Customer Overview

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) is run by the London Fire and Emergency planning Authority (LFEPA). They are part of a group of organisations operating under the 'umbrella' of the Greater London Authority (GLA). They are the third largest fire fighting organisation in the world, protecting people and property from fire within the 1587 square kilometres of Greater London which has a resident population of 7 million, which increases by another 500,000 during working hours. Business Needs

The head office of the LFB was located in 3 buildings on the Albert Embankment. The location was ideal for redevelopment, but a poor location for a world class fire service; with departments scattered across multiple buildings and in small sub offices; the ability to maintain communication and collaboration efforts were being impacted by the geography of the buildings.

How Storm Technologies Helped

Disruption had to be kept to a minimum as an impact to service provision was not an option. LFB decided the 1,200 staff had to move over three specific weekends. It had to work first time and in order to do that they needed a partner with a proven track record. Storm was already a trusted supplier who have been supplying LFB Hardware, Software, Networking and Services for over 4 years and successfully carrying out many other LFB projects. For LFB, service and flexibility is paramount. “Storm always delivers that.” Said Sally Devine, Contracts and Services Manager. Sally, who has been with LFB for over 4½ years introduced Storm as a supplier 4 years ago and has always been impressed by “…their commitment to customer service excellence”. Storm were given the job of project managing the move, disconnection, transportation, reconnection and problem management for the two days following each move.

The Solution

The decision to relocate was taken and their new home in Southwark was found. Moving is stressful, for LFB this was made even more difficult as they had been in their current home for many years and they had to ensure that the move did not impact the protection they provide to their 7m+ customers who rely upon them. Moving into their completely refitted home should have been easy, however, LFB also had to overcome problems caused by the age of many of their terminals, with which their staff are equipped with and the hardware customisations that had been carried out of the existing equipment that they operated with.

The Results “The moves were a great success and everyone in the project team were very impressed with the attitude and behaviour of the entire Storm team. They operated in such a collaborative manner that it made it a pleasure to work with them and it felt as if they were part of LFB and not a supplier.” Said Sally. “The key difference with Storm is their people. Storm had already been successful with our office moves. We knew they had the flexibility and attitude to do it even if there was scope creep and that for me was the biggest factor ... you can go to other companies and they will do what you first ask for. But when things change Storm won’t just be looking for new ways to bill you, they will be more concerned with making sure that they deliver what you want”. Mark Smith was the Storm project manager and he enjoyed working with LFB. “The move was really challenging, we were introducing new technology to the environment at the same time as we moved, and we had to be able to respond to the operational pressures that LFB faced, without impacting neither the move, nor the services that LFB had to provide.”
