WED 12 - SUN 16 DECEMBERA determined orphan, a satchel full of spine-chilling stories and a whole lot of rain are due in Corby this Christmas when the deliciously dark Grisly Tales From Tumblewater comes to The Core from Wednesday 12 to Sunday 16 December.

Charles Dickens meets Roald Dahl via Horrible Histories in this festive family show recommended for ages seven and upwards. In the intimate surroundings of The Lab, audiences will be welcomed to Tumblewater. Not that it’s a very welcoming place – unless you’re an undertaker or an umbrella salesman. Caspian Prye, the twisted landowner, controls everything and everyone; even the police. And what’s worse, it never snows

in winter. Into this world stumbles

Daniel Dorey, a fearless orphan armed only with his wits and a host of creepy stories. An ideal Christmas outing for older children and their families, this rip-roaring show – complete with laughs, frights and live music – sees one talented actor bring a multitude of weird, wonderful and sinister characters to glorious life.

Based on Bruno Vincent’s novel for children, Grisly Tales From Tumblewater took the Edinburgh Festival by storm, with Stephen Fry declaring it, “Infectiously, insanely enjoyable”, and Edinburgh Festivals Magazine hailing it as, ‘Astonishing... a thoroughly enjoyable and wonderfully vibrant show’.

30 NOV 2012 - 12 JAN 2013Dolly Levi is a glamorous and wise cracking woman with a big heart. She is also a professional matchmaker focussed on bringing love to the great and good of Manhat-tan but especially to our he-roes, Barnaby and Cornelius who are not going home un-til they’ve each kissed a girl. However, she soon realises that one of her suitors brings more than a little sparkle to her own eye too...with hilari-ous consequences!

This production will reu-nite the critically-acclaimed creative team which staged the musical spectaculars Gypsy (Curve) and The King and I (Curve and national

Originally one of DJ John Peel’s favourite bands of the 1980s, Yeah Yeah Noh’s psychedelic pop cult has grown over the intervening years thanks to the power of the internet.

Their first release back in 1984 was the satirical and humorous jangly pop/post punk affair Cottage Industry (In-Tape records), after this they released two further EPs and developed a more psychedelic style for their last offering Cutting The Heavenly Lawn Of Greatness.Last Rites For The God Of Love in 1985.. WED 5TH DECEMBER Squeeze return to the Roy-al Concert Hall with former Housemartin and Beautiful South front man Paul Heaton as a special guest. Heaton and his band will be performing a selection of old and new songs from his extensive back cata-logue.

Squeeze’s contribution to music was noted in 2010 with the site of their first gig being awarded a prestigious PRS

WOW LOOKS FORWARD TO PANTO SEASON... OH YES WE DO!

CINDERELLA runs at Royal & Derngate from Fri 07 Dec - Sun 06 Jan Tickets can be booked on 01604 624811 or www.royalandderngate.co.uk.

FRI 07 DEC - SUN 06 JAN Cheeky comic Bobby Davro and much-loved actress and presenter Denise Welch star in Cinderella, this year’s magical Christmas pantomime at Royal & Derngate, from Friday 7 De-cember to Sunday 6 January.

Bobby returns to Northamp-ton by popular demand, follow-ing the rapturous reception for his hilarious performance

Cinderella

in last year’s panto. A man of many talents – comedian, im-pressionist, game-show host and actor – he soared to fame in the 1980s with TV shows such as Bobby Davro on The Box and Bobby’s Sketch Pad, before joining the BBC to make Rock with Laughter among other hugely popular shows. He made his straight acting de-but in EastEnders as the love-

able rogue Vinnie Monks, and has also appeared on Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Danc-ing On Ice.

The story of Cinderella wouldn’t be complete without two Ugly Sisters, and they don’t come any uglier than Darren Southworth and Andy Brady, who will be delighting audienc-es with their outrageous an-tics. With beautiful sets, lavish

costumes, and real Shetland ponies to take Cinders to the ball, this year’s panto promises festive enchantment for all the family.

