How did you get star ted in this business

Three years ago a former col-league and friend called and asked me two questions that I didnrsquot realize until later would have such a pro-found effect on my future First are you happy with the results of your current skincare And second where would you be today if you had part-nered with the doctors that created Proactivreg from the beginning

These timelines can drag the process out much longer than needed and that means neither party is going to have their financial needs met timely or have a resolution needed on their personal timeline Litigation also requires court appearances The court sets these court dates with no regard to the par-ticipantrsquos obligations So court dates can cost you time away from work Further the caseload of a busy county like Mecklenburg means that more cases are scheduled that the Court has time for on the given date So your attorney might prepare for the case and if there is no time they have to refresh and prepare the next time it is scheduled This costs the parties more money in attorney fees

Place chicken and shrimp in shallow glass pan or large re-sealable plastic bag For marinade combine oil chutney teriyaki sauce and vinegar in small bowl with lid Pour half of marinade mixture over chicken and shrimp Cover or seal and marinate in refrigerator at least 3 hours preferably overnight Cover and refrigerate remaining marinade for basting

If using bamboo skewers soak in water at least l hour before using

To prepare kabobs Drain and discard marinade from meat Thread chicken yellow and red onion mango green pepper and shrimp alternately onto skewers Be sure to keep enough room at one end of each skewer for a ldquohandlerdquo

Coat grill grate with nonstick cooking spray Place skewers over medium coals and grill for 12 to 15 minutes or until meat is done and vegetables are tender Brush often with reserved marinade and turn skewers until cooked through If needed use spatula to gently loosen skewers before turning as they may stick

Arrange skewers on a platter and serve with Ginger Mango Dipping Sauce

Ginger Mango Dipping Sauce bull Makes about 1 cup

l mango - halved pitted amp scooped out of skin (about 1 C)14 C froz orange juice concentrate2 tsp grated fresh ginger root (or 12 teaspoon ground ginger)

Combine ingredients in electric blender and puree until smooth

Alternate preparationsOmit shrimp and use 1 12 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast cutting into 36 cubes and using 2 per skewer Instead of grilling place kabobs in broiler pan coated with nonstick cooking spray and

broil 3 inches from heat about 10 to 15 minutes or until done basting and turning as needed

Tell us about you I am a Colombian businesswoman

born and raised in the City of Medellin Because of my nationality I had the great opportunity to grow up sur-rounded by the world of coffee and the beauty of nature thatrsquos distinctly Colombian My grandparents had a farm where my father helped plant and cultivate coffee I donrsquot remember a time in my life where I wasnrsquot sur-rounded by coffee As a child I recall running around the coffee fields enjoy-ing the aroma of the coffee plants and freshly picked beans I didnrsquot know it at the time but coffee was literally making its mark on my senses which would serve me well many years later

Irsquom also number 11 of 12 children who were raised by hardworking entrepreneurial parents They were very strong people who helped me and my brothers and sisters form great values They taught us all at a very young age the importance of working toward goals in order to achieve greatness

How did you get startedSince I was young girl I had been

surrounded by coffee but I didnrsquot think beyond its aroma or texture because I simply knew it as a cultural element It wasnrsquot until 2008 when a coffee crisis directly affected my life that I began to think of it as a liveli-hood and much more than just a crop It was during this time that my family who had devoted their life to working

coffee fields lost the entire crop due to climate and erratic weather condi-tions This was the impetus for me to become more involved with my fam-ilyrsquos coffee production and also led me to work on the formalization and legalization of our coffee company Out of this very heartbreaking situa-tion I was able to find a silver lining because it pushed me to learn about this industry very quickly I read every-thing I could get my hands on about coffee and leaned on people who had been in the industry for years ndash namely my family I spoke with families coffee pickers mothers who lived on the coffee farms their children and truly learned how coffee goes from lsquofarm to cuprsquo The coffee industry term ndash farm to cup ndash is used by so many but for me itrsquos a way of life After seeing entire families affected by the coffee crisis of 2008 I wanted to ensure that if this happened again we could all survive and ride out the storm This is why I chose to get started in the coffee busi-ness and devote my professional life to Colombian coffee

Tell us about your programs and events for women

The El Socorro Family Farm where Cafe Perfecto is grown and picked is located in the city of Amagaacute Colombia Just outside of Medellin this town of 25000 is wholly dependent on coffee growing Entire families work on the farm as they plant tend to and harvest the coffee each year As a mother I


realize how difficult it is to leave your children in order to go to work so I wanted to create something for the mothers working on the El Socorro Family Farm It was a no-brainer to create a program where mothers could leave their children in good care while they were away on the mountainside picking coffee To that end there was an unused building on our property that wersquore in the process of convert-ing into a pre-school Wersquore expected to open the pre-school in late 2014 or early 2015 so mothers can rest easy knowing their babies and young chil-dren are being looked after right in the same area in which they work In

addition our coffee pickers will be able to get food supplies here at fairer price than traditional supermarkets According to numerous coffee studies the smallness of womenrsquos hands mean they handle coffee beans more care-fully and are better suited for picking With this is mind we want to ensure that our women coffee pickers have the best nutrition possible so that their quality of life in and out of the coffee fields are good

