Small Businesses: The Heart Of America?some thoughts for small Businesses in a struggling economy

management Robyn Crigger, CEO Compass Career Management Solutions–OI Partners Inc.

You have no doubt heard that small businesses are the biggest segment

in business, and yet they don’t seem to get the consideration and support needed to help them survive this struggling economy. Banks and large corporations are

surviving as they have deep pockets and multiple venues of

support. they can hold out longer when customers scale back their purchasing. not the case for small businesses, though.

small businesses Closing their doors

over the summer more small businesses closed after holding

out for 18+ months. it wouldn’t be a

surprise to see more close this fall. with unemployment holding steady, if not increasing, few people have money to spend, and where will their money go? Banks and mortgage companies (for mortgages and rent), utilities (Duke, Piedmont gas, water), gas for cars (gasoline companies) – all Big firms. Plus we all haVe to pay taxes to our government.

loans mean more debtthere was talk about offering small businesses loans, but that would only leave small businesses with more money to pay back later. small business owners don’t want more debt. when becoming a small owner, one of my biggest surprises was how much we were required to pay on any money earned, and then at the end of the year, we paid taxes on the money we had again. of course, my question

Page 7: October Issue- Women With Know How E= Magazine Featuring Nascar Driver Candace Munzy

then was “how does a small business owner save for a rainy day?”

add onto that expense, we small businesses have to have insurance on everything: fees for a license to have a business, taxes on our business property (building/land), then we are charged on our office furnishings and equipment, and let’s not forget health, liability, and workers comp insurance,.etc. how can there possibly be any money left to “live on”?

no funds to hire new workersthere are many small business owners who are passionate about our businesses, and find it rewarding to provide a service to help others. however, it is still sad that many small businesses are struggling, and it is unclear what our government is doing to be of any real support. recently, someone encouraged all businesses to hire one employee for six months to help the economy, but i know that there are small business owners who are not even paying themselves, much less have money for a new employee.

More bank Feesanother recent notice announced that some banks are increasing credit card charges, and lately a bank sent out a notice that small business accounts, who keep less than $1,000 will be charged a fee of $10 a month. great! so the banks are paid $10 a month to hold small businesses’ money? with

all the technology and changes in the banking world, (automated tellers, etc.), why do we need to pay more fees?

Government needs to helpon the other hand, small businesses have been able to survive a lot over time, though it would be nice for “government and big businesses” to take a load off of the “little guys”. as creative and spunky as small businesses have been in the past, i will continue to root for them! yahoo to the american small Businesses!!! !

Many of you use excel to create budgets and crunch numbers. did

you know that you can make a list (or database) in excel? excel provides a lot of tools to help you sort, filter, color code and extract information from your list.

Creating the listFirst what do i mean by “list”? a data-

base is a collection of infor-mation in an organized

structure. in excel you can create a database by creating a row of column headings that will be the categories

or fields headings for the information to follow.

For example, you might have a field called First name, another

called last name, etc. they could oc-cupy cells a1, a2, and so on.

Below these fields, you can enter the indi-vidual records (rows) of information such as Janet under the First name heading and anDerson under the last name heading and so on. Complete this record by entering all of the data that relates to the column headings. you might have a database of addresses so you might have fields like First name, last name, ad-dress1, address2, City, state, and zip.

enter in as many records as you like, however there is a limit. excel 2007 has 1,048,576 rows in a sheet, so you can have 1,048,575 records. if you have that many friends, relatives or clients, congrat-ulations!!! since you cannot exceed one sheet when you create a database, that is your limit.

now for the fun part. Don’t worry about putting them in any kind of order. excel has great tools to help you rearrange your records in many ways.

how to sort Your listin most versions, you can use the easy right CliCk method. Clicking with your right mouse button in the correct location garners a menu that is appli-cable to the area you clicked on. in my classes i say “right click in the right location gets you the right menu.”

in the database, right CliCk in the column you want to sort by and move your mouse to the word sort. this will open another menu where you could choose a to z or z to a, sort by color, or custom sort. of course, if you choose a to z , this would sort your entire list by this column (field) from a to z. Choosing Custom sort would allow you to pick the column to sort by, then when there is a duplicate in that field…say 3 anDersons, you can tell it to sort a to z by the First names. so if you have Janet anderson, Bill anderson, and sam anderson, excel would sort your list where Bill ander-son’s record would be the first of the andersons, Janet’s would be next and sam’s record would be the last of the anderson records.

you could continue this sorting us-ing other fields. you could sort by zip Codes, then by last names, then by First names.

