Adapted from the hit 1956 film starring screen legends Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra, High Society fizzes with a host of beautiful ballads including True Love, You’re Sensational and the un-forgettable Well, Did You Evah! This uplifting, sparkling show proves Porter’s classic musical style and effervescent wit will never go out of fashion.

In a fur-ther twist, charming reporter Mike Connor, sent to cover the wedding, falls instantly for Tra-cy, and she for him. As the nup-tials draw closer, Tracy must choose between her three very different suitors.

The role of Haven, played by Bing Crosby in the movie, is taken by Michael Praed, star of Robin of Sherwood and The Secret Adventures of Jules Ver-

WED 3 - SAT 6 APRKnown to all as ‘Piaf’, the spar-row who rose from the streets of Paris to the international stage, French chanteuse Edith Gassion’s life and career is as unique as her extraordinary singing voice.

Her music, a reflection of her life itself, passionately retells the love, loss and sorrow she experienced, and the fierce emotion and heartache she endured until her untimely death 50 years ago. The show features Piaf’s greatest songs, such as La Vie en Rose, Hymne à l’amour and Non Je Ne Regrette Rien.

Following her acclaimed performance in Curve’s 2012 autumn season production of Entertaining Mr Sloane, Julia Hills will be joining the cast of Piaf and will play the role of Toine.

FRI 19 APRIL - SAT 11 MAYRoyal & Derngate’s Made In Northampton season continues with the third of its Comedy Gold productions, when Shake-speare’s best-loved comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream takes to the Royal stage, from Friday 19 April to Saturday 11 May.

Perfect both as an introduc-tion to Shakespeare and for sea-soned Shakespeare audiences, A Midsummer Night’s Dream offers a feast of humour and magic. This new production sets the action in Edwardian England, but mischief is afoot and the usual divides of upstairs/down-stairs have been turned upside down. Under the thrilling and en-ergetic direction of Gary Sefton (who directed A Christmas Carol, Diary Of A Nobody and Travels With My Aunt for North-ampton’s Royal & Derngate) the winning combination of Shake-speare’s lyrical text and some of his funniest characters make this rich, vivid production a real treat for all ages.

FRI 12 - SAT 27 APRAcclaimed for its epic, nostalgic, funny story and rousing, romantic, award-winning score, The Hired Man is arguably the finest new British musical of the last thirty years.

Set against the backdrop of the Cumbrian lakes in the early years of the twentieth century, it tells the timeless, moving story of a young married couple and their struggle to carve a living from the land, just as the traditional rhythms of English country life are being swept away by the gathering storm of war in Europe. It’s haunting, thrilling, stirring stuff.

The Hired Man is based on the much-loved novel by Melvyn Bragg, and brought to life by

the heartbreakingly-beautiful music of Howard Goodall, the EMMY, BRIT and BAFTA award-winning composer of stage musicals. Goodall’s credits including the recent West End hit Love Story, and film and TV scores including themes for Blackadder, The Vicar of Dibley, Mr Bean and QI.

pril sees the return of Ceri Dupree to Leicester’s Curve in a sensational production of Hot Stuff. WOW were

lucky enough to get this exclusive interview.

Who did you most want to be when you were growing up?

My early inspiration was Danny La Rue when I saw him on television. I always loved the more flamboyant characters in show business such as Boy George and Liberace, the show men as it were, but Danny Lar Rue was my greatest influence.

What was your inspiration for wanting to get into showbiz, living at home in Swansea?

As a kid my inspiration was my father, he was an entertainer and cabaret singer. When I was growing up in Swansea there was a comedian called Ryan Davies, who wasn’t very well known outside of Wales, but was a household name here. My father new him and we used to see him in pantomime every year in what was then my local theatre in my home town of Swansea, the Grand Theatre. That gave me the inspiration to become a performer.

When was the first time you appeared on stage?

The first time I ever went on stage was when I was probably about 14 and it was at a school concert. The majority of people played the violin or recorder, sang a song or recited poetry but I got up and did an impression of Mrs Thatcher. I didn’t dress up as her, but had a wig and a handbag and it went down rather well.

