TUe 8 - SAT 1 MAy2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the cult classic movie What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? Telling the story behind the film, Anton Burge’s new play Bette And Joan, starring renowned actresses Anita Dobson and Greta Scacchi, comes to Royal & Derngate from Tuesday 8 to Saturday 12 May.

After the overwhelming success of the production in London’s West End, Anita Dobson (recently seen in BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing) and Greta Scacchi (fresh from appearing on stage in David Williamson’s new play, Nothing Personal, in Sydney, Australia) reprise their roles in this national tour of Bette And Joan.

Legendary Hollywood divas Bette Davis and Joan Crawford only worked together once, on the gothic horror What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? However, such was the explosive nature of the film and the stories surrounding the making of it, plus the critical and public reaction, that fifty years later, the picture is now regarded as a cult masterpiece – one that continues to fascinate, not only for what went on in front of the camera, but also behind it.

Set over the course of a

Bette And Joan

single day, during the ‘Baby Jane’ shoot, Bette And Joan chronicles what happens to the two actresses as they prepare to face the cameras and, ultimately, each other, and what goes on when the cameras stop.

It is a play that deals with celebrity and ego, exploring how Hollywood deals with age and women, and shows the two superstars at not only their most courageous but also most vulnerable, as they weigh up the battle of what is the greater – art or stardom? Part monologue, part dialogue, the

Isy’s musical comedy has been compared to Victoria Wood and John Hegley but she very much carves her own furrow of funny, leftfield, sometimes haunting and moving songs. Her characters are finely constructed – sometimes naturalistic, sometimes fantastical – as she weaves together stand up, music and characters.

Tue 1 - SaT 5 MayOne of the most popular dance productions ever staged in the UK, Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker! returns to the Theatre Royal to celebrate its 20th anniversary .

This delicious theatrical feast has family-sized helpings of Matthew Bourne’s trademark wit, pathos and magical fantasy. Nutcracker! follows Clara’s bittersweet journey from a hilariously bleak Christmas Eve at Dr. Dross’ Orphanage, through a shimmering, ice-skating winter wonderland

to the scrumptious candy kingdom of Sweetieland.

Tchaikovsky’s glorious score and Anthony Ward’s unforgettable sets and costumes combine with sizzling choreography to create a fresh and charmingly irreverent interpretation of the traditional favourite.

Tue 29 & Wed 30 MayAs part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of his dance com-pany New Adventures, Britain’s favourite choreographer Mat-thew Bourne presents a triple bill of the acclaimed early works that launched his career.

Best known now for lavish large scale works such Nut-cracker!, Bourne is revisiting Spitfire, Town and Country and The Infernal Galop in this triple bill, three of the early works that cemented his reputation for wit, style and sheer enter-tainment.

Spitfire was Bourne’s first hit in 1988. Both a celebration of masculine vanity and an affectionate comment on the preening grandeur of the classical male dancer.

notions of national character from a bygone era through the evocative music of Edward Elgar, Noel Coward and Percy Grainger.

The Infernal Galop was in-spired by icons of France in the 1930s and 1940s such as Edith Piaf, Tino Rossi and Jacques Tati. This is France as seen by the up-tight English imagination.

tines, gravity-defying moves and feather-light footwork.

Set in a late night bar in downtown Buenos Aires and featuring some of the finest tango dancers in the world and live music, Midnight Tango, takes you on a journey into a heart of this intoxicating city. As danger and excitement, joy and jealousy, pain and passion all combine – this is a spectacular and explosive evening not to be missed!

MAKE SURE YOU’RE BEAUTY, NOT THE BEAST...

Getting down to earth

If you have any beauty questions you would like to ask our expert, please write to: Kara @ Beauty Manor, C/O WOW, 50 St. Mary’s Road, Market Harborough, LE16 7DU.

We are pleased to announce we are launching the BareMineral Skincare Range this month.

Launched back in September by bareMinerals this exciting

new range contains Rare Mineral Active Soil Complex, which is made of 72 minerals that have a positive effect on the negativity of our skin, giving your skin brighter, younger, clearer, smoother, softer and smaller pores, up to 8 weeks.