you may have a field that contains pricing. if you previously used condi-tional formatting to format any value over a certain number..say $500 and

more to be red and under $500 is green, you can sort by color. again right CliCk and choose sort -> by color. you can direct excel to put the red on top.

how to Filter Your listthere may be times where you want to filter the list. you only want to see those folks who live in north Carolina. again, you can use the right mouse button to do some of this. if you want to see only the records from nC, you would right CliCk in the state col-umn on one of the values that says

Page 10: October Issue- Women With Know How E= Magazine Featuring Nascar Driver Candace Munzy

10®

nC. From the shortcut menu, you would choose Filter -> Filter by select-ed cell’s value. Bingo, you are looking at only the records where nC is in the state field. Don’t worry; the rest of your list is still there. excel just hid the rows where the state value was something other than nC.

your next question is “how do i get the rest of the group back?” in excel 2007, on the Data tab, in the sort and Filter group, you can choose the ‘clear’ button.

sort and Filter using the ribbonBy using the clear button, you are introduced to another method of sorting and filtering. on the Data tab, in the sort and Filter group you will see

buttons that relate to your database. the a/z button will sort by the column (field) your cursor currently is in. By choosing the large Filter button, you will create down arrow buttons next to each field heading, which produces a menu of choices relating to that field.

For example if you click on the down arrow on the state field you can dese-lect the box next to select all and then click on the box next to nC, and presto you have filtered the list to show only those records in north Carolina.

By using these tools, you can create a great list of clients, customers, friends or anything else you want to keep track of. good luck in creating your data-base. next month i will share with you the ins and outs of mail merge. great for creating your holiday card labels. happy learning!

You can create a great list of clients, customers, friends or anything else

october is dedicated to breast cancer awareness and, for me, it is a particularly impor-

tant month because i am a breast cancer survivor. i don’t think i can remember a day that i ever thought i would have been told “you have

breast cancer”. in fact, i didn’t even do breast

exams. it just wasn’t something that i ever thought about. yes, i went annually to have my mammogram,

but that was “routine”. nothing was going to hap-

pen to me.

Wasting the doctor’s timei was in the shower getting ready for work

one morning and felt something odd. it felt as if you laid a straw on its side and ran your finger down the length of the straw. odd, i thought, but put it out of my mind. something kept nagging at me and finally i decided to make a quick trip to my oB-gyn. why? i really wasn’t sure. i didn’t think it was anything and, in fact, when my doctor came into the examining room, i found myself apologizing because i felt that i probably was wasting her time. she checked me out and said that it was not a lump but praised me for coming in just to be on the safe side. as i was dressing and getting ready to leave, she decided that she wanted me to go for a digital ultrasound. again, “just to be safe”.

i went. i really loved my radiology practice the moment i stepped in the

door. my tech was fairly young, very sweet and we chatted about many things while she completed my digital mammography. i waited in the room while the films were developed. i read a national geographic. no, actually i just kind of held it as i was starting to get a teeny bit anxious. i stood up as she returned to thank her and to leave. “wait”, she said. “i have to take a few more. i’m kind of new…” Funny, i thought, she’s not really making eye contact and i was starting to feel very, very tense.

a lot going oni waited, once again, while more films were developed. no magazine. she returned and said that she needed to take me down the hall for just one more thing. i followed, was shown a cot and asked to lay down and waited. shortly, a young lady came in and with a quick smile introduced herself and got down to business. lots of pointing, clicking and drawing lines on a monitor that i could barely see to my right. hmmm, i thought. this does not seem good. she comments, “you are a very busy lady, very busy lady”. “yes,” i replied, “and i am sorry i can’t remember where we met.” she had a puzzled look on her face and said “i mean you have a lot going on in your breast.” ohhh, doesn’t sound like this is where the party needs to be, i think to myself.

in competent handsi walk down the hall to the dressing room, put on my clothes and am starting to

get even more anxious. i meet with her outside. she is a little dynamo! Bright and to the point. i like her and know that i am in very competent hands. she said that she sees some things that are a little disturbing. o.k., what next? a biopsy, she replies. “on Friday.” i’m not too keen with that but know that, still, everything will be “just fine”.

taking a Friendso, i go to the hospital with a colleague/friend from work all the while letting her know that i am a big girl and can certainly do this by myself. wrong! i needed her. as things began to sink in and i got ready for my biopsy, i was so glad to have had her there. we left and i was told that i would be called the first of the week with results. kind of weak and a little shaky, i knew the worst was over. i would have my results which certainly were going to be just fine and then could get back to business and get this all behind me.