How have your prior career experi-ences prepared you for your journey in life

From a ver y young age I was


taught the value of hard work by being surrounded by adults who were committed to their families and profession I was from a very large family so we didnrsquot always have the resources for every-one to attend school In order to study you had to work to pay your own way This was the first lesson I learned when it came to pre-paring for a career Being consistent ded-icated and fighting for a better life are all qualities my parents and family have taught me Irsquom what you might call a ldquoserial entrepreneurrdquo since Irsquove started several successful businesses in Colombian and now in Charlotte NC with Cafeacute Perfecto

What would you most like our read-ers to know about your journey in business In life

The world of coffee is like life in that itrsquos full of cycles and stages Irsquove learned that to get a good crop yield you have to let a field rest and then start again elsewhere The same can be said of life You must continually reinvent yourself and plant your ideas in other places for them to grow You must see every crisis as a new opportunity Irsquove chosen to start a new life in the United States and call Charlotte NC my home

Irsquom looking forward to bringing my knowl-edge of coffee to the US Itrsquos clear to me that the top notch coffee roasters are here in the US so I hope to bridge some cultural gaps because coffee is so much more than a drink Itrsquos a connec-tor Itrsquos a conversation starter Itrsquos diversity in a cup

Who would you de-scribe as your men-tor(s) and why

My number one mentor is my mother She is one of the strongest people I know and worked tirelessly to raise 12 children All of my brothers and sisters are different but the one commonality we all share is tenacity This drive to always do better was instilled in me by my mother Itrsquos grat-ifying to see this same drive in the mothers who pick coffee at El Socorro Family Farm I see firsthand their daily struggles how hard they work for their families and how they want better for their children

I see my mother in them and they most definitely hold a special place in my heart

As I mentioned 2008 was a very dif-ficult year for coffee in Colombia It led me to recommit to the coffee business and refocus my attention on making the El Socorro Family Farm a success Fast forward to 2013 and once again Colombian coffee prices were in flux However my past experiences had pre-pared me for this so I knew this was just another cycle and another ldquorebirthrdquo was on the horizon This rebirth came in the form of Cafeacute Perfectorsquos creation and the business partnership created with my three other company partners in the United States The difficulties brought about in 2013 forced me to learn more about the US coffee market and put me on a path of discovery The number one discovery ndash learning that a new life awaited me in the US with coffee and Cafeacute Perfecto

If you could do one thing differently in your life what would that be

For me life is about continual improvement To do this I think you have to focus attention on helping others All too often we get caught up in our own ldquostuffrdquo to realize that by lending a hand to those in need ulti-mately helps us lead better lives If I could do one thing differently I would have taken on a greater social respon-sibility at a younger age I know expe-riences shape you so perhaps I needed to go through difficulties to appreciate

coffee as THE coffee in the United States Whatrsquos more I want my new business Cafeacute Perfecto to be rec-ognized as the industry standard when it comes to Colombian cof-feersquos excellent flavor and wonderful aroma It would be a dream come true for Cafeacute Perfectorsquos story to be brought to life as we highlight the people who are behind every coffee bean From a personal standpoint I merely want the best for my family Wersquore starting a new journey in the United States so this adventure will undoubtedly have its challenges but Irsquom ready

What do you wish you knew 20 years ago

I wish I had known that there is a whole world out there to discover I wish I had known that greatness is only achieved by getting out of your comfort zone Medellin is a wonder-fully beautiful city but today I know there is life beyond my city full of learn-ing experiences diversity and richness of cultures I will always be a ldquoPaisardquo (what people are called who are from Medellin) but I also like to think of myself as a citizen of the world In addi-tion I wish I had known more about coffee its history its production and what happened after it was picked Itrsquos amazing how much learning Irsquove done in the past year in regards to roasting and selling gourmet coffee

What is something people would be surprised to know about you

When I was traveling in China I ate silkworm cobra and scorpion Donrsquot ask me how it tasted

What inspires youSimply put women inspire me

I see on a daily basis how women

affect positive change in their fami-lies communities and workplace Irsquom so fortunate to have a mother who still today inspires me and work in an industry where women coffee pickers are revered and respected Daily affir-mations of what it is to be a woman ndash caring dedicated strong tenacious loving and committed ndash drive me to be a better person

What makes you laughAs a mother Irsquom amazed at how

children have the uncanny ability to make any situation comical Itrsquos prob-ably their innocence combined with a

ldquono filterrdquo mouth that makes me laugh Irsquod also add that my family and friends are quite the jokesters too If you happen to know any Colombians you

know were quick witted and always have a funny story to tell Growing up around laughter and humor are some of the greatest gifts

If you could stand up and defend anything what would it be

Irsquom a huge proponent of early child-hood education womenrsquos rights and teaching children the importance of helping others I believe that educa-tion is the key to all things One of my favorite quotes from Delores Huerta reads ldquoItrsquos important to teach children


that other people besides themselves are important and that the best thing they can do with their lives is to use them in the service of other peoplerdquo