Helping to fight free radicals and protect our skin from environmental damage this skincare has very powerful anti oxidants to fight the damage. 90% of ageing is caused by the environmental damage, which

leaves 10% for natural ageing. So this is perfect to prevent ageing as it fights and protects our skin in every way.

One particular product that caught my eye is the Pure Transformation Night Treatment, which is a powder that is applied on top of your night cream. With the product being a powder this is minerals in it’s purest form. 88% in 8 weeks sees a collagen increase, 35% increase in skin cell turnover and 32% reduction in the diameter of pores.

READY is the new launch this month from bareMinerals. Having always created loose

powered make up, READY is the compact make up still mineral! The make up is not compromised in anyway there are no talc or fillers in them to make them compact. It contains SeaNutritive Complex which is minerals from the sea.

ART AND CULTURE NEAR YOU...

Myths and Legends

Myths and legends have inspired artists at many points in time. Renaissance painters were fascinated by the classical world and often chose their subjects from the Greek and Roman myths, whilst the Pre- Raphaelites were intrigued by the Arthurian legends, as can be seen in Edward Burne Jones’ drawing ‘Sir Lancelot at the Chapel of the Holy Grail’, included in this exhibition.

The exhibition also includes some of the museum’s fine

collection of Italian masters such as Antonio Molinari who painted the turbulent and emotion filled ‘The Abduction of Helen’. The work of Luca Giordano and Francesco Bassano II can also be seen.

The Gardens of Adonis by John Reinhard Weguelin continues the tradition of Greek myths as inspiration into the 20th century as it shows the followers of Adonis casting plants into the sea.

Other European myths

The exhibition is at NOrthaMptON MuseuM aNdart GaLLery, Guildhall Road, Northampton NN1 3RF, opening hours are 10am-5pm Tuesday to Saturday and 2pm-5pm on Sundays. Entry is free.

feature also such as the Pied Piper of Hamelin, the Dun Cow and the Cheval Mallet, a French story about an evil horse that abducts unwary travellers this is represented by ‘Horse and Rider V’ by Dame Elisabeth Frink’.

Traditional Japanese and Chinese stories also take centre stage in this exhibition with the exquisite ivory dragon sculpture used to illustrate the stories of Ryujin the legendary dragon god of the sea and beautiful Japanese guardian lions.

Many more stories are told in this exhibition through the museum’s collection so come along and enjoy some tales you may know and discover some you may not.

Sunday 3rd June The whole nation has been counting down to the Diamond Jubilee celebration, which sees Queen Elizabeth II reach her 60th year on the throne.

The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. This year The Big Lunch is part of the official programme of events supported by Buckingham Palace over the long weekend in June to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Big Jubilee Lunch will take place on Sunday 3rd June 2012.

Big Lunches can be big or small and take place in the street,

WOW BUSINESS... SPONSORED BY

There are various changes to both of these areas but they are very specific to individuals so will not affect the majority. We advise on individual cases where they arise.

To provide a more competitive Corporate Tax system in the UK, the main rate of Corporation

Tax will be reduced for the financial year beginning 1 April 2012 from 26% to 24%. The main rate of Corporation Tax will be further reduced to 23% from April 2013, and to 22% from April 2014. As a result, the UK will have the lowest main corporation tax rate in the G7 and the fourth lowest in the G20. We await next year’s budget for any supportive measures to be introduced for smaller companies.

As announced last year, from 1 April 2012 the rate of tax credits for small/medium enterprises will increase from 200% to 225%. The limit of the SME payment credit PAYE liability will be removed and the removal of the minimum limit of £10000 of expenditure will mean more companies will be

eligible for this valuable relief. There will be further

incentives announced for the creative sector which is mainly electronic and video gaming industries.

