why you should never quit

Why You Should Never Quit I’m sure that many of us can agree that life is great or can be great depending on if we play our cards correctly. I’m also sure that we all can agree that from time to time things can get extremely overwhelming to the point that we feel like quitting. Now when I refer to quitting in this article, I’m talking about “giving up” in any way, shape or form in something that we must do or want to do in order to better ourselves or our situation. That was a mouthful, but take the time to read it well and understand. This week happened to be one of those weeks for me—as in it being overwhelming. I normally don’t mind taking on a heap of tasks at once, but this week was way too much—or so I thought. Between working full- time, managing this website, finishing up my book, and making music, I was this close to giving up some of my duties and only taking on what I could handle comfortably. I eventually got over it, and got everything done on time—but what’s important was the lessons I learned along the way. Here are a few things for you to consider before you follow through with your plan to quit, or give up. Everyone Thinks Of Quitting One of my regular customers I see at least once every two weeks or so happens to work as part of Disney’s Imagineers. He has to be one of the most hard-working individuals that I personally know. Disney is always coming out with newer attractions and technologies, but not many of us think about the work that goes into them. Many attractions take over a year or more to complete. And hundreds of employees are necessary just for one project, so you can probably imagine how much work goes into it. This man (I still don’t know his name) pretty much works all day and when he goes home at night, guess what? He’s still working. Day in and day out without a break, he said his first break in two years will be around Christmas time. Without ever even having time to eat a proper meal, he has become the epitome of hard work and passion to me. So after going through my whole quitting ordeal during the week, he walks through the door. The first thing I ask him—right after I said hello, of course—was “Do you ever feel like quitting?” I had to know. After all, he works much harder than I probably ever will—if he never felt like giving up then something must be terribly wrong with me! He

Why You Should Never QuitI’m sure that many of us can agree that life is great or can be great depending on if we play our cards correctly.

Between working full-time, managing this website, finishing up my book, and making music, I was this close to giving up some of my duties and only taking on what I could handle comfortably. I eventually got over it, and got everything done on time—but what’s important was the lessons I learned along the way. Here are a few things for you to consider before you follow through with your plan to quit, or give up.

Everyone Thinks Of QuittingOne of my regular customers I see at least once every two weeks or so happens to work as part of Disney’s Imagineers.

He immediately responded, “Of course, I actually felt like quitting a few times just this week alone.” Then he proceeded to drop more knowledge than I was prepared for. He continued, “Everyone thinks of quitting, it’s a natural part of growth. People often equate ‘thoughts of quitting’ with quitting, but they are not the same. It’s how you handle these thoughts that matter the most.” That was exactly what I needed to hear. It was as if the anti-quitting God had sent him in just to tell me that.

Everyone thinks of quitting; and a lot of the time, these thoughts never cease. They subside and arise from time to time, all we have to do is learn to manage them and never act on them. How can we manage them? We must learn the art of changing our perspective (which you can read about here) and staying motivated. Even the most successful man feels like quitting from time to time, it’s a natural thought we must all either get used to or learn to banish.

There Is Nothing That You Can’t DoI’m serious. Anything can be done if you continue to push through with a persevering mind. Do not quit. The saying goes “Don’t bite off more than you can chew,” but when things get overwhelming for me, I

try to remember Yogananda’s rendition on the saying: “I believe you should bite off more than you can chew, and then chew it!”

You Will Regret ItQuitting is one of those things that you will pretty much always regret. I know people who have quit their jobs and now they are struggling to find a new one and wishing they hadn’t quit in the first place. I know people who quit certain physical fitness commitments and when they grew too heavy or sick, they wished they had kept going when they had the chance. I know people who have dropped out of school thinking they would go back at a later time—but now can’t find the motivation to return.

What If Thomas Edison Had QuitThere are so many successful men and women who probably had far greater reasons to want to quit than you do, and they didn’t. What if Thomas Edison had quit in inventing the light bulb? In his early years, his teachers had told him that he was “too stupid to learn anything.” This would discourage most, but not him. He went on trying to invent the light bulb and actually went through 1000 unsuccessful attempts! Many of us would have quit after just 50 attempts! Personally, I would have drawn the line at 10 attempts. But still he did not give up, and eventually he ended up with the working light bulb we have today.

What if he had stopped at his thousandth unsuccessful attempt? Chances are many other inventors wouldn’t want to pick up where he left off as they would think it’s useless, and the world would have remained light-bulbless for quite some time longer. Of course there are many other wonderful examples of people who went through far too much trouble, but still did not quit—such as Henry Ford and Socrates. So when the thought of quitting arises in your mind, banish it with this knowledge and keep going!
