    Dear Readers

In an evening class at Stanord the last lecture

was on the mind-body connection - the

relationship between stress and disease. The

speaker (head o psychiatry at Stanord) said,

among other things, that one o the best thingsthat a man could do or his health is to be

married to a woman whereas or a woman,

one o the best things she could do or

her health was to nurture her relationships with

her girlriends. At frst everyone laughed, but he

    was serious.

Women connect with each other dierently and

provide support systems that help each otherto deal with stress and difcult lie experiences.

Physically this quality girlriend time helps us

to create more serotonin - a neurotransmitter

that helps combat depression and can create

a general eeling o well being. Women share

eelings whereas men oten orm relationships

around activities. They rarely sit down with

a buddy and talk about how they eel about

certain things or how their personal livesare going. Jobs? Yes. Sports? Yes. Cars?

Yes. Fishing, hunting, gol? Yes. But their

    eelings? Rarely.

Women do it all o the time. We share rom our souls

with our sisters/mothers, and evidently that is verygood or our health. He said that spending time with

a riend is just as important to our general health as

jogging or working out at a gym.

Theres a tendency to think that when we are

exercising we are doing something good or our

bodies, but when we are hanging out with riends,

we are wasting our time and should be more

productively engagednot true. In act, he saidthat ailure to create and maintain quality personal

relationships with other humans is as dangerous to

    our physical health as smoking!

So every time you hang out to schmooze with a gal

pal, just pat yoursel on the back and congratulate

yoursel or doing something good or your health!

We are indeed very, very lucky. So lets toast to our

Capability reers to the skills, tools

and experience that a person needs in

order to successully perorm her job.

When any o these actors are missing,

there is an increased chance that the

    employee will underperorm. It isnt

uncommon or hiring proessionals tooverlook these basic actors, especially

i a candidate has solid academic

    credentials and comes across as

intelligent and confdent in a job

    interview. Furthermore, its no secret

    that most candidates exaggerate their

abilities on their resumes and job

    applications. Diagnostics that help you

    identiy i an underperorming employee

    has adequate capability:

skDo you know what skills are

needed to perorm the job and whether

the employee possesses those skills?I she doesnt possess the necessary

skills, how will you help her acquire

them, and how long do you expect that

process to take? Skills training takes

time and money, and results are never

    guaranteed unless there is adequate

    commitment rom both the manager

and the employee. Its in everyones

best interest or the manager to set

appropriate expectations or theemployee rom the beginning. This

is especially true i the job requires

    special technical capabilities.

tooEven i an individual has the

skills and experience to do the job,

does he have the tools to deliver peak

    perormance? For example, a highly

skilled and experienced web designercant build a website without adequate

    computer hardware and sotware. The

tools dont have to be the most up-to-

date, but a system that crashes can be

    incredibly rustrating and unproductive,

    even to the best perormer.

    excJust because an employee

has the skills to do a job doesnt meanthat he has the experience to apply

those skills in his specifc position. This

is especially true or recent graduates,

    outside hires rom dierent industries

    and internal hires rom dierent

    departments. While the required skills

may be similar rom one job to the next,

    diering applications and terminology

may require that the new hire take timeto learn the nuances o his new position.

Many people all into the trap o

choosing a proession or job that

is a bad ft. We are who we are.

    Our mental DNA is inuenced

both by our genetics and our early

lie experiences, and it is almost

completely ormed by the time we are20 years old. Rather than trying to

understand ourselves so that we can

choose a calling that builds on our

strengths and aligns with our interests,

we choose jobs because o peer

    pressure and societal inuences.

You probably know a medical doctor

that trained at a prestigious schooland worked or several years at a

    modern hospital. Despite adequate

skills, tools and experience, he is

aloo, insensitive and has a terrible

bedside manner, and you only see him

i no one else is available. He might

have been better suited as a lawyer so

that he could cross-examine a witness

on trial. In short, he really doesntpossess the innate compassion that

would make him a great doctor. He is

a poor ft or his job.