life changing newsmonday – 3:35 ish (lol) i certainly do know when that phone call came in. the first thing i heard was,” i have not so great news, and i need for you to get somewhere so you can take some information.” i headed to the conference room, starting to feel very shaky. “your biopsy came back positive. you have breast cancer.” talk about being stunned. i was blown away! when we hung up, i called my senior staff into the conference room and told them the news. then i called my family. the rest of the staff was told as well. that is a day

i will always remember. that is a day that changed my life forever.

save your own lifei wanted to share this part of my health history for a few reasons. you can make great strides to save your own life by doing self breast exams regularly. many doctor’s offices provide a free exam guide just for the asking. get your annual checkup and mammogram. Please do this! had i not accidentally found something unusual in the shower and, by the grace of god not checked it out, i would not be here today. mine was a fairly aggressive cancer and by the time i was diagnosed and had my surgery (only 23 days after diagnosis), it had already travelled to my lymph nodes. i was 45 years old.

a special bondBeing diagnosed with, living with and recovering from cancer will change your life forever. For me it was like being in a

sorority that i didn’t want to belong to . i have met some of the most phenomenal ladies who are cancer survivors throughout this journey. we went through chemo together, we became friends, we supported Carolina Breast Friends, a local 501(c)3, supported fundraising activities and worked to build “Project Pink house”. i support susan g. komen and started my second company, Premier healthcare resources, because it was a way that i could make positive contributions to the healthcare community that had saved my life.

Get proactive right awayso, during Breast Cancer awareness month, if you haven’t had your mammogram, please schedule one! i hope that you do your monthly breast exams. i hope you never join this special “sorority”. i hope you support cancer research. i hope you live a long, happy and healthy life!

Are You Allowing Goals to Happen?how to rediscover your innate abilities to achieve

motivational Sheree Demao, Me, Myself & Inc.

think back to the freedom we had as children to achieve without hesitation and with-

out considering potential risks. From a very young age, we began to achieve without knowing or under-standing that we had goals.

as children, we achieved without under-standing why or how, and everything

became a learning experi-ence. we simply decided

whatever it was we were going to do and then set out to do it. as a result, we con-tinually progressed to

a higher level.

achieving From the very start

From the time we are born, we are achieving and making phenomenal

strides — almost moment by moment during those first years of life. so why should that stop as we get older? the valuable lesson that each one of us can take from our childhood, no matter what era or socioeconomic status we were born into, is that achievement is a very natural and personally gratifying experience. we are quite literally born to achieve, each and every one of us, but we are born to achieve for ourselves, not for others.

learning around the Clockwhen we first are slapped into this world and let out our first cry, we have achieved life and are on a wonderful track of accelerated achievement for the next few short years: learning to grasp, walk, talk, read, write … and the list goes on. the key to our achievement at this very young and wonder filled age is in the learning. we eat, sleep and breathe

Page 17: October Issue- Women With Know How E= Magazine Featuring Nascar Driver Candace Munzy

17®

the process of learning on a 24/7 basis. it comes naturally and effortlessly. we are little sponges absorbing and processing everything around us and it is completely natural, not overwhelming. we naturally live by the three promises my grandmother taught me. we find a way or make a way. we don’t feel guilty about making life easier for ourselves. we keep our mind open to all possible resources and support. it is when we begin to communicate that all sorts of limitations suddenly become part of our mindset. and where do these limitations come from? well, not from us, but from others. as we grow older, others start to point out, from their perspective or experience, why something cannot or should not be done. expectations by others also result in goals coming into our spheres that are not ours, but theirs.

Following the rulesanother aspect of our lives that begins to shape the way we approach goals is, quite frankly, when we get into a more structured learning environment. even though we are learning, we are also being made aware of what can and cannot be done. rules become a part of our existence, and with these rules, a mindset of limitation develops. now this is not to say that rules are not important, because when it comes to safety and organization in group settings, they certainly have their place. the key is to take rules in the context of what they are doing as a whole versus what they are doing to you.

there is something to be said for the idea that rules are meant to be broken. the key is to begin to understand your comfort level with going beyond or outside the rules and to understand when these comfort zones began to take shape. how did you react to rules and other’s perceptions as a child? Did you willingly accept them and no longer attempt something you may have otherwise tried? Did you question why? Did you rebel and do forbidden things anyway? Did you try to achieve in another way to get around the rules?

reshaping Your Goalshow you approach your goals today were shaped during this formative time. But it does not mean you cannot reshape them. that is the beauty of being your own person. we do have the ability to change the way we think. your life is what your thoughts make it.

what i hope manifests for you in reading this is a renewed sense of hope that you can make great strides, just like you did when you didn’t know any better. the old adage, “i think i can, therefore i can” is something to embrace with all the passion you have inside. it all comes down to knowing what you truly desire and allowing all the pieces in your life to synergize to make it happen. it also comes down to figuring out the difference between what is perceived to be an obstacle or a deterrent, and what really is one.