And when did you first appear in drag?

When I was in school, we did a pantomime and I played one of the ugly sisters – I must have been around 15, I think.

WOW’s Derek Hammond heads to the Curve and gains and audience with the UK’s Queen of Theatre, the outrageous Ceri Dupree.

WOW Issue 52 7

How come it’s usually women who get to have most of the fun when it comes to dressing up, making up and glamorously transforming themselves?

It’s because they are women. If you look at the Oscars for instance or any red carpet events, what do the men wear? They wear black suits, black ties – there’s only so much you can do with on a variation of that. A man could wear a black sequined dickie bow or sequined suit – but it’s basically black and white. It’s the women that have all the colour. Women wear makeup, shoes, the glitzy dresses, the jewellery and obviously they have the best deal. It’s as simple as that really.

You’ve performed all over the world and at some fabulously glam venues, but when did you first get the vibe that you were on the road to success?

I don’t think you ever get that vibe that you are on the road to success. I think the more shows you do, the better you get and you start to think ‘I can do this’. I would never have been so conceited to say that 20 odd years ago, but after 30 years I can say yes I know what I’m doing when it comes to female impersonation and I’ve done my apprenticeship – so I think I can say that now.

You clearly love the old-school Hollywood stars and stage divas – Marilyn, Cher, Shirley Bassey... even the Queen – but who are the more modern stars you’ve deemed worthy of joining your repertoire?

Lady Gaga for obvious reasons, she’s a prime target for sending up because she is a complete parody of herself anyway, so she is great. I’ve also started working on Adele, although - dare I say it - she’s a little boring, but I do quite like her. Another new character is the woman from Dragon’s Den, Hilary Devey – she’s fantastic. She’s quite outrageous as a character, flamboyant with big shoulder pads, so I’m working on her as well. And I suppose Amy Winehouse is another.

What do you think has set you apart from the rest of the so-called ‘drag scene’?

It’s my life, I work at it 24 hours and I don’t ever switch off - I love it. I never do it in a misogynistic way, I don’t ever degrade women. I do sail near the wind, it’s not Mother Theresa, but it’s not cheap and tacky either. I like to think I do it in a classy, upmarket, professional way. I work at what I do constantly, 365 days a year and never take my eye off the ball, always striving to get things right. I’ve never missed a performance in 30 years, I’m never late and I beat myself up over it.

What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a costume? And was it, by any chance, for your favourite of all the women you impersonate?

What’s the most I’ve spent? Some of my pantomime costumes can cost a fortune, the finale costumes in particular. I think the most recent one was about £5,000 this year, it was red and a hell of a lot of feathers. We’re just having a costume made now, the feathers alone have cost £850, so when it is done it will be in the thousands. I’ve never spent more than £7,000 on a costume, but sometimes they can cost as little as £350 – it depends on the character and what materials you are putting on it. The most expensive one in Hot Stuff is probably be the Dolly Parton one which is encrusted in Swarovski crystals. Only today I had a delivery of orange feathers– you cannot get into my dining room now, it’s like an explosion on an ostrich farm!

You were last in Leicester as the star of Hot Stuff, which went down a storm, and the Leicester Mercury has described your show as “Slick and saucy, rude and risque, fun and fantastic.” We’re looking forward to seeing you again!

Thank you very much! I agree whole heartedly.

What would you do if you were invisible for a day?

I know what I would like to say but you probably can’t print that. It would probably involve a trip to the rugby! I don’t really know, probably go around to all these banks, the offices of the rich bankers and kick the feet from under them! All of those that got us in this mess. That’s what I would love to do.

Madness frontman Suggs brings his hilarious and mov-ing one man tour de force My Life Story to The Core at Corby Cube on Wednesday 24 April.

As he turns fifty, a loud crash in the singer’s bathroom heralds the sudden death of his beloved cat. This tragedy pro-pels him on a reflective journey through his own highs and lows, and triggers a personal quest to discover what happened to the father he never knew. Accom-panied by a lone pianist, Suggs combines narrative, anecdote and song to reveal his life story in an uproarious – and at times

deeply affecting – stand-up memoir.