Skills can be taught, but behaviors are

    much more difcult to change

A doctor can improve his bedside

    manner through training and mentoring,

but it takes tremendous eort andmotivation to change natural behavior.

I an individual isnt motivated to

    change, then he probably wont.

Recently, I got into a conversation with

appreciation is due to my clients or

    opinion, clients shouldnt be thanked

because they chose to work with me

and since I am giving them tools to

should be thanking me. I elt like I wasin the twilight zone. I almost asked this

client to someone, I get perturbed. I

can count on one hand the number o

times I have truly elt like I was valued

client. I can easily count the number o

times someone said thank you to meor my business, the number o times

I received a thank you card, or a client

What does that tell me? That my vendors

dont care about me and that I can very

easily take my business elsewhere and

they will not blink or take notice.

Here is an example. .I have had theWORST time fnding a dentist in

Charlotte. In 7 years, I have plowed

through 5 dental practices. Some were

rude, some did more expensive and

    expansive procedures than required,

and in my latest experience, I dont think

I mattered. I had an appointment on

the 3rd day o the snow and ice stormthat hit Charlotte this January; I had

one cavity that needed to be flled and

my dentist needed to check a tooth or

a possible bad root canal rom a prior

dentist (shocking!). I was skeptical about

this practice being open during thestorm, so I looked online. No mention o

their closing on any news website.

Their phone system said they were open

and I had not received a call rom the

    receptionist cancelling my appointment. I

drove in and you can imagine my rustration

when I went in and ound the door locked.

I drove home and called them and let a

    purely proessional voicemail stating that

I went in or my scheduled appointment

and the ofce was locked. I asked i they

had time available the ollowing Tuesday

to reschedule. That was January 12th

and I am writing this on February 14th.I have not heard a peep rom them. So,

continues my journey to fnd a dentist I

    can trust.

Clearly, this dentist has enough clients

with jacked up teeth or clients that they

can snow over to even notice that I no

longer will be giving them business and

not to mention, i anyone comes to measking about dentistry, I will tell them

    1. Akd oy qafyg qo fo g o ay

    g. Serious prospects dont

mind hearing money questions. Theyexpect to be asked these questions.

    Unqualifed prospects run when they

    hear these questions because theyre

not serious about buying. Heres an

example: So I know were in the same

    ball park, approximately how much

    were you looking to spend?

    2.mak a of yoodcovd fo yo c. A

beneft is a result or solution the client

receives rom using your product. As

you create your list, youll begin to

get clear on all the ways your clients

    beneft rom using your product.

    Present the benefts your product

    provides during your meeting. Heres

an example: By adding windowtreatments to your home, the value o

    your home increases.

    3.mak a of yoc g fo wokg w yo.

O course, the benefts o the product

are important, but so are you. In

act, most sales are based on the

    relationship youve developed with the

client. Present the beneft your clients

get rom working with you during the

meeting. Heres an example: All clients

I work with receive personalized service

rom the start o the job, to the end o

    the job.

    4.W c avcvd fo wokg w yo.

Think in terms o measurable results

clients have achieved. This will instill more

confdence as you become clear on the

value you bring to your clients. Share

with the prospect the results clients have

received rom working with you. Heresan example: My client had no idea where

to start with decorating her home. Ater

working with me, she selected a window

treatment that suits her living style and a

    abric within her budget.

So I know were in the same ballpark, approximatelyhow muchwere

5.oca vaof yoodc. Practice saying aloud what

the value o your product is and how

it helps your clients. Hear yourselspeaking with confdence, clarity, and

rom the heart as you communicate the

value o your product. When you clearly

understand the value o your product

and can communicate it with ease, the

Yes, your roles are insisting that you

the heater goes out, your car justturned 100,000 miles and the engine

blows, or you fnd yoursel one o the

millions o unemployed; or, perhaps a

major game changer occurs and then,

one day, you eel a lump! Get the idea?

