Hello and thank you for your interest in Watermark University!

Your curiosity is to be commended and it may even be the key to better health. Studies show that satisfying curiosities and learning new things can keep the mind agile and sharp. That’s why we created Watermark University. We know that stimulating the mind and strengthening the body have enormous benefits at any age and may even slow the process of memory loss.

Besides being good for you, keeping your brain and the body active and engaged doesn’t just improve your life – it’s a whole lot of fun! Enroll in a class or two that pique your interest. I’m confident you’ll learn something new and make a few friends along the way. While you’re at it, why not suggest a class or even volunteer to teach a subject which you’re passionate about?

Just give us a call to reserve a space in a class that intrigues you. Please keep in mind that class space is limited, priority is given to residents and most, but not all classes are free. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in a Watermark University course this semester!

Sincerely,

Melissa Goodnow Community Life Director

COURSE FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION

Amazing Animals: Fetching with Wheels Beth Dolan September 29th 2:00pm A Not too long ago, there was a time when injured or special needs pets were "no good anymore." When an animal was hurt or for any reason no longer wanted, they were put down. Not Anymore. Our pets have become family members and, more often than not, an elderly, disabled, or injured pet can live a high quality life for many years if they get the little help that they need. Sometimes, that help comes in the form of a wheelchair. These animals learn to adapt to the use of a wheelchair and can run and play fetch just like any other. Beth from Transportation will bring in her special needs dogs, who each have their own set of wheels to meet all the residents at The Fountains. Learn all about the way assistive devices can help maximize a pet’s quality of life and spend some time with a loveable pup. America’s Fast Food Epidemic Kamron Van Donkersgoed September 20th 2:00pm A In a country where fast food rules, it’s time to face the hard reality of the Epidemic of our country’s fast food industry. We will look at the link between childhood obesity and the golden arches we all know. There has been many changes in the industry to meet the ever changing needs as our society has learned more about the importance of food and our health. We will also discuss the “good” fast food options to make healthier choices for the whole family. America Recycles: A World of Waste Kamron Van Donkersgoed November 30th 2:00pm A Everyone throws stuff away every day, from your breakfast to your dinner, and everything in-between, learn how recycling can reduce the pollution in the world and the dilemma that Pinellas county faces in 20 years from now. Also we take a look at a scary world where the world’s garbage ends up. Apiculture: The Art of Beekeeping Pinellas Bee Keepers Association September TBD A / CY To honor National Honey month, Pinellas Bee Keepers are a volunteer run organization dedicated to the preservation, assisting with the removal of bees to safe locations, and offer the community training opportunities to learn about bees and go through the hives. Join them as the present local beekeeping practices and the role it plays in our community. Apple Fest: Time for apple pie Kamron Van Donkersgoed November 25th 3:00pm LR In a little town of Bayfield Wisconsin, a 3 day festival around apples draws roughly 10,000 people to the area. Let’s look at how to make the most out of our apples and what different things can be make, other than your apple pie and dumplings. Autumn Ales Chris Wojewnik & Melissa Goodnow October 12th 2:00 pm A Fall has arrived and while you automatically change up your wardrobe and your social calendar for the season, there’s absolutely no reason you shouldn’t be changing up your beer of choice as well. While summer is a time of pale ales and citrus notes, fall answers with pumpkin-flavored brews, darker ales, and—best of all—fresh hop beers. Fall means fresh ingredients straight from the field; hops only hours off the bine, local honey, chocolate malts and savory spices. As the leaves change, so does the beer aisle. America’s craft brewers have been hard at work personifying fall’s flavors in their latest seasonal releases and we’re going to bring you a variety to sample.

Despite the massive growth of the area and St. Petersburg's popularity as a major gulf coast resort area, many of the city's significant historic sites still survive. By coaching students in the creation of dynamic characters, provocative situations and a positive, “anything can happen” atmosphere, veteran television and Broadway stage star, Stephen Alpert, will keep you on your toes and with a smile on your face. Come create some fun! “Jingle Beers” Chris Wojewnik & Melissa Goodnow December 15th 2:00 pm A Beer has always been a part of Christmas. Before Prohibition, German immigrants brewed special, dark lagers for the holiday. Before that, the English served homemade wassail (spiced ale) to Dickensian carolers. In the Middle Ages, observant monks brewed their finest, strongest beer to mark the birth of Christ. Around 900 AD, as Norwegians converted to Christianity, they brought along their smoky Viking Jul (Yule) ale. We’d argue that Christmas beer is older than Christmas itself. Whether the date is divine or not, the traditions surrounding the holidays—gift giving, feasting and, yes, beer drinking—has evolved into the celebrations of Christmas. Which is why we say Christmas beer is not a style, it’s a tradition. Everyone has a favorite craft beer of the season. Come sample a few that will jingle your bells this year. “Do not open till Christmas” should never apply to beer!

We will also recall close, nail-biting results from past Presidential elections.

Sterling University: “Give ‘em Hell Harry”: President Harry S. Truman Phil Leto October 11th 1:00pm A

When Franklin D. Roosevelt died suddenly on April 12, 1945, little known Vice-President Harry S. Truman would have the responsibility of ending a war, combating the spread of the USSR and preparing America for the return home of millions of servicemen. Although he did not possess a college degree, was a failed haberdasher and was the product of a Missouri political machine, Truman today is regarded as one of America’s greatest Presidents. Sterling University: Happy Holidays and a Look Forward

Sterling University: Hilary Clinton vs. Donald Trump: Where do the Candidates Stand?

Phil Leto October 25th 1:00pm A As we enter the home stretch of the Road to the White House, we consider where the candidates stand on important campaign issues. Domestic issues include immigration, debt and deficits, taxation and spending, gun policy, entitlement reform, health care, and energy policy. International issues include the effects of BREXIT, terrorism, ISIS, Al Qaeda and the Middle East, a recommitment to conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the challenges posed by Russia, China and North Korea.

Sterling University: Immigration Policy in a Country Built by Immigrants Phil Leto September 27th 1:00pm A

Americans are once again locked into a debate over immigration and the role of immigrants in our society. Advocates of comprehensive reform argue that immigrants, documented or otherwise, enrich the United States, provide valuable services and participate in American civic life. Others, as a matter of national security, support strict enforcement, the building of walls and greater scrutiny of those seeking to enter the country.

Sterling University: Now What? A Post-Mortem Analysis of the 2016 Presidential Election Phil Leto November 22nd 1:00pm A

The votes are counted and the winner is determined (we hope!). We examine comprehensive data compiled by the exit polling firm Edison Research to see the demographics of how and why the President-elect prevailed and his or her opponent did not. How did a voter’s age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, income, education level, region and other factors affected the outcome?

Sterling University: Terrorism: The Cold War of the 21th Century Phil Leto September 13th 1:00pm A

Fifteen years ago, the horrific events of September 11, 2001, brought international terrorism to America’s shores: foreign nationals trained, supported and directed from abroad, and an American response that led to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The recent attacks in San Bernardino and Orlando have revealed a more pernicious type of terrorist: the native born, home-grown, lone wolf, “inspired” and radicalized by Jihadist rhetoric freely broadcast via the internet throughout the world.

Sterling University: Toward a “More Perfect Union” Phil Leto December 13th 1:00pm A

We look to the challenges of maintaining the “more perfect Union” referred to in the Preamble to the Constitution. The recent Presidential campaign has shown the extent of the deep ideological divide and partisan rift in our population which has paralyzed Congress’ ability to legislate and empowered regulators, bureaucracies, States and the President to test the Constitutional limits of their powers. How can institutions be restored to their proper role and government be balanced and controlled?