Candace muzny: racing

to a goal

Page 19: October Issue- Women With Know How E= Magazine Featuring Nascar Driver Candace Munzy

by Kim Hughes

This High-Powered Professional Race Car Driver is Setting a Course for Success

if you are a sports fan, specifically a motorsports and auto racing fan, you probably

have noticed that 99.9% of the drivers are male. things are starting to change. over the last few years especially, women have been making their mark in the racing industry.

this month’s featured woman with know how, Candace muzny, is someone who is taking the stereotype of women in racing, crushing it and leaving it far behind her in the dust.

Candace is a driver in the nasCar whelen all-american series. to those of you who may not know much about nasCar, the whelen all-american series is one of the many divisions of nasCar. it is not a race that you will see televised like the widely popular Friday (Camping world truck series), saturday (nationwide series), or sunday (sprint Cup series)

races. the nasCar whelen all-american series is considered a ‘home track’, which is more of a grassroots division.

a racer is born Candace was born and raised in oklahoma City, oklahoma, and from her earliest recollections, racing was always a factor in her life. growing up, her parents took her to the racetrack often where her cousins were active race car drivers. an interest in racing was sparked in Candace at an early age and added to that, her father owned a texaco gas station and a towing company. through her family’s businesses, she learned to work on cars and how to make repairs. in high school, Candace often drag-raced the boys on the weekends, an activity that proved lucrative and quenched her thirst for adrenaline and speed.

finding her passion after graduating from high school, Candace stepped aside from racing,

19®

20®®

20

got a degree in fashion marketing and became a sales representative for clothing buyers. she earned a great income, but it wasn’t her passion. she decided to leaver her job, move back home to oklahoma and work with her family tow-truck business. During a conversation with her mother one day, Candace suddenly realized what her passion was and what she was meant to do… racing! “i actually started late,” states Candace. “i suggest that people start around four years old and evolve with racing. But it really is never too late to start.”

after much training and in her first official race, Candace started 29th and finished 14th. she began running a late-model car from her then fiancé. as she continued to race, she hit a dry streak and had a problem securing a sponsor. he fiancé encouraged her to relocate to California. once she moved there, she locked in a sponsor and in 14 days, worked with her fiancé to build a race car from the bottom up.

her fiancé raced in the new car and she kept his old car. “it taught me a lot,” says Candace. “not having the best equipment really helped me to learn how to drive.” at the end of the season, Candace finished 7th in points. she then continued to race for four years until life took a very unexpected turn.

life moves on in 2007, life changed for Candace when her fiancé passed way. instead of letting his passing hold her victim, she pushed forward. after encouragement from friend and car sponsor, Jesse James, of west Coast Choppers, Candace moved to the southeast, settling in mooresville, nC, to continue her dream of becoming a strong and viable nasCar driver. she started her own shop and built a new race car to fit into the specifications held in our area.

though last season didn’t rank on Candace’s list of breakout years, this season she is making a strong run in her division with nine top five finishes and four top three finishes.

Candace aspires to progress to the nasCar k&n Pro series in the coming season and continuing to progress to the Camping world truck series, where she would initially like to run 5-7 races to get her feet wet. Beyond that? “i want to make it to sprint (the premiere division of nasCar),” says Candace. “we haven’t had a very strong woman driver since

’76. Janet guthrie placed 15th that year and that was the first sold out event ever at Charlotte motor speedway.”

Balancing Business not only is Candace a race car driver, but she also is a team owner of C&n motorsports. Candace races out of her team’s stable and employs her own crew that serves as her support team during the week, preparing the car for races and on weekend’s, working with her during the race. on top of the work surrounding her car, Candace also handles her marketing and sponsorship coordination. “it’s hard to handle, but this is the first year where i have been

fully able to have my crew take care of the car,” says Candace. “i am able to talk to sponsors and fly to places i need to get things done.”

one of the biggest obstacles that Candace is facing is not her gender, but sponsorships. there is no secret that sponsorship for nasCar, much less sponsorship for any level of business, has declined due to marketing cuts. in an industry that survives by sponsorship dollars, it is often how much money you bring with you that determines your progress through the ranks. “i don’t have the right last name,” says Candace. “But i have to prove them

wrong, keep going and digging hard. i love proving people wrong.” in moving to the nasCar k&n Pro series next year, she will be able to offer potential sponsors airtime, such as the television station, Versus, which will be picking up and airing the races in 2011.