Talk about image risk! What image are

You show the world an image that

But there is an underlying mood that

others can pick up on, even though

they may not be able to pinpoint it. This

suppressed emotion is energy and i it is

not allowed to release rom your body,

it will remain inside, leaching o o your

Its not too late or you to learn, as I

Listed below are the beginning steps

a positive iMAGE to which others

    are attracted.

Many adults accept defnitions that have

been given to us by others. We seldom

take the time to study the very words that

are shaping our lives. Perhaps you can

agree with this defnition o happiness but

I strongly encourage you to research this

In order to experience happiness during

lies challenges, a strong belie in your

ability to remain positive and move

celebrating our small wins. Believe until

Many o us have become masters at

masking our moods. We were taught

rom an early age to do so big girls

dont cry. Suppressing or denying lower

aects and actually robs you o your

When your moods are becoming larger

than YOU, it is important that you

recognize it and then, be big enough to

is crucial to your ability to release and

    move orward.This person must respect

and believe in you. I they love you then

its even more powerul. The only rules

or your listening partner are, no judging

and no comments - only questions are

you are willing to be that sae space or

    someone else in need.

It is a near impossibility or two emotions

you are doing a daily gratitude list, try not

Angela used burnout as a way to

    make positive new experiences in

her own lie. Perhaps you have adream o working or yoursel and

    doing something you really love?

Angie was previously a Vet Tech in

the Harrisonburg, VA area and had

grown burned out on that career and

perhaps needed a change. She had

lived all over the country as a child so

change was no stranger to Angela.

How did you end up in Charlotte I asked

as we are such a melting

pot here. I came to Charlotte to

visit a cousin and ell in love with the

area in 1996. said Angela. When she

moved here she took an administrative

    position at Queens University. While

working she was earning her degree in

    Organizational Communications. I think

she called it a good people degree.

When I was interviewing Angela or

this story, I could see that this fts her

    upbeat personality and authentic style.

She laughs a lot, which I am sure, is

great with her clients in her current

business. Ater working ull-time duringthe day and going to school at night to

fnish her degree, it was time to move

on rom Queens University. Ater a two

week driving trip through Caliornia, she

worked as a undraising assistant or

The Trust or Public Land. She did not

like the act that there never seems to

be an end to the undraising projects.

    An experienced intellectual property

attorney can guide you through yoursubmission and review your copyright

notices on your works o art whether on

paper, digital, music or any other orm in

    Dear Dodging,

This is a difcult scenario to

handle. Youre right; we use the RESET

model on a daily basis or everyday

external stimuli. But every once in a

while, lie throws us curveballs, negativeand positive stimuli alike which seem

to spring rom nowhere at all but which

heavily impact our days, weeks, or

lies path rom that point on. Reacting

to and coping with lies curveballs is a

    tricky prospect, because such events

push all o our buttons, not just a set

ew. Ater all, whats really happening

is that some unoreseen, unexpectedoccurrence has shited your worldview,

even i just or a ew hours. I there

is one button to ocus on, it is your

    Expectations button which has been

    If you allow lie to

    your life being miserable.

pushed the hardest, and will be the

most difcult to RESET in this case.

    When your Expectations button has

not just been pushed, but in the unique

parlance o the South mashed, aninstant reaction is neither warranted

nor demanded. The honest act o the

matter is that we behave in accordance

with the way things are or the way

things should be, as it relates to your

    perception o the situation. Simplest

o the simple, when the world doesnt

work the way you think it works or

should work, you arent getting what youexpect. Note that Im saying what you

expect not what you want or what you

hope or, but what you expect.

No one expects a curveball. Unlike

    major league pitchers, lie doesnt

tip o what kind o pitch its going

to throw. By the time youve realized

what has happened, your Expectationsbutton has been pushed and locked.

