[ABOUT ME]

I’m Chris. I enjoy creating concepts that make people look at aspects of life differently. I enjoy the whole process of design and the way in which your work will always become something

unique and a fascinating twist on the initial brief.

I am a 21 year old final year student currently studying Interior and Spatial Design at Edinburgh Napier University and finishing off my final year major project specialising in an

Urbanism development.

I am currently a Design Consultant for Sofa Workshop. Creating exciting new sofas for clients room schemes using

high end fabric manufactures from around the UK.

I am a social extrovert who loves meeting new people and enjoy a good natter.

‘The Healthy Diet’

This project aims to create a unique educational experience that extends from the classroom to the playground. The experience itself is to create a learning of our planet thought the power of horticulture and helping children understand how fun growing and healthy eating can be and the satisfaction from growing your own food.

The design solution created is a two tier lab with a learning centre underneath with a layer of growing planers on the top level. The benefit of the planters is they can be made as long as you want as they are individual concrete formed units. Therefore more herbs, fruit, vegetables and trees can be grown to create a raised level growing plantation

The lab will become a bloom of growth and will become a natural social and learning space within the school playground. Allowing for kids to become one with what their food is and where it comes from.

‘Natter Box’

The Brief for this project aimed to establish the definition of Heritage and enhance this to better improve the lives of people today.

Therefore by enhancing on the notion of intangible heritage through the experience

of people in our cities, towns and rural areas, will allow for these memories to be valued just as much as the tangible

heritage sites in our environment.

Natter Box is a temporary intervention that will be placed in the centre point of a town or city to capture the stories of the people

who live in or know the place that the intervention is in. Natter Box is constructed from old cargo units to enable easy set-up

and take-down as well as a great way of storing the memories within it while they are digitally uploaded onto the Natter box

Website.

A main element to the proposal is the light boxes that contain a small recording device that activate through touch. It records a story of the person and sends it to the Natter Box server that will display the recording along with the location online. Creating an archive of stories of intangible heritage online for everyone to listen to and compare with many other stories online.

Page 9: Chris Wilson Design Portfolio

Natter Box is made to fit into any environment. Be it urban landscape or rural space. It is a focal gathering point for people to connect with and record their stories about their lives within

the place they live.

Suspended Public SpacePublic Space Design

‘The Western Approach Road’

This Brief aims to challenge the existence of public space and explore creative ways to adapt the growth of public space within

the dense urban environment.

The resolution explored was to create a sus-pended green space over an area known for its dense traffic and very Vehicle orientated

Urban design. Therefore by suspending a floating green space will not only give a

sense of levels in the space, it will cause a balancing of traffic from both vehicle and

pedestrian. The placing of this space on the Western Approach Road will also become a market space to join the other three market

spaces that exist within Edinburgh but placed to cause a balance of market area

across Edinburgh.

The Western Approach Road is heavily used by public transport as well as all types of road users. It also has a

small cross over passage for pedestrians and this will be my key point of investigation to create a new public space

ton revitalise the types of spaces that Edinburgh has.

Page 12: Chris Wilson Design Portfolio

This new connection and public space is made to host individual and group meeting space as well as being a new way for business to connect with the public as it is located in a business district of Edinburgh.

Commercial Space Design

‘Barnton Quarry’

This brief was to bring life back into a building that currently has no purpose or use. Barnton Quarry is a derelict building

that was originally used as a military bunker back in World War II. It was a

Scottish strong hold and vital connection to the army fighting against the opposition

through its telecommunication links.

Therefore a new use will be creating a multi-use space that will enable a variety of businesses to inhabit and use as a meeting

and working space within a location that has a very much secret location.

Quarry Rennovation[4]

Page 15: Chris Wilson Design Portfolio

This unique underground working space allows an open plan yet private space to be created through the play of levels and amount of light brought

through the rock face behind the bunker. By cutting through sections of the bunker allows a balance of secrecy due to the classic history of the

building and a light and airy office layout and space.

Residential Space Design

‘Loch Corusik Crannog’

A Cranogg is an historic dwelling located on a body of water or marsh land to protect the

owner from dangers on land.

Taking this concept, the brief was to develop an modern day Cranogg that

can be used to support life and become a relaxation sanctuary.

This Cranogg is located just off the isle of Skye and is in a tranquil remote area to bring both the original concept of what

a cranogg is and what modern day living involves.

Crannog Retreat[5]

Page 17: Chris Wilson Design Portfolio
Page 18: Chris Wilson Design Portfolio

This retreat plays with the ideal of classic crannog living from a historic time. With a modern twist in living away from society. The location also gives creates a notion of being free and unseen from modern day society.

The Unseen

Urbanism

‘Edinburgh CCTV’

This project looks at how CCTV is taking over our urban space. Through looking at Edinburgh as the location of choice. This

project investigates the existence of seen space and finding out if there are spaces

that are not seen by these cameras.

Through looking at the urban fabric, the project leads on to celebrate the

fragmented spaces and design an outcome to celebrate unseen space and creating

an event that will make the surveyed becoming the surveyors.

[6]

Page 20: Chris Wilson Design Portfolio

A first point of call was to investigate the location of all the CCTV cameras across Edinburgh. the series of lines all show the digital connection between all of the CCTV cameras.

THE UNSEEN

Cockburn Street is going to be the main focus of the project outcome. This street sits in the city centre. It also is right next to the Edinburgh City Chambers where they monitor all CCTV footage live making this the perfect site for further investigation.

Cockburn Street is going to be the main focus of the project outcome. This street sits in the city centre. It also is right next to the Edinburgh City Chambers where they monitor all CCTV footage live making this the perfect site for further investigation.

Cockburn Street is blurred space in terms of urban surveillance. It contains potential space that will enable for a design solution to be installed to celebrate

this factor. This space can be filled with people who will become off the grid and are able to be involved in a unique unseen event to take place.
