Why the Civil War Broke Out

• Tension grew between the North and the South

• South succeeded

• South acted at Fort Sumter

• Brother against brother• Father against son• Pressure on women in the Family

The South's Role in the War

• First to act at Fort Sumter• Won many of the first battles• Attacked union property• Well trained leaders

Turning Point in the War

• Battle of Gettysburg• Began July 1, 1863• Other Battles won at same time• Union Victories at two key sites

Gettysburg

• Union had higher ground• Won many single battles over three days• Defeated strong charges• Last confederate attack on Union ground
