern Manhattan and consider Washington Heights as well.

“We ask that there be further action,” he said.

U na oficina de correos de Harlem conmemoró un pedazo de historia

esta semana.

El lunes 20 de noviembre, la oficina de correos de Colonial Park -en el No. 99 de Macombs Place- recibió el nuevo nombre de Oficina de Correos Pilotos de Tuskegee.

Presente para celebrar la dedicación estuvo el ex sargento Wilfred DeFour, 100, quien fue técnico de aviación con los Pilotos de Tuskegee.

Después del servicio, trabajó para el servicio postal durante 33 años.

“You feel like you are looking into your own neighborhood,” Rashad said. “It’s very accessible, whether you’ve seen the original Christmas Carol or not.”

Originally from Milwaukee, Rashad studied acting at Howard University. After a stint in Los Angeles, he moved east and settled in Central Harlem.

He was surprised to find a college buddy, Kahil X. Daniel, at the audition. Daniel turned out to be the play’s musical director. “His style is in the way of Donny Hathaway’s Christmas music. There are a lot of R&B harmonies coming together,” said Rashad. “It’s going to make you move.”

Each of the three ghosts – Christmas Present, Past and Future – have their own signature style with an entourage that orchestrates earthly events from the other side.

But according to Rashad, it is Bob Cratchit who genuinely invokes a holiday spirit. “Being kind to everyone you meet is the spirit of Christmas. Kindness can change everything. How different would the world be if everyone was kind?”

Rashad’s favorite moment of the play is when Scrooge wakes up and realizes he’s wasted so much time. “That’s when all of the stories converge and interlock. Not only

because the lead character arrives at a realization, so does the audience.”

That moment reminds him of something one of his Howard professors used to say, “When you are reaching for that next level, your other hand should be reaching down to lift someone else up to their next spot.”

And a large 2013 population-based study from Denmark suggests individuals with traumatic brain injuries, including concussions, are four times more likely to develop a mental illness. At the most severe end of the continuum, those who develop Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy as described above, suffer with cognitive impairment, dementia, and profound mood disturbances that increase risk for suicide.

5. Concussion care is rapidly evolving. When my daughter accidentally slammed her head against a cinderblock wall last year, she developed classic signs of concussion and was instructed to follow the classic, evidence-based recommendations as described above, and like the majority of individuals, she recovered within a few weeks. For those whose symptoms endure, new evidence-based recommendations to treat Post-concussion Syndrome include moderate exercise, rehabilitative physical therapy, nutritional supplements, vestibular and visual rehab, and integration of education and psychotherapy as needed.

Of course, prevention would be even better. And now, from the NFL on down to the Mighty Mites, many football organizations are leading the charge to develop new rules, policies and equipment designed to prevent head injuries. Helmet innovation and design ideas are coming from the most unlikely of places, including woodpeckers. A woodpecker sustains a steady succession

of blows to its head – pecking at a force equivalent to going from 26,000 miles per hour to a complete stop every second – without brain damage. Equipment designers are now looking to these wondrous birds to inspire protective collars and better helmets. One of the most promising high-tech strategies is a helmet with sensors embedded in the interior lining to detect forces exerted upon the wearer so that the degree of insult to the brain can be carefully monitored, minimized and addressed.

The truth is that we are all vulnerable to concussions, with some sports and activities increasing the risk. The bottom line: from concussion to mental illness, it's in our heads and we need to mind.

revealed the city’s most popular pooch names, ranked by neighborhood. In addition to offering granular insights on residential buildings and community life, the website also tracks the prevalence of dogs in neighborhoods, and their names.

“New Yorkers are more alike than they may realize when it comes to naming their dogs,” said Alon Goldstein, Localize.city urban planner. “Neighborhoods with widely different demographics and types of housing have similar dog names.”

They padded through the city’s Department of Health’s 2016 dog registration data and sorted it by zip code. Bella won the most popular female dog name in 72 areas across the city, particularly in South and East Brooklyn and the North and East sections of the Bronx.

Max was the top male dog name in 57 neighborhoods, especially in the Upper

Dog TagWest Side, Park Slope, Jackson Heights and Clason Point. Max was most popular in Brooklyn and Queens, but tied with Rocky in the Bronx. Rocky was also a hit in a large section of Staten Island and Upper Manhattan.

Charlie was the preferred name for most Manhattan canines.