He recalls his tough child-hood on the mean streets of Soho in the days of platform boots, tank tops, cheesecloth and big hair; his sudden fame at the age of eighteen as lead singer of Madness and the sud-den collapse of the band just a few years later. With a wife and two small children to support he determines to rebuild his career through music production, solo albums, televi-sion, theatre, film and radio – despite numer-ous hilarious set-backs. SUNDAY 28TH APRILFormed on Canvey Island in Es-sex in the early 1970s Dr Feel-good remains one of the most popular and exciting live rhythm and blues acts in the world.

The raw and uncompromis-ing style of their performance resulted in the album Stupidity that immediately went to the number one position in the U.K. charts.

Dr. Feelgood have also en-joyed global success with a string of hit singles including Roxette, Back in the Night, Milk and Alcohol, Down at the Doc-tors, She Does it Right, Going Back Home and See You Later Alligator - which gave the group their first gold record.

The current line up features the rhythm section Kevin Mor-ris on drums and Phil Mitchell

FRI 26 – MON 29 APRILTrance is the much-anticipated thriller from Danny Boyle, director of Trainspotting and the Academy-Award-winning Slumdog Millionaire. Simon (McAvoy) is an art auctioneer who gets caught up in a major heist: the only problem is, having been hit on the head, he can’t remember where the stolen painting is. Trying to retrieve the information by using a hypnotherapist (Dawson), little does he realise she is being used by a criminal gang to lead them to the art. A high-octane, genre-bending thrill ride, Trance harnesses the immersive, hypnotic power of film to explore ideas of identity, perception and madness.

Let’s Dance

MONDAY 29 APRIL - SATURDAY 25 MAYWelcome, year three and Let’s Dance International Fes-tival (LDIF) is going from strength to strength, bringing the best in international dance that reflects the cos-mopolitan nature of Leicester. This year’s LDIF cele-brates International Day of Dance with a programme from Guadeloupe, Iran, India, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Turkey, UK and Brazil; where the artists have focused on traditional styles and updated them to reflect contemporary culture by marrying ba-

sic structures, identity and dance styles. This year LDIF has introduced a new strand with Se-

rious About Dance: A Black British Dance Think Tank that looks at dance practice, unpacking the history of British Black

dance. It unearths a hidden political history, a new dance aesthetic which had a place here and abroad, the role of race and identity and a vision for the future as the cultural landscape economically challenges the arts infrastructure. Speakers for the conference include Hilary Carty, Paul Gilroy, Bob Ramdhanie, Kenneth Olumuyiwa Tharp OBE and Sue Harrison, all engaged in a dialogue that sits alongside work which illustrates the diversity to be found in Black dance today.

LDIF brings some of the best of British dance with Jean Abreu’s intimate new solo work BLOOD followed by Oguike Dance, led by one of the UK’s most inventive choreographers Henri Oquike, presenting V4: Seasons, a programme of three works, drawn from the evoca-tive world of baroque music, with its characteristic theatricality and rhythmic energies. The six dancers bring to life Vivaldi’s seasons, contrasting with the pure vocal lines in Stabat Mater, and ending with a reworking of Oguike’s clever and inventive “White Space”, a dance version which even Scarlatti himself could not imagine bettered!

Zumbi, based on Zumbi Dos Palmares (the greatest Brazilian slave leader), will set your heart racing and imagination flowing with this magical dance piece. A mix of Brazilian cultures charged with an African undercurrent, they use dance, music, aerial skills, circus technique, capoeira and contemporary art in a spectacular explosion of energy and talent! LDIF brings three weeks of energy, fun and international performances of quality to Leicester with artists from around the world. This year we launch on 29 April with a dance party, Roc Kidz Crew, Stix, DJ Kayper and Akala, so instead of just sitting back and watching, get up and Let’s Dance!

