Water, water everywhere.After a week filled with images of

torrential rains, flooded towns and cresting rivers, and the one-year anniversary of Hurricane María, water – and its immense power – is omnipresent.

These concerns are the perfect backdrop for This Sinking Island, a play about a family who must leave everything behind to find a new home.

Directed by Washington Heights resident Melissa Moschitto, the play’s Northern Manhattan tour will debut at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum on Sunday, October 21st. The play is one of several original works created by The Anthropologists, an uptown ensemble theater company.

The play features original music by Mariah Freda, and the creative and production team also includes Brianna Kalisch (Co-Deviser), Lynde Rosario (Dramaturg) and Irina Kuraeva (Visual Design).

Moschitto said the play was inspired by stories of Virginia’s vanishing Tangier Island and the Republic of Kiribati, a South Pacific archipelago that is also being slowly enveloped by sea level rise. Much of the play’s dialogue is based on real-life climate

refugees—people who’ve left their homes because they’ve become uninhabitable.

“These are stories that aren’t typically heard,” she said. She hastened to add that refugee is an imperfect term for people who’ve fled due to climate change. She thinks the stories will resonate with Northern Manhattan residents—especially the idea of leaving home, finding a new land and feeling accepted.

“So much culture and way of life is tied to your geographic place,” said Moschitto. “Having no choice but to leave your home and having nowhere to turn. I think Washington Heights creates a sanctuary space for people.”

“This past year, I’ve seen my friends and neighbors united to create a formidable network of support for families under threat, creating a true sanctuary here in Upper Manhattan,” she added. “It is my hope that our play can work in tandem to forge new conversations about who we are and how we can take care of each other.”

Now in its tenth year, the award-winning theater company is invested in telling stories through music and physical movement, and describes its mission as “the collaborative creation of investigative theatre that inspires action.” It has been the recipient of an inaugural UMEZ Arts Engagement

Stronger stuff is needed.Councilmembers who have

introduced new legislation designed to strengthen the city’s “Right to Counsel” law, passed last year that provided legal representation for low-income tenants facing eviction in housing court, argue that the original law needs to be strengthened.

Intro 214-B, passed in August 2017, mandated the New York City Office of Civil Justice to provide renters with incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty line – or $50,200 annually for a family of four – with free legal representation when facing an eviction.

On September 12, City Councilmembers Mark Levine and Vanessa Gibson, the lead sponsors of Intro 214-B, unveiled additional legislation to expand the law.

The new bill would increase the program’s income threshold to 400 percent of the federal poverty line, expand Right to Counsel outside of housing court, and connect tenants to attorneys before they arrive at court.

“The passage of our Right to Counsel law last year was a historic step towards justice in NYC’s housing courts, where for generations the vast majority of tenants faced the threat of eviction without the benefit of legal representation,” said Levine. “The stakes for implementation couldn’t be

one year into the five-year implementation of the law, tenants have seen “dramatic results.” He listed the following as evidence: “eviction rate is DOWN 24%; # of legal aid attorneys working with tenants UP from 200 to 500; total # of eviction cases DOWN by almost 10%.”

And while the current law guarantees tenants an attorney for the entirety of their case, it does not cover appeals. With more tenants than ever being represented and winning their cases, landlords are filing more appeals.

Levine and advocates said an expansion of Right to Counsel was needed to cover appeals as well as a broader range of hearings.

The people have spoken. Before we even get into who won what, let us bask for a moment in the turnout for the election this past Thursday.

According to a tweet by NYC Councilmember Mark Levine, the number of New Yorkers who voted in the Democratic primary election for Governor more than tripled from 573, 350 in 2014 to a whopping 1,487,137 this year. That enthusiasm is a good sign and could presage a much-needed Blue Tsunami. This is not a matter of hyperbole – the upcoming mid-term elections could be one of the most important in this country’s history. Either we the people put a brake on the Trump Regime or it will do away once and for all with our precious but fragile democracy. The consequences are that dire and stark. Even if the Democrats win big this November there is still a chance that Trump could win a second term. The horror. Roger Cohen of the NY Times penned a column entitled “This Is Not the End of Trump” that spelled out that unfortunate but realistic eventuality.

The civic fervor was felt intensely on the local level. Six out of the 8 members of the former Independent Democratic Conference (IDC) were voted out of office and punished by the electorate for diluting the power of the Democratic Party in Albany.

Woeful.A new report examining the racial

diversity among top staff of the U.S. House of Representatives finds that personnel levels fall “woefully short” of representing the racial diversity of the nation.