    Besides being blindsided, devastated,

and startled out o your socks, you

    have been disappointed. Lie has

let you down, hurling an utterly

    unexpected circumstance your way

and giving you no chance to get ready

    or it.

    Oy o f a

    a yo dow.Disappointment arises rom a lack o

    possibility to meet expectations. It

breeds where there is no opportunity

or success. The dierence between a

successul RESET and a stuck button

is also the dierence between a sel-

    directed and an other-directed person.

I you allow lie to let you down, i you

believe that lie itsel is controlling

whether youre happy or miserable, then you will spend a good deal o

your lie being miserable. I, however,

you are able to turn misortune into

opportunity, i you are able to see

possibilities in even the most daunting

o setbacks, then you have what it

takes to be happy and successul no

matter what lie throws at you.

In that vein, the key to RESETting ater

a curveball whizzes your way is to

do what the big-leaguers do: adjust.

Whether you make a ool o yoursel

swinging as hard as you can or you

simply watch the ball go by, learn rom

what youve seen. Step out o the box.

Spit on your hands. Adjust your stance,

adjust your swing, adjust the way youapproach the next pitch. You still wont

know what lie is going to throw at you,

but youll have the tools to handle it.

control is learning the correct serving

size. The serving size can usually be

ound by reading nutritional labels. But

the portion is the amount o ood or

drink a person chooses to consume. Inmany cases, the portion eaten is larger

than the serving size simply because we

dont know any better.Learn to visualize

    your portions. Some simple hand

    measurements are:

To keep your portions in line pick

out smaller plates, bowls, cups, and

glassware in your kitchen and measurewhat they hold. You might fnd that a

bowl you thought held 8 ounces o soup

actually holds 16 ounces, meaning youve

been eating twice what you planned.

Serve ood rom the stove onto plates

rather than amily-style at the table,

    which encourages seconds.

By learning to visualize or eyeballyour serving sizes, you are not tied to

    counting calories. However, calories

do count and need to be considered in

order to maintain a healthy weight.

Know how many calories you need

per day in order to maintain your

healthy weight. On average, women will

consume 1800 to 2400 calories per daydepending on their activity level. When

checking your labels or serving sizes,

also check or nutrients. Choose oods

that have no additives or preservatives.

Make your ood nutrient rich not

additive rich. Eat lots o vegetables

and ruit. Vegetables and ruit are rich

in nutrients, fber and are low calories.

Your plate or lunch and dinner should

    be hal flled with vegetables.

    mid-morning munchies? An aternoon

    snack attack? Or a late-night

nosh? No matter what time o day,

sometimes the body just seems to be calling

out or something to nibble on. But snackingdoesnt have to be a bad thing - i you know

how to do it right. Snacking with wellness in

mind can help curb your appetite and keep

you from overeating at meal times. Here are

some tips, ideas and recipes to help you out.

Plan Ahead. We all need a little pick-me-

up during the day. So rather than hitting the

vending machine at work or the fast food placewhen youre out, pack wholesome snacks such

as apples or almonds to have on hand when

the munchies hit. With nutritious snacks at the

ready, snackers remorse is sure to be a thing

    of the past.

Practice Portion Control. Snack time should be

enjoyable, but its important not to overindulge.

A portion-controlled snack such as LeanCuisine(r) Spring Rolls makes it easy to snack

deliciously while enjoying a balanced treat.

Packed with 100 percent white meat chicken,

melted cheeses, crisp vegetables and flavorful

sauces, these tasty spring rolls are 200 calories

per serving and theyre ready in just minutes.

Pay Attention to What You Eat. Mindless eatingleads to overeating. Instead of munching

while you work or sneaking a snack during

your favorite television show, eat only to

satiate hunger. Being aware of the foods you

consume and why you are consuming them

will help you better manage calorie intake and

avoid eating when youre not hungry.
