Why Go to Mass on Sunday?

Pope Francis met with groups of pilgrims and faithful from Italy and from all over the world on

December 13, 2017. The Pope reflected on the theme “Why Go to Mass on Sunday?” What do we gain

by participating in a Sunday Mass?

The Sunday celebration of the Eucharist is at the centre of the life of the Church (cf. Catechism of the

Catholic Church, 2177). We Christians go to Mass on Sundays to meet the Risen Lord, or rather to let

ourselves be met by Him, to listen to His word, be nourished at His table, and thus become Church, or

rather His mystical living Body in the world today.

We as a parish community is gathering for the Sunday Eucharistic celebration to “observe the Lord’s

Day holy” as Jesus commanded. On the altar, we also remember and re-present the death and

resurrection of Jesus by using liturgical prayers, signs and symbols, and we offer the one-time Calvary

sacrifice of Jesus to our Heavenly Father for the remission of our sins.

Eucharist is the highest rank of prayer. St. Peter Juliyan Eymard says “the Holy Eucharist is like a divine

store house filled with every virtue; God has placed it in the world so that everyone may draw from it”.

We receive many blessings during each Holy Mass by our active participation in the Eucharistic

celebration. People who think that participation in the Holy Mass is a waste, fail to understand the power

of the Eucharistic. Through every Eucharistic celebration,

1) We praise and worship God by singing and by responding to the prayers by the priest.

2) We ask God’s pardon and forgiveness for our sins.

3) We thank God for all the blessings received during the course of the past week.

4) We listen to God’s words in the three Scripture readings and in the homily preached by the priest.

5) We present our needs and petitions for the new week before God on the altar at the intercessory

prayers.

6) We surrender and offer our lives and all our activities to God during the offertory, accepting Jesus as

our personal Lord and Saviour and surrendering our lives to Him with repentant hearts.

7) We recharge our spiritual batteries, gain spiritual nourishment and deepen our personal relationship

with Jesus by sacramentally receiving his resurrected Body and Blood in Holy Communion.

There are Christian communities that, unfortunately, cannot enjoy Mass every Sunday. We are

privileged to attend the mass every Sunday. For St. John Paul II, “from the Eucharist comes strength to

live the Christian life and zeal to share that life with others.” Let us make it a chance to experience the

power of Eucharist and share it with others.

With sincere Prayers and Blessings,

Fr.Geo Francis MCBS