Issued this week by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, the report examined diversity among chiefs of staff, legislative directors, and communications directors in the Washington, D.C. personal offices of U.S. House Members, as well as chiefs of staff, policy directors, and communications directors in the top four leadership offices of each political party, and staff directors assigned to full committees.

According to the report, people of color account for just 13.7 percent of all top House staff.

Of the 329 personal offices of white Members, only sixteen are led by chiefs of staff of color.

Nearly three-quarters of U.S. House Members (313 Members) have no top staff of color, while over a quarter of the U.S. House (114 Members) do not have any top staff of color even though they represent districts that are over 33 percent people of color, the report said.

While Democratic Congressional Hispanic Caucus Members, on average, have districts that are 61 percent Latina/o, collectively they have personal office top staff that is less than 28 percent Latina/o, according to the report. Collectively, Members of the Republican Congressional Hispanic Conference are slightly more likely to have top Latina/o staff — just over 29 percent.

Columbia University CelebratesHispanic Heritage Month

Growing up in Mexico City, Aliza Nisenbaum knew she wanted to make a difference in the world. She contemplated becoming a psychologist, but wrestled with her deeper desire to become an artist who addresses issues of social justice. Art won out. Now a professor at Columbia School of the Arts, Nisenbaum is making the impact she long sought. From 2012 to 2016, she painted portraits of undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America, whom she met at Immigrant Movement International, a community space in Queens. As a volunteer teacher there, Nisenbaum developed friendships with her students, who shared stories of how they came to the United States. Eventually, she asked to paint their portraits. “I was always interested in how ethics comes into painting, and about the politics of visibility—how people are usually seen or depicted, and I was trying to show another side of that,” said Nisenbaum. “It’s very intimate, like painting as documentary.” Nisenbaum brings this deep spirit of engagement to her teaching at Columbia. “Teaching art is not a straight line. You have to give of yourself and be sincere,” said Nisenbaum. “It’s mostly about the students. But they also want professional advice, and they ask questions about your own life as an artist and about how to belong to a meaningful community once they graduate.”

“The church is really a joy.”Fr. Nicolas Kazarian gazed upon the

vibrant murals, bright gold wall decorations, and gleaming chandeliers that comprise the interior of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church as he spoke on a recent afternoon.

“It’s one of the most beautiful Greek Orthodox churches in New York, and I would say, in America,” remarked Kazarian, Parish Priest of St. Spyridon, located at 124 Wadsworth Avenue near 179th Street.

The church’s patron saint was the bishop of Tremithus in Cyprus. He was considered one of the most miraculous saints of the Greek Orthodox Church, and was often referred to as “The Wonderworker.”

Now the local institution of worship and its members have fresh wonders to celebrate.

Built in 1952, the building recently underwent an extensive restoration project that took more than two years to complete.

St. Spyridon’s Parish Council spearheaded an effort to restore the church’s interior meticulously, including the historic frescos, in

its original Byzantine style. An iconographer was hired to resuscitate murals soiled by decades of dust and candle smoke, while walls and windows that had languished in disrepair were fixed.

Lydia Vagelos-Callimanis, President of the Parish Council, said the renovations were long overdue, as parishioners had been vexed by water leaks and crumbling plaster.

“You’d sit in the pews and it would be crumbling, the frescos over your head,” she said. “Since the 1980’s, there was really no maintenance whatsoever.”

Now, the church has been brought back to

its former glory, with every effort made to adhere to in the workmanship and style of the original artwork.

The iconographer and his crew were required to work on scaffolding 75 feet high to complete restoration of the church’s dome interior.

Renovations began in March 2016 and finished in June of this year, with money raised by donations from parishioners and alumni.

The council declined to cite specific renovation costs or totals raised.

“We took a different approach to fundraising. We made a brochure and had

people donate money to restore specific icons, so it could have more personal meaning for them. The restoration took a lot of people working together but we did it,” said Vagelos-Callimanis, who is the great-niece of one of St. Spyridon’s founders.

“I basically grew up here,” she said. “It means a lot to see it looking now the way it did when I was a child.”

“You saw with the restoration, how people will put all their hearts, all their money, all their effort into making this a special church,” added Kazarian. “This is the legacy that we’re trying to safeguard and protect here.”

That legacy had fallen upon dark times in recent years, as St. Spyridon’s former priest was removed by Archdiocese in 2015 due to an extramarital affair. Around that time, the church’s finances were in also in ruin due to mismanagement.

Mahfuzur Rahman was the youngest member of his community board in 2015.

Today he’s Vice President of East Harlem’s Taft Houses Resident Association. He’s also one of the latest recipients of the Resident Scholarship program administered jointly by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and the City University of New York (CUNY).