gaining respect on and off the track though Candace hasn’t received much grief from men in racing, she has encountered some ribbing. “it is the same for any driver; if you are new, they are going to pick on you. it doesn’t matter if you are a guy or a girl – it is just anyone that is new.”

on the track, two brothers clipped Candace during a race (in other words, gave her some low-blows and tried to psyche her out), but after the exchange, Candace confronted them and made her presence known. since their exchange, the blows have ceased, but Candace has not given them an inch on the track. “you have to show people that you aren’t going to lie down and take it. if you are going to dish it out, you better be willing to take it.”

when i mention to Candace that i’ve heard complaints about the fundamentals of nasCar-- that drivers only go in circles or ‘play chase’, the races are too long, it is not really a sport,

Page 23: October Issue- Women With Know How E= Magazine Featuring Nascar Driver Candace Munzy

and so on--she responds right away. “i hear that all the time!” says Candace. “if you think it is so boring, imagine being on the track with 42 other maniacs just like you, who are there to win and are out for blood. i mean, there is not one boring thing about racing. to say it is not a sport...i lose five pounds of water weight in one day! if you don’t have upper body strength, you will fall out of your seat (a term for running out of energy).” Candace remains physically active by kick-boxing three days a week, lifting weights, and even is adding in ballroom dancing to use as many muscles as she can to stay as fit as possible.

after the checker flag drops Candace looks to continue assisting women in reaching their goals in the racing industry. in the future, she would like to create her own driver development program for women. though she realizes she has to get herself running at full capacity and in a situation where she can bring a protégé onboard, she does have a few words for women who are itching to get behind the wheel and make an impact in the industry. “you have to work hard, unite with your passion, and be dedicated. never give up. never; no matter how gloomy or meek things seem. it is extremely hard, but you can’t give up. it isn’t an option.” what comes across when you are in the presence of Candace munzy is not only her strong and candid attitude, but also her pure and true demeanor.

she is a woman on a mission; a woman who understands the meaning of relationships and connections. she is business-minded and focused, and also personal and intimate. as Candace continues to progress through her racing career, it will be exciting to watch her grow and continue to gain success. i am willing to guarantee that the Candace muzny i met in september of 2010 will be the same Candace muzny who will make it to the top!?

What is the best investment one could put in their home?

i believe any investment in your home that makes it comfortable and appeal-ing to you is always the best invest-ment. From a real estate value, kitch-ens and baths will get you the most monetary return, and make an impact on how you personally feel about your home. the kitchen is the center of fam-ily gatherings! it should be functional as well as attractive. updating a counter-top or backsplash, adding a fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference in how you see your home.

another update to consider is using your outside space. you can have a great area added to your home to gather and enjoy the outdoors with some simple changes. update a drab patio to look like tile or flagstone, dress up outdoor furniture, add a patio grill, new landscaping, and the trans-formation can be tremendous.

What keeps you moving in a sputtering economy?i have a positive attitude about every-thing! i am grateful for the business i do have and am always looking for ways to improve what i offer to both the in-staller and the homeowner. a sense of

humor, a great support system, family and friends to bounce ideas off of, all help keep me focused.

Where do you see the company in five years?this is a hard one! i am hoping, as we all are, to see the economy start to turn around. hopefully we will continue to grow as the company focuses on new products that will allow us to expand our brand. the products we offer are well known on the west coast, so get-ting our presence out there for the east coast is a must. we will start next year expanding our class offerings to include the a new “limestone” wall plaster class, and an advanced coloring class. we will be offering a new garage floor sealer, new paint colors, and a kit that will allow an installer to offer a com-plete outdoor BBQ custom made.

Your profession lies in a male dominated field. What advice do you have for women breaking in?First, educate yourself. know the indus-try and your product. Don’t try to fudge answers. i start every class i teach stating that if i don’t know something, i will either yield to someone who does, or find out the answer and get back to the class. take classes and/or attend seminars. read the latest publications. get a mentor.

second, always be yourself. i grew up with a big male influence in my life, with grandfathers, my father, and four

brothers. i am at ease in a male envi-ronment, however, i am a woman and i don’t need to be ‘one of the boys’ to fit in. i don’t feel that i have to prove my-self in order to get the respect i should get from anyone.

We all need to recharge and regain balance in our lives. What do you do to relieve stress?i immensely enjoy my family, spend-ing time with my husband, children and grandchildren. nothing like a weekend at the beach! i have a huge garden and am very happy working in it. i am an avid

fisherman and hunt-er. i also volunteer with the rotary and Disney Blanketeers.

