Who uses Moodle?Moodle is the most widely used learning management system in the world. There are currently 80 million registered users worldwide that we know of and potentially a few more millions are accessing Moodle.

In Australia, a large number of leading public and private schools (e.g. Belmont College and St Paul Xavier) and universities (e.g. University of Adelaide and UNSW) are also delivering collaborative and innovative education through Moodle.

In the USA alone, Moodle holds the second largest market share and is used not only in the education sector but also the US Defence Force for learning and collaborating.

Today Moodle is used by organisations of all types and sizes - businesses, charities and the public sector.

Other well known global users of Moodle? The UK Government, Open Universities, World Vision, TAFE, United Nations, Dubai’s oil and gas sectors, Columbia College, NAKOS (emergency services in Norway) - just to name a few out of the millions.

Not a bad achievement for an Australian (Perth based) developed, grown, run and owned company.

Why do 80 million people and organisations worldwide use Moodle? What makes Moodle different?

It has been developed by the world’s best educators, for educators, so that teaching and learning in the online environment works successfully for teachers and students.

In short, people who are passionate about delivering first class education are making sure that the future of education technology is bright and innovative.

In the online world, this translates to a number of tools (or plugins) that are all user-friendly, highly configurable (flexible) and feature-rich. This makes Moodle adaptable to the customised needs of every educator, his/her students and/or any organisation.

Plus, because Moodle is open source, it is supported by a global community of developers. Meaning the best of the very best technical minds are always working together to make Moodle bigger and better.

What is Moodle? A learning management system that connects students and educators around the world in the online environment.

Moodle provides a central space online, where students and staff can collaborate, create content and access a set of tools and worldwide resources anytime, anywhere.

1970’s in the Western Australian desert, Moodle CEO and founder, Martin Dougiamas, studied through school of the air and materials delivered by aeroplanes.

1990s 2008

Martin’s childhood experience prepared him to create an internet-based learning platform.

In 2008 Dougiamas was the winner of the Google-O’Reilly Open Source Award in the Education Enabler category.

In 2004 Dougiamas was described by Brent Simpson as “ the Linus Torvalds of the LMS world and his software is the Linux of this software.”

At Curtin University, Martin begins creating Moodle for his Phd research.