Twenty-three CUNY students residing in NYCHA housing received $1,000 scholarships at a ceremony at the Borough of Manhattan Community College on Tues., Sept. 18th. The funds are for education-related expenses, including tuition, books and fees. More than 170 NYCHA residents have benefitted from this program since 2005.

Rahman, 20, is a City College student. He said the scholarship is important for NYCHA residents, “because [though] you could not have gone away for college, but you also feel satisfied that you have a place in New York, you have a place in your community, and that your community is going to support you, even in your educational endeavors.”

This year, the program has grown to include even more scholarships, including the Levine Family Scholarship, which is funded by former NYCHA resident and CUNY graduate Jeffrey Levine; the Regina A. Figueroa Memorial Scholarship for residents with disabilities, which is named for a NYCHA employee who passed away and is funded by a current NYCHA employee; and the Kofi Hormeku Scholarship provided

by Nehemiah Economic Development, Inc., for residents living in Brownsville, East New York, or Ocean Hill, Brooklyn.

“The recipients of the NYCHA-CUNY scholarships are residents who represent the future of their communities,” said NYCHA Interim Chair and CEO Stanley Brezenoff. “We’re proud to continue our collaboration with CUNY and are honored to be a part of our residents’ path toward professional and personal success.”

The NYCHA-CUNY Resident Scholarship Program offers four distinct scholarships each worth $1000. All scholarships require that the applicant be currently a NYCHA public housing resident; be currently enrolled as an undergraduate at CUNY; has to have earned 30 or more credits; and has to have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

a social worker. She was awarded the Regina A. Figueroa Scholarship for her commitment to young people in need. “When I was worried about being evicted and homeless, I wasn’t doing well in school,” Chung said. “I’m so grateful to have NYCHA and I’m happy they provide these resources to New Yorkers that need them.”

This year CaSpanish has been nominated as a finalist in the 14th Annual Vendy Awards in the “Best Market” category.

The annual street food competition has been called “the red carpet gala for New York’s pushcart heroes” and was created in 2005 by The Street Vendor Project (SVP) as a fundraiser to spotlight the best in the city’s food trucks, carts and sidewalk stands and celebrate the diverse ways to dine on the street. SVP is a membership-based

project with nearly 2,000 members who work to protect and sustain vendors’ rights and also provides legal and small business services.

“Truly an honor. We’re so excited to be nominated as a finalist for the Vendys,” the couple wrote on their website. “Best Market…you better believe it. Our scrumptious curried goat and savory codfish cakes are the talk of the town!”

CaSpanish is Spanish cuisine with a “Trini twist.” Judy is Puerto Rican and Dominican and Keith is Trinidadian

American. Typical menu items include pernil, pastelón and mofongo. Jerk pork with rice and peas is served with lime cilantro slaw. Crab grits with garlic shrimp and codfish cakes hit the spot.

Handmade roti stuffed with curry chicken or shrimp goes fast. “Roti Day never disappoints,” according to Facebook posts. “Rasta Pasta” is another favorite, heaped with grilled, curried or jerk shrimp or chicken.

Two kids grow up in the same home or same neighborhood. How is it that only one develops major depression? One kid grows up exposed to violence the other not. Who is more prone to anxiety? Poverty? Loss? Education? What do such circumstances and experiences mean for risk of mental illness? These are the kinds of questions that longitudinal studies attempt to answer. And that was Dr. Patricia Cohen’s life work.

This summer the mental health community lost a researcher who was among the great pioneers in psychiatric epidemiology. A longtime member of the Columbia University faculty, Dr. Patricia Cohen was remembered as a scientist whose compassion and curiosity left an enduring legacy. Cohen’s life work

A Life’s Work

has come to be known as the “Children in the Community Study” and has contributed in important ways to what we know about growing up and risk for mental disorders.

This is a salute to five seminal longitudinal studies in developmental psychopathology. Observing carefully. Listening attentively. Recording thoughtfully. Each of these studies has increased our understanding of how and why some of us develop mental disorders and others not.

1. The Children in the Community Study. Times have changed, and spanking is scorned as a means of parenting among “enlightened” communities today. While this may be part

of a larger movement towards more liberal parenting styles, it was also likely informed by the Children in the Community Study that documented the relationship between parenting styles and child outcomes. Following a group of more than 800 children in upstate New York for more than 20 years, Cohen’s work showed that parenting behaviors like harsh,

physical discipline were often associated with mood problems among

kids later in life. Cohen’s work also described how important personality disorders in adolescence

were to predicting mental illness in adulthood.