What business practices do you work by that sets you apart?i am very proud to be a rotarian and use the rotary 4 way test in my busi-ness and personal life. is it the truth? is it fair to all concerned? will it build good will and better friendships? will it be beneficial for all concerned? with these in place, you can’t go wrong!

great gridiron fare

step up your game-day menu with a sizzling recipe from celebrity chef michael symon. his burger has a secret ingredient that turns ordinary tailgate food into championship fare – pork.

32®

Page 33: October Issue- Women With Know How E= Magazine Featuring Nascar Driver Candace Munzy

“pork is a great protein to cook for lots of reasons – every cut tastes great and it’s extremely versatile,” said symon. “i

actually love to layer pork on pork - it adds texture to the dish and provides even more depth of flavor. that’s a huge reason why i’m such a pork fan – you can use various cuts on their own or combine them into one fantastic dish.”

this season, michael is opening up his playbook for cooking up a winning tailgate:when creating the prefect football feast, a little goes a long way. with just a couple pork cuts, you can create a wide variety of crowd-pleasing dishes like symon’s three-in-one recipe for a Porky Burger. have the succulent pulled pork and tender pork burgers on their own, or combine them with a few zesty garnishes to create one mouth-watering masterpiece.

Just because you’re hosting the party doesn’t mean

you’re responsible for making all the dishes. turn your tailgate into a potluck and have your guests bring their favorite pork-inspired dish. with pork’s versatility, you’re guaranteed to keep drawing a crowd all season long. whether you’re tailgating in the parking lot or at a backyard barbecue, make sure the food is ready at least two hours before the game. this will allow for plenty of time to eat and clean up before kickoff. no one wants to be doing dishes at game time or carrying a plate for the walk to the stadium.

For more mouthwatering recipes, a free brochure on a favorite go-to cut for tailgating, the pork shoulder, videos, and tips visit www.theotherwhitemeat.com. you can also follow the national Pork Board on Facebook at facebook.com/theotherwhitemeat and on twitter @allaboutPork.

relationshiPs Mary Elizabeth Murphy, Managing Director of S.T.A.R. Resources

dear Mary elizabeth, recently i was asked the following questions

regarding fear: “have you ever thought about how fear affects the quality of your life? does it limit you? does it keep you safe? What do you fear? When do other people’s fears impact your life?” Mary elizabeth, how do you reset Your buttons when facing fears?

sincerely, Fearful in Franklin

Dear Fearful, First, let’s consider the source of your fears. are they your fears or the fears of others? take a look at the following fear

based questions:

What do you fear? Do they relate to your business, your

career? will you get that raise, contract

renewed? Does your boss like you? how about your family, friends, marriage? will there be enough money for the kids to go to college? will your spouse still love you at 45? how will your friends re-spond to the news of your divorce? what about society or cultural issues, world economy, world peace, getting through security at the airport?

we all have fears. some are short lived – how am i going to get through this traffic jam and make it to my interview on time? some are long term – will i have enough money to retire? many are at any point in between. how often does fear limit you living your life? Do you find yourself responding to your fear vs. seizing the moment or following your passion? are you often saying to yourself “if only”?

When do other people’s fears impact your life? what does national security really mean? how does that impact my family, how are my personal rights affected,

will my children be safe at school? in what ways will the budget cuts impact our department, social services, community project? if taxes go up how will i afford my home, tuition payments, to keep my business? my neighbors fear the new neighbors moving in, how some neighbors care for their property, vandalism. what are my thoughts about these fears?

how other people think and behave has a great impact on our lives. a simple fear that goes unaddressed can spread like wildfire through a person, home, commu-nity, and the world. remember the story of Chicken little? are you responding to your true feelings or thoughts on the matter or are you responding to the influ-ence of other people’s fears? Do you find yourself conforming to other people’s rules because of their fears or because of the things they have told you that you “should” fear? is your fact finding and intuition ruling your life or your communi-ties fear based beliefs?

so how do you reset Your Buttons when facing those fears? First get in touch with the fear button.

identify which button or combina-tions of buttons are being pushed. is it your fear of being taken advantage of or losing control? are you fearful because you may no longer be accepted, respect-ed, or liked? Does this fear play on your sense of security or safety? is your fear

threatening your belief of what is right?

take a deep breath and drink a glass of water. Breathing is very important when feeling fear. we tend to take short-er, shallow breaths from our chest vs. full breaths from our abdomen. stop and take as full a breath as possible. expand your belly like a balloon while taking in lots of oxygen through your nose. Count to 10 as you release the air through your mouth, while deflating the balloon so that your stomach almost touches your spine. Do this 3 times. next, loosen your shoulders by rolling them front and back, lifting them up and down. turn your head slowly from side to side, then drop your

chin to your chest and then slowly lift your chin into the air so that you feel the stretch in your neck.

remind yourself that you may not be able to control how you feel but you can control how you think and act. Face the fear and begin to consider your action plan or worst case solution. revisit your fear and ask yourself what you can do in this moment to allevi-ate this fear. most fears are able to fester and grow due to lack of communication.