8 JANUARY – 17 FEBRUARYIsraeli shoe designer Kobi Levi takes shoe design to another level, transforming practical footwear into works of art. He shot to international stardom when Lady Gaga wore his ‘Double Boots’ in the video to her single ‘Born this way’. His quirky and inspiring designs have since become a popular choice with celebrities and fashionistas and continue to hit the headlines.

Kobi’s wonderfully bizarre and exciting new footwear, combines the essence of dai-ly objects with the shape of shoes.

“In my artistic footwear design the shoe is my canvas. The trigger to create a new piece comes when an idea, a concept and/or an image comes to mind. The combina-

creates a new hybrid and the design/concept comes to life. The piece is a wearable sculp-ture. It is “alive” with/out the foot/body.” – Kobi

A small collection of Kobi’s shoes will be on display in Northampton Museum & Art Gallery’s shoe lounge on 8 January – 17 February revealing a taster of his designs ahead of his upcoming significant exhibition at the museum in 2014.

FRIDAY 21 DECEMBER ‘Tis the season to be jolly at The Core at Corby Cube, as regular stand-up comedy night Laughing Boy presents a Christmas Special on Friday 21 December. Three talented – and very different – up-and-coming comedians will take the stage at the venue for a night of festive merriment.

Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year nominee and Latitude New Act of the Year finalist, Suzi Ruffell won hearts at Edinburgh Fringe this year with her tales of social ineptitude, overbearing parents, coming out, and desperately trying to

Laughing Boy Christmas Special

fit in. The Guardian called her ‘A real stand-up gem’, and Suzi’s warm, self-deprecating style proved a hit in support slots for Kevin Bridges and Josh Widdicombe on tour this year.

Crowned winner of the FHM Search For A Stand-up Competition, and finalist in three other national comedy awards, Marlon Davis’s skill, energy and charm have drawn comparisons with the legendary Chris Rock. According to Broadway Baby, he is ‘so utterly, effortlessly likeable that you can’t help but be won over as soon as he

walks onto the stage’. Davis combines sharp observations with hilarious characterizations, and a willingness to engage the audience in some unexpected repartee. His recent TV appearances include MTV’s Brown Eyed Boy and Comedy At The Fringe on BBC3.

Paul Chowdhry’s lightning-quick improvisation and brutal honesty have caused him to be described as a ‘dangerous comic genius’ by the Eastern Eye newspaper, and his attempts to break down barriers in the name of comedy have earned him rave reviews from critics around the world. Incisive, often intense, but always very funny, Paul is a regular on Channel 4’s satirical show Stand Up For The Week, and he recently appeared alongside Andrew Neil and Michael Portillo on BBC1’s This Week.

“C’est Cheese”, the Market Harborough based cheese specialist, has found that a large percentage of their cakes of cheese are going to weddings where one or both the bride and groom is Diabetic.

Over several months attend-ing exhibitions it is becoming more and more obvious that people with Diabetes who are getting married are choosing to have a cake of cheese over the traditional wedding cake.

With over 2.8m people in the UK suffering from Diabetes, which is 1 in 20 of the popula-tion, having a Wedding cake without sugar is becoming more popular, not just with the bride and Groom but with the other guests as well.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

RELEASE DATE: OCTOBER 31 Yann Martel’s Life of Pi was long considered an unfilmable novel – and not without good reason. In the film version, the story re-volves around a burned-out writ-er (Rafe Spall) who, in his travels, gets wind of a remarkable story about a man once shipwrecked at sea. The writer approaches the man, Pi Patel (Irrfan Khan), who promises to tell him a story

Life of Pi

that will not only awe him, but also make him believe in God.

We are then treated to a story starting in Pi’s younger years, fo-cusing on his curiosity about (and eventual acceptance of) multiple religions – a practice which only exacerbates his pragmatic-mind-ed father. Life takes a hard turn when Pi, as a young man (played by newcomer Suraj Sharma),

When a freak storm sinks the ship, Pi es-capes on a lifeboat with a small band of animal survivors in tow – including the fearsome tiger, “Richard Parker.” From there, the young man of many faiths must endure a trial of survival along-side his animal companions, learning many things about God and faith along the way.