2. The Great Smoky Mountains Study. Researchers at Duke University began a longitudinal study in 1992 with over a thousand children aged 9-16 and their parents in western North Carolina, both in rural and urban areas. And then something totally unexpected happened. One-quarter of the families in the study were members of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation, and a casino was built on their land. Every tribal citizen earned a share of the profits - enough to dramatically change their financial circumstances. Among the notable findings were that improved financial circumstances were associated with a decline in behavioral and emotional problems among kids. But, of course, the story of risk for mental illness is more complicated than that. Other significant findings were that psychiatric disorders tend to start early and gender matters. For example, whereas girls and boys have similar rates of depression in childhood, by about the age of 13, girls are more likely than boys to be diagnosed with depression, and the difference endures into adulthood.

3. Three-Generational Study of Major Depression. Dr. Myrna Weissman, a senior faculty member and mentor in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University, has been studying depression for decades. Beginning in 1975, Weissman and colleagues launched a study to examine how parental depression affects children - and even their children’s children. Following a cohort of 220 children over 40 years, Weissman and colleagues are among the first to show that children of depressed

The New York City Charter has not had a full-scale review in nearly 30 years.

That’s why Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, Public Advocate Tish James, and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson cosponsored legislation creating a Charter Revision Commission, which passed earlier this year. The 2019 Charter Revision Commission will review the entire City Charter and has no predetermined agenda. However, some topics on which it may focus attention could include (but are not limited to):• Land Use – the process by which

developers and city agencies submit proposals for developments and by which decisions on those proposals are made;

• Budget – the information available to the public in the city budget, and the powers given to the Mayor and City Council in developing and making changes to our city’s budget;

• Community Boards – how they are structured, how members are appointed, rules governing them, resources provided to them;

• Oversight and Accountability of Agencies – including how commissioners are appointed and approved and the independence of various city agencies.

The Commission has announced a first set of public hearings – one in each borough. You may testify in any borough. These hearings are designed to let the Commissioners know what areas of the City Charter they should focus on. In testimony, it is not necessary for you to propose solutions; identifying areas of focus is also helpful. If you think that the city’s land use, budget or contracting processes could be improved, or you have specific concerns in other areas, you should testify to that effect and give the reasons for (and illustrations of) those concerns.

The Archdiocese appointed the Parish Council to help get the church’s affairs in order.

“We felt an obligation to help resurrect St. Spyridon, because it was in such a bad shape physically, financially and spiritually,” remarked John Psaltos, who serves as the Council Treasurer.

Psaltos grew up in Washington Heights worshiping at the church and attending St. Spyridon School, a K through 8 school which once adjoined the church.

He recalled the turbulence surrounding the church just a few years ago, and the painstaking effort of fixing its finances, saying that the organization needed to rebuild from the ground up.

“It was like jumping on a merry-go-round that was spinning out of control. We just pulled together,” Psaltos said.

The decision was made to close St. Spyridon School, which was no longer profitable, and lease the space to School in the Square, a charter middle school, creating an added revenue stream for the church.

“Once we got a handle on the finances, we started thinking of ways to improve things,” stated Psaltos, who said the church is now on stable financial ground. “The framework is here for continued success.”

The lifelong connection with St. Spyridon made the church’s rejuvenation all the more rewarding for Psaltos.

“It’s good to know that something so essential to your life, your identity, is not dead,” he remarked.

Founded in 1931 at a time when Washington Heights had a substantial Greek population, St.

Spyridon has been witness to the demographic changes within the neighborhood and a lessened demand for the experience of the Orthodox church.

There are currently about 150 active families in the parish, Psaltos said, where it once numbered more than 1,000 families.

“The neighborhood is evolving,” said Kazarian, who joined St. Spyridon in 2017. “We’re trying to connect the experience of this church with the current community. We welcome everybody.”

Kazarian said he is inspired by the recent influx of new residents uptown, especially young professionals and families, and

has noticed more young people from the community connecting with St. Spyridon.

“It’s a chance for outreach,” he stated. “We have to change, we have to adapt to these new realities, but we’re very confident we’ll adapt for the better.”

St. Spyridon conducts a fall festival every November featuring food and a gift bazaar, and also hosts a Sunday school, Bible study, Girl Scouts, a youth group, and women’s philanthropic group.

A ballroom, also recently restored, is available for special events.

“We’ve tried to engage as much as we can with the community, because we are a

at its Sunday liturgy on October 14, which will feature several priests who once served at St. Spyridon, including the bishop of Boston, who began his career in St. Spyridon.

“It will bring the past, present and the future together — the past priests, the new iconography, and the hope for the future, this church community that is being rebuilt, new people coming in, and all the energy here,” said Kazarian.

A special luncheon will be held after the mass in honor of the restoration.

“People are going to be amazed when they see what the church looks like now,” Psaltos asserted. “I can’t wait to wow people.”