Make a communication plan so that you can be more informed. By hav-

ing more information you will be better equipped to determine if this fear is real and, if so, how can it be resolved?

the bottom line is – the longer you hold on to the fear, internalize, worry about etc., the more power you are giving the fear. the more powerful the fear the more paralyzing it becomes – the more limits you place on your life.

it’s your life, to the best of our knowledge we only get one – or at least one that we know about at any given time. why not live it fully? limit your fears before they limit you.

Business Mixed with Social? Yes, it’s a Necessity!times they are a Changin’

Clearly, it is not enough to update your website anymore; in fact, i have

come across several clients who have removed their websites completely to gain a social media only presence.

while i don’t recommend this, it does truly show the trends in online presence. you obviously want to be

seen where people are and there is absolutely no better place

to be seen than on social media networks!

in writing this month’s column, i had to laugh at

my progress through the online world. in the mid-

90s when my attachment began, i remember fondly

when chatting and being a part of online forums was revolutionary. i also

remember dial-up internet connections;

what a treat that was! i cannot tell you how many nights i heard, ‘kimBerly kristin! get off the computer; i need to make a call!’ For the vast portion of online users, that is no longer a problem and chatting and email are only a portion of the work we do online. From paying bills, to becoming an ordained minister, to searching for the man or woman of your dreams, the online world has captivated us.

or how about this - remember when you use to google a person before you had an introductory meeting with someone or interviewed a new employee? well, now people (me included) are searching for people to gain insight on Facebook. i recently did this a few weeks back after sifting through intern resumes for the fall semester. after browsing around Facebook and looking over some pages, i was able to ixnay several candidates based on their less than stellar behavior online.

Breaking down the jargon First off, let me give you a brief description of the new trends in social media and where i highly suggest that you and your business are seen:

Facebook – arguably, the most widely used of all social media sites. Facebook allows you to do everything from uniting with high school friends to promoting your upcoming events.

twitter – View twitter as the status update of Facebook; 140 characters to say what you need to say. you engage with followers by ‘tweeting’ to them and ‘retweeting’ their updates to your followers. this network seems to be the least understood, but to twitter nerds like me, i hash tag, rt, and trend with the best of them!

Foursquare – the epitome of stalking (and currently gaining popularity by the

second). on Foursquare you ‘check in’ to venues (driven by the gPs on your smartphone) and are alerted to where your friends are ‘checking in’. in turn, you compete for ‘mayorship’ of venues and ‘badges’ to showcase your high activity. this option is ideal for marketing your business, your clients, and positioning yourself as a mover and shaker.

linkedin- By far, the most professional of all social media sites. ideal to find a job, gain clients, and network virtually.

Myspace – well, don’t waste your time. that boat has sailed…

Just like fashion, find your styletime and time again, i am complemented for my social media style. i promote my events and clients in a fun way and at the same time, i offer a glimpse into my personal life. i am someone outside of kim hughes

of 704events.com and i find the most successful aspect of my social media style is that my clients see how hard i work for them and at the same time, they learn about me as a person. given my interaction style, i have brought on over 10 clients in the last year alone who connected with me on social media networks and were impressed with my dedication and attention to my clients individually. in all cases, we began by commenting on each other’s posts on Facebook and twitter and developed a work relationship – extremely easy and effortlessly.

make it work!ok, so you have the basics down and are ready to roll! here are my live and die by tips to social media success. to me, it has garnered great success and has translated to not only great connection success and expanding my coverage reach by over 150%, but also helped me create relationships with new clients i may have not reached before!

tips for maximizing social media:

• update regularly. as with advertising, networking, website updates, and your business’ presence, you need to be consistent and be active. a few years back, nothing frustrated me more than websites that were not regularly updated – now, i believe it is suicide if social media outlets are not updated. to me, if people are not

willing to do an update about their business, which takes 10 seconds, to their followers aka their business fans, why should we care about their business?

• engage with your networks. if someone communicates with you, respond back. in the online world, it is extremely easy to lose a personal touch. stay connected with your supporting cast!

