Opening and Closing Hymn: Rain Down

Refrain: Rain down, rain down,

rain down your love on your people.

Rain down, rain down,

rain down your love, God of life.

1. Faithful and true is the word of our God.

All of God’s works are so worthy of trust.

God’s mercy falls on the just and the right;

full of God’s love is the earth. (Refrain)

2. We who revere and find hope in our God

live in the kindness and joy of God’s wing.

God will protect us

rom darkness and death;

God will not leave us to starve. (Refrain)

3. God of creation, we long for your truth;

you are the water of life that we thirst.

Grant that your love and your peace

touch our hearts,

all of our hope lies in you. (Refrain)

Text: Based on Psalm 33: Jaime Cortez, b. 1963 Tune: Jaime

Cortez, b. 1963; acc. by Craig S, Kingsbury, b. 1952 © 1991, Jaime

Cortez. Published by OCP.

Psalm Refrain:

The Lord gave them bread from heaven.

Preparation of Gifts: I Am the Bread of Life

1. I am the Bread of life.

You who come to me shall not hunger;

and who believe in me shall not thirst.

No one can come to me

unless the Father beckons. (Refrain)

Refrain: And I will raise you up,

and I will raise you up,

and I will raise you up

on the last day.

2. The bread that I will give

is my flesh for the life of the world,

and if you eat of this bread,

you shall live for ever,

you shall live for ever. (Refrain)

3. Unless you eat

of the flesh of the Son of Man

and drink of his blood,

and drink of his blood,

you shall not have life within you. (Refrain)

18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME—AUGUST 1, 2021

4. I am the Resurrection,

I am the life.

If you believe in me,

even though you die,

you shall live for ever. (Refrain)

5. Yes, Lord, we believe

that you are the Christ,

the Son of God,

Who has come

into the world. (Refrain)

Communion Hymn: Gift of Finest Wheat

Refrain: You satisfy the hungry heart

With gift of finest wheat;

Come give to us, O saving Lord,

The bread of life to eat.

1. As when the shepherd calls his sheep,

They know and heed his voice;

So when you call your fam'ly, Lord,

We follow and rejoice. (Refrain)

2. With joyful lips we sing to you

Our praise and gratitude,

That you should count us worthy, Lord,

To share this heav'nly food. (Refrain)

3. Is not the cup we bless and share

The blood of Christ outpoured?

Do not one cup, one loaf, declare

Our oneness in the Lord? (Refrain)

4. The myst'ry of your presence, Lord,

No mortal tongue can tell:

Whom all the world cannot contain

Comes in our hearts to dwell. (Refrain)

5. You give yourself to us, O Lord;

Then selfless let us be,

To serve each other in your name

In truth and charity. (Refrain)

MASS INTENTIONS

JULY 31—AUGUST 8, 2021

OBLIGATION TO ATTEND MASS

REINSTATED

Bishop David A. Zubik is overjoyed to join all

Catholic bishops of Pennsylvania in reinstating

the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and

Holy Days, starting Sunday, August 15, 2021. You

may go to our website to read Bishop Zubik’s

full statement.

HOSPITALITY MINISTRY

Hospitality Ministry invites all

individuals, couples and families to

share the service of greeting at the

church doors, seating those who

need assistance, and collecting donations

during the offertory. If you have helped in the

past, are coming to a particular Mass, or would

like to participate in the community, please

contact Donna Zelt at 412-381-0212 X112, or

[email protected]. We are in

need of two additional people at all Masses!

Many the gift, many the people,

many the hearts that yearn to belong.

Let us be servants to one another

making your kingdom come.

Song lyrics by Bernadette Farrel

HOMEBOUND VISITS

We are reaching out to homebound members

who would like to receive the Eucharist and pray

with a fellow parishioner. Please contact the

parish office at 412-481-8380 or 412-381-0212.

Leave your name, address, and phone for them

to contact the EM leader.

YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

Hey Young Adults! As we

prepare for another year of

Young Adult Ministry, we want to

know what kind of events you

want to see. Social Justice?

Scripture study? Fellowship?

Communal Prayer? Book studies?

We want to hear what suggestions and ideas

you have for the upcoming year. Send us an

email at [email protected], or send us

a message on Facebook at Mary, Queen of

Peace Young Adult Ministry

ASK PROSPER

What is a relic? I saw some of them on the altar at St. Adalbert Church.

Prosper: Relics are the people who have been coming to mass for so long that they

actually know when It’s time to sit, kneel and stand. Just kidding! Seriously, this is a

great question so I decided to ask Fred. He is a sacristan and lector, and was nice

enough to show the relics to me. Relics are anything from or associated with a Saint. Just like our

parents keep our baby shoes, or you may have your grandma’s hanky, these things help us to remember

those who came before us. Relics remind us of the holiness of the saint. In Christianity we feel that

veneration or respect for these objects bring us into closer communion with the saint. These treasures

bring to mind how these people who proceeded us gave so selflessly and generously. Relics inspire us to

ask for the prayers of that saint and with God’s help to live the same kind of God filled life. There are a lot

of relics at St. Adalbert Church including St. Roch and St. Francis. They have been collected from all seven

previous South Side parishes. If you are aware of the relics at St. Mary of the Mount, let me know. I will be

happy to let the rest of our family know. Don’t worry, I’m a smart dog, I will remember,

What ever happened to Purgatory? It seems like we never hear about it anymore.

PROSPER: I asked Fr. Daniel and he said “I pray to ‘go to’ purgatory. For if we experience purgatory, we

are assured of Heaven. Amen!” In our culture it seems like very often we would rather take the easy way

out and go straight to heaven. Even in the funeral liturgies we are reminded that those who have died

may still require purification of their sins and the consequence of sin, and we ought to pray and help our

loved ones through prayer and works of penance on their behalf. Purgatory can be explained as a

supreme example of God’s infinite mercy and forgiveness. It is a gift from God removing all sin and

blemish. This is the justice aspect of God’s infinite love. We here on earth need to “embrace” all those

souls in Purgatory and pray for their purification and bring them into complete unification with God. The

Catechism of the Catholic Church states it this way. “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still

imperfectly purified, are still indeed assured of their eternal salvation. After death they undergo

purification (purgatory) so to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven”. If you want more

information visit the website of Susan Tassone. She is a warrior for all the souls in Purgatory. What a

wonderful, faith filled ministry, and a great way for us to pray for those we have lost. Amen.

SELAH: PAUSE AND REFLECT

In the book of Psalms, the word “selah” is often

used in line breaks. More than a line break,

“selah” connotes an invitation to stop, listen to

God and reflect. It’s an opportunity to look

contemplatively at what is before us

When it comes to God we can’t run out

of second chances...only time.

-Robin Jones Gunn