Matthew Bourne’s SLEEPING BEAUTY sees the choreog-rapher return to the music of Tchaikovsky to complete the trio of the composer’s ballet master-works that started in 1992 with Nutcracker! and, most famously, in 1995, with the international hit Swan Lake.

Perrault’s timeless fairy tale, about a young girl cursed to sleep for one hundred years, was turned into a legendary ballet by Tchaikovsky and choreographer, Marius Petipa, in 1890. Bourne takes this date as his starting point, setting the Christening of Aurora, the story’s heroine, in the year of the ballet’s first per-formance; the height of the Fin-de-Siecle period when fairies, vampires and decadent opulence fed the gothic imagination. As Au-rora grows into a young woman,

WOW LOOKS AT WHAT’S GOING ON...

SUNDAY 28 APRILThe point-to-point race season at Dingley continues with the Fernie meeting on Sunday 28th April, by when we all hope that the Spring sunshine will have replaced the endless winter rains!

Dingley are delighted to welcome back the Fitzwilliam (Milton) Hunt for a second season, to host their point-to-point at the track on Saturday 18th May. Plans are already at an advanced stage for this day, and the lure of a well-supported East Anglian area fixture at a Midlands Area course will again bring a large contingent of both equine and human followers from further afield to experience the unique atmosphere that racing at Dingley can generate in its

A Day at the Races

natural amphitheatre setting.A number of further

investments have been made to the racing and viewing facilities at the course in the last year or so to ensure that runners, riders and their connections can benefit from improved racing conditions and some of the best facilities in amateur racing. The renovation of the principal ‘Rod Millington’ racecourse building is now complete, with improved jockeys changing rooms, toilets and washing facilities; together with a refurbished medical room. Externally the work to the winners enclosure is now complete, which provides considerably more space and improved viewing facilities. The first fence has been completely rebuilt, and a number of other fences have been refurbished which,

when combined with the 2012 alterations to the on-course watering arrangements, will help to ensure that Dingley is able to provide some of the very best facilities and racing conditions of any course in the country for the runners at all three meetings throughout the season. Specialist work is also planned for the turf to ensure optimum conditions.

Philip Cowen, one of the organisers at Dingley, remarked “We are delighted that the Fitzwilliam are remaining at Dingley in 2013 and 2014, and their decision reflects the substantial investments which we have made in improving all of the facilities at Dingley in recent seasons. Our new website and much-improved winners enclosure are the latest in a long line of changes in the last

few years, which have all been designed for the benefit of both spectators and the equestrian stars of the sport.

We look forward to welcoming runners from the Midlands, Eastern and Yorkshire circuits throughout the season, with the Fitzwilliam meeting adding an exciting occasion as a finale”.

The setting at Dingley is almost unrivalled in the Country, with the racecourse laid-out in the natural bowl at the foot of the car parks to provide the very best viewing of virtually any racetrack in the Country.

FROM SATURDAY 20 APRILIn Stitches, a new costume exhibition at the Royal Shake-speare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, will celebrate and share the fascinating costume making skills of the Company.

Visitors will have an exclu-sive chance to see rarely dis-played costumes from RSC productions produced over the last 60 years. The 35 hand-crafted costumes were all made in Stratford and worn by some of the country’s best loved actors including Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Ian McKel-len, Antony Sher, Juliet Steven-son, Patrick Stewart and David Tennant, , amongst others.

Costumes from the RSC’s unique Collection and Cos-tume Store, which houses over 30,000 items, will be on display in the theatre’s PAC-CAR Room as part of Into the Wild, the first part of the ex-hibition, which opens on Sat-urday 20th April to coincide with Stratford’s Shakespeare Birthday celebrations. It will also show how designers and makers through the years have responded to themes of nature in Shakespeare’s work such as David Tennant’s cos-tume from the 1996 As You Like It and Judi Dench’s 1976 costume from The Comedy of Errors, which incorporates a beautiful butterfly motif.