• know the ‘ethics’ behind social media. there isn’t a manual but it’s common sense. Don’t go crazy and add everyone that your friends are friends with on Facebook or twitter, don’t comment on every post to promote yourself and your business, and don’t send constant blast emails, event invitations, and suggestions. Be courteous and be respectful. in advertising, there is a lot of ‘noise’ that we need to break through to promote ourselves, but being a loud, obnoxious noise is a fast track to get blocked, deleted or marked as spam. above and beyond, remember that these social media networks are social based and were built to create friendships and keep people connected.

• Be a consumer for yourself. you know what you like to see and you know what grabs your attention. Post what you would like to see and use tact.

Page 41: October Issue- Women With Know How E= Magazine Featuring Nascar Driver Candace Munzy

41®

• extend offers to engage your customers. offer discounts, online referral codes and special gifts.

• Be private yet accessible. Divulge some information about you but keep it simple and something that has merit. no one truthfully cares of you are going to home Depot and then taking a nap.

• Be smart. i am not going to lie; i have had a few social media stalkers and people who tried to get a little too comfortable with me. on my Facebook page, you will notice that my information is extremely basic and i am pretty conservative with personal information that i share. Do i worry

about myself having a huge presence online? absolutely not.

• stay safe. many of the social media applications will pull from the gPs on your phone. when you are updating and uploading new applications don’t just continue to click next; be intentional with what you are agreeing to. several applications, specifically Foursquare and twitter, will detail your exact locale to your friends, followers, and ‘likers’ automatically.

i invite you to connect with me via social media! take a look at how i approach the online world and see if my tactics are something that you can see implementing.

It’s Embedded in my Heritage

“The HUNT, that’s what it’s all about for me. It’s not about killing the animal, that’s actually incidental to the whole experience, it’s so much more than that! Hence,

the title of this book: The Adventure of it All: It’s Embedded in My Heritage.”

For over sixty years, Vermont native and North Carolina resident Bill Ryan has had a deep passion for trophy hunting. From the

“early years” of hunting deer in the forests near his childhood home; to completing the “Grand Slam” of North American sheep hunting; to televised moose hunts with world-renowned hunter Jim Shockey; to braving wind storms on the Alaska

Peninsula at age 70; Ryan is in it for the adventure. The Adventure of it All: It’s Embedded in My Heritage is his legacy, an incredible collection of hunting stories and photos, and a priceless keepsake for hunters and their families. With fervor, excitement and wit, Ryan teaches readers that life is truly about the journey; sometimes it’s best to just enjoy the adventure of it all.

ColleCtors AssoCiAtion

The Carolina Decoy Collectors Association is a private non-profit organization established to promote and enhance the decoy collecting environment for its members. The goal of the association is to educate its members and promote interest in decoy collecting.

The association usually has meetings twice each year which include buy-sell-swap sessions, educational programs, decoy displays, and social events. These meetings are a great place for new collectors to learn more about decoy collecting and meet the dealers and fellow collectors.

The association and its members maintain relationships with all decoy collecting related entities, such as auction companies, other decoy collecting associations, carvers guides, waterfowl museums and waterfowl festivals. Information about these entities is available for new collectors.

The association established a decoy collectors “Code of Conduct” which sets guidelines for selling or trading decoys among its members. New members can be assigned an experienced member as a mentor to help them make their initial purchases. Decoys may be brought to the meetings by the interested public to be appraised or sold.

Kroghie, with Maggie, after a successful duck hunt at Lake Mattamuskeet, N.C. in 2004.

About the AuthorKroghie Andresen has enjoyed hunting

and the outdoors since his early teens in eastern North Carolina. His waterfowl hunting experiences began when he shot two lesser scaup from a stake blind in the mouth of Bath Creek at the age of fifteen. since then his passion for hunting has grown and flourished.

Kroghie worked as a banker for First union National Bank, now Wachovia, for thirty three years before retiring in 2004. Though his work had no connection with hunting, he continued to pursue his hobby during spare time away from work. While living in raleigh in 1979, his wife ross, bought him his first decoy to decorate their new den. This started a collection that has grown into over 1,100 North Carolina decoys. An early decision to limit his collection to Back Bay, Virginia, and North Carolina decoys led to a very specialized collection. Kroghie always tried to document the history and provenance of his decoys. The lack of information on many North Carolina decoys led him to research many previously unidentified carvers as well as those that are well known. This research and thirty years of collecting decoys have culminated with this book.

Kroghie received a B.s. degree in Civil Engineering from The Citadel in 1966 and an MBA from East Carolina university in 1971. He and his wife currently reside in Charlotte, N.C. They have two grown children, Clark and Hailey.