Businesses obtain tax relief on their purchases of plant and machinery, long-life assets and integral features using Annual Investment or Written Down Allowances. The AIA is to be reduced to £25,000 from £100,000 and the Written Down Allowance to 18% from 20% and the special rate from 10% to 8% with effect from 1 April 2012 for companies and 6 April 2012 for unincorporated businesses. This is a loss of a hugely valuable relief.

From 2013 the government will extend the 100% FYA for businesses purchasing low emission cars for a further 2 years to 31 March 2015. The CO2 threshold will be reduced from 110 to 95 and business lease cars will no longer be eligible. A hugely valuable relief being further restricted.

An incentive provided by HMRC to renovate derelict or unused properties and bring them back into use. BPRA gives an

initial allowance of 100% for expenditure on converting or renovating .This scheme will be extended for a further 5 years.

The Government will consult on introducing a voluntary simplified cash basis of accounting for unincorporated businesses up to the VAT registration threshold. It will also consult on a simplified expenses system for business use of cars, motorcycles and use of a home as an office. Finally, the Government will also consult on proposals to introduce a disincorporation relief. The consultation will look at the potential demand for such a relief as well as the practicalities of how it would work.

The VAT registration and deregistration thresholds will be changed. The taxable turnover threshold, which determines whether a person must be registered for VAT, will be increased from £73,000 to £77,000.

A major change announced will be that all building materials and construction services supplied in the course of an approved alteration to a listed

building will become subject to VAT. This will affect many individuals in our area.

In the area of closing anomalies other changes will be made which will undoubtedly increase the amount of VAT collected. These include VAT being extended to the use of self storage to align with other forms of storage; application of VAT to hairdressers chairs; static holiday caravans; and further hot foods because most hot food is subject to VAT.

WOW TAKES A LOOK AT THE LATEST DEALS ON WHEELS

Par excellence

What A decent car. Okay, the overly long handbrake is clumsy and there are a few squeaks from the dashboard plastics, but in every other respect this executive car from France is excellent.

Looks-wise, the 508 is a handsome saloon, no doubt about it. The stylish exterior de-

sign is elegant and full of ‘French chic’, equally at home in Paris or London. The car has a solidity that reflects the aspirations of sophistication, robustness and high quality. At the front, the 508 illustrates the development of the marque’s latest stylistic codes, with a single grille rendered in a ‘floating’ style and piercing head-

lamps with LED tubes visible both by day and by night. Similarly, at the rear, three red ‘claws’ mask three rows of LEDs.

The interior of the car com-bines hi-tech with the use of high quality materials. Excep-tional room, a very generous boot, and good standard speci-fication provide interior comfort

and convenience of a very high level. The simple and smart style of the fascia, the materi-als chosen, the thorough finish, the durability and the technolo-gies deployed (colour ‘head-up display’, four-zone air condition-ing, ‘keyless’ entry and start-up) add to the ambience of the passenger compartment.

Behind the wheel, the steer-ing is accurate, the 0-62 mph time of 9.8 seconds feels fine and with a maximum speed of 130 mph this 1997cc oil-burner has plenty of go. The Active HDi model, on test here, deliv-ers 140 bhp at 4000 rpm and with 236 lb/ft of max torque it makes a good towing saloon. It has a maximum braked trailer weight of 1775 kg, so it’ll pull quite a load.

Returning an average MPG of 58.8 this version of the 508 is very economical too. The en-gine, as with all 508 engines, benefits from the latest technol-ogy including Peugeot’s e-HDi stop and start system. This is the first of a new generation of stop and start systems which offers improved driveability and economy enhancements of up to 15 percent.

The Peugeot 508 not only looks credible for business, it will also serve as an excellent main family car. It’ll seat four adults comfortably or five at a

push. It’s a very safe car as well and has been given an overall five star Euro NCAP rating.

With its high quality of build, decent design and efficient product performance, the 508 will be appreciated by all who drive it and the individual re-sponsible for the cost of owner-ship, be they the owner or the business they represent.

The comfort of the sur-roundings, the features that are available as standard and the dynamic driving experience are all virtues that will help retain a high level of desire in the 508, for the journey ahead. .