Every costume illustrates the skills and craftsmanship that go into each piece, such as tailoring, dyeing, printing, leatherwork, beading, cor-setry, millinery, mask-making and jewellery making. All of these skills, plus new tech-niques developed in response to contemporary fabrics and designs, are used on a daily

In Stitches

basis in the RSC’s Costume Department in Stratford.

Alistair McArthur, RSC Head of Costume, said,

‘We know from our theatre tours and open days that peo-ple love to know how we create our costumes. From the indus-trial strength magnets we use for quick changes, to the tech-niques used to distress fabric, boots and shoes, people often imagine that costumes are held together with a bulldog clip, but nothing is further from the truth. All of our costumes are made exceptionally well as they can be on stage day after day for well over 100 perform-ances. The skill and expertise that goes into making them is extraordinary and it’s wonder-ful that we can share these skills through In Stitches.’

IDEAS TO MAKE YOUR HOME A WOW HOME.

Busy times ahead...

It’s been a long wait, but at last there are positive signs that spring has sprung – or is at least in the process of springing! It’s time to throw open your windows and let in some fresh air, and to venture out into the garden for the first time in months. There’s no excuse for putting it off any longer – now is the time to spring clean and spruce up your interiors, to get planting and improving your garden in preparation for a fabulous summer!

There’s nothing like the smell of freshly mown grass to signal the start of barbecue season, and no finer feelgood improvement to your home or garden than a lush green lawn. Established 15 years in Market Harborough, Diamond Mowers have recently expanded into a highly recommended garden centre, now stocking not only turf and lawn seeds, mowers and garden tools but also flower seeds and bird tables, hanging baskets and composts.

the fireplace for months, there’s finally now a chance to sit back and take stock of your interior spaces – and the most common ‘legacy’ element in any home is the centrepiece fireplace itself. If you’re thinking of finally doing away with a feature last revamped in the 70s or 80s, one option is a new fireplace in natural stone, slate or granite to add some natural warmth to your living space. Harborough Stone offer an extensive range of fireplaces, and will even create a fireplace to your own design and specification.

Another recommended method of creating an entirely fresh feeling in your living room is brilliantly effective, and represents outstanding value for money in its impact. Did you know it’s possible to have your removable sofa covers and suitable soft furnishings professionally dyed to a shade of your own choice?

Great news if you’re thinking of changing your colour schemes or if your covers are just faded and in need of a facelift. Established in the 1990s, Blue Mill dye house in Leicester can perfectly match your covers to a colour sample.

Given the chance to start afresh this springtime, who can honestly say they would design their kitchen layout exactly as it is now? And what about that tired, temporary-feeling conservatory? David Ronald specialises in creating beautiful

Car of the Year 2013

The vote for “Car of the Year” is one of the oldest and most renowned in Europe. The best new cars have been given prizes annually since 1964. The panel of judges, consisting of 58 automotive journalists from 22 countries, had nominated eight candidates beforehand that would enter the final run. They were tested and compared and evaluated during the last few

months under a broad range of criteria, such as fuel efficiency, comfort, safety, driving properties, functionality, design and technological progress. In the 50th round of the traditional competition, the new Golf came out on top before its seven competitors, garnering a total score of 414 in the final vote – the one in second place lagged behind with a score of 212

less. Two Volkswagen models have received the coveted prize before: the Golf in 1992 and the Polo in 2010.

The most successful car in Europe has been further perfected in its seventh generation. The new Golf scored high not only with its quality, comfort, low fuel consumption and emission values as well as its excellent drive properties but also in the most vital area of safety. The best example for it is the standard Automatic Post-Collision Braking System that slows the vehicle down automatically after a bad accident so as to reduce the

remaining kinetic energy, thus avoiding more subsequent collisions. Numerous safety and assist systems have been added, such as the standard electronic XDS differential lock, the preventive passenger protection system and the Lane Assist. Together, they offer a maximum of safety and comfort at an affordable price. The top result in the “Car of the Year” competition was preceded by numerous awards at home and abroad: “Best cars of 2013,” “Auto Trophy 2012,” “Auto der Vernunft (Car of Reason)” and the British “Top Gear – All the car you’ll ever need” Award.
