The John Folan Page Hello again everyone,

As you all probably know by now, it fell on me this year to organise the WestRun, and am I glad it’s over. It’s a huge task and I really did not know what I had taken on. All I can say is ‘well done’ to those who did it all in the previous years. We had a good weekend by all accounts and a wonderful function on Saturday night at which we raised just over €1,500 for the Share-a-Dream founda-tion for sick and disabled children. That was for me the best part of the whole weekend. I am truly grateful to those who donated prizes for this, you guys know who you are, so thanks from me and the peo-ple at Share-a-Dream…… it made my weekend. And while I am at it, I must thank those who gave me immense support and help to or-ganise this, Joe O’Neill, Larry Murphy and Ray O’Donoghue, thanks a million, lads. Its great to know that when someone says they will do something, you know it will be done. We are a large club by any standards, but why don’t we see more of you guys out on events. This is our showcase event and it would be nice to see more of you out. Can’t blame the weather surely!! We seem to be lucky with that. So come on, get the polish out and take that old gal for a run now and then. This year every entrant got an engraved keyring and a brass plaque. There are some keyrings left and if anybody wants one, they can be purchased from the club at €5.00 each. It’s a mini brake disk with WVVMC 2004 engraved on it. There are also some window stickers and plaques left and they are available at €2.00 each. Con-tact me for any of the above. I also want to thank my daughter, Tasmin for all the help she gave me on the run up to the event and along with Suzanne on the day, they manned the check-in desk with-out a hitch. Thanks a lot you two…. you were great. Well that’s all from me. Don’t forget our AGM soon…. if there are things you don’t like about how things are done, this is where you make your voice heard. Try to attend. ‘Till next time ,

Safe driving, John

Other Recent Events

See pages 12, 13, 14 and 15 for a full list of current members. Please notify the Membership Director, Stephen Coyle (Tel.: 065-6822712), of any errors or omissions. We would particularly like to have correct addresses and phone numbers for all members.

Vintage cars parked at the Gort Show and (right) WVVMC member, John Nelly from Castletaylor, Ardrahan pictured with his 1966 Ford Cortina Mk. 1 also at the Gort Show.

Over 30 cars and tractors took part in a sponsored run “Around the Lakes” for the bene-fit of Women’s Aid on the morning of the Gort Show. This was part of a fundraising effort by Lorraine Linnane, daughter of our member Francis. Lorraine, who has done wonderful work for this voluntary organisation, has now met her target of €3,000 from the sponsored run and other fundraising events and she wishes to thank all who took part in the run.

The vehicles departed from Church Street at 11.00am with the cars, from both Galway and Clare clubs, taking the scenic route around beautiful Lough Graney in Co. Clare and the tractors taking the shorter, but equally scenic route around Lough Cutra, which is just outside Gort.

On their return to the town, they all paraded to Gort Show where they took part in the static display and were joined by further vintage cars, tractors and static machinery. A meal was provided for each driver as well as a momento of the day, both with the compliments of Gort Show Company. A very enjoyable day was had by all.

A number of club members, mainly the same people all the time, attended and enjoyed a number of events around the coun-try during the past few months. On the Sunday of WestRun 2004 many members made their way to a very fine static dis-play in Mountbellew. The last weekend in August saw some members at the Midlands Vintage weekend in Athlone. Sep-tember 5th had a clash of events with some cars heading for Williamstown Vintage Day and others going to a Vintage dis-play in Dysart. There was a very big turnout at the Galway Home and Motor Show which was held in Ballybrit on Sep-tember 10th to 12th. Frank Mullan, the organiser of the vintage display, wishes to thank all those who participated. Finally, last Sunday saw some members in Clare for the Clare Autumn Run.

The Autumn Run to Killala by Ray O’Donoghue

Our Autumn run this year takes us to Killala …. we have been invited by Mr. Sean Hannick from the local Killala Community Council, who is also chairman of the Council for the West. The run is a two-day event taking place on the Saturday and Sunday, October 2nd and 3rd. It is planned to leave Oranmore by 10.00am and including a short break in Foxford to reach Killala by 1.30pm, then proceed along the North Mayo coastline visiting the internationally acclaimed Céide fields and having lunch there, and returning to Killala by 6.00pm for dinner and a social evening starting at 8.00pm. The Céide fields are located 20 miles from Ballina (13 miles from Killala) at near Belderrig, Ballycastle. They represent the oldest enclosed farmland discovered in the Western world (older than the Egyptian Pyramids) at about 5,000 years. They were discovered in the early 1980's and are part of an on-going archaeological investigation. In 1993, a visitors centre was opened at the site and has attracted close to 200,000 visitors to view the historic landscape and the magnificent Céide cliffs and Dún Briste sea stack. A number of route options are being discussed for the Sunday and the final selection will be subject to weather conditions. Pre-booking is essential for this run and you are reminded to return your entries immediately to Ray O’Donoghue so that the necessary arrangements can be put in place.

the Rolls Royce RB211 Jumbo jet engines. From there I moved on to Schiphol Airport in Am-sterdam

working as a foreman to a group of aircraft maintenance contractors mostly on Jumbo’s and DC9’s. I came back to the UK and joined the Gulf Racing Team based in Slough were I was a travelling Fabri-cator/Mechanic, I arrived just as they finished racing the 911 Porsche and were embarking on building the Gulf Mirages for use in long distance sports car racing and Le Mans events.

From there it was the jump to Formula 1 with a start in the Copersucar Team with Wilson Fittipaldi, later joined by Emerson Fittipaldi, after a couple of seasons with that outfit enough was enough and I left to work in a local Mercedes garage, ah the peace!

But still keen to pursue F1 I noticed an add for staff at Williams F1 and applied in early 1978. I joined the team as First mechanic and took over as Chief Mechanic in late 1978, the FW06 had scored a few points that year, unfortunately reliability was not its strong point! 1979 saw the FW07, basically a copy of Chapmans Lotus 72 but better! Williams nearly won the Championship in that year only to miss out due to a few silly reliability problems and some driver errors.

After 25 years at Williams and in 2002 we left the UK and moved to Portlaoise, my wife has many close relatives in the Kildare area and we have been visitors to Ireland for many many years, so we are now

Jacques Demion – Saumur Car Club

I missed the West Run this year – due to bad plan-ning on my part! After sorting out holiday ar-rangements with my good wife Peggy, which in-cluded for the first time a check of school terms, I booked the ferry to France for a two week holiday in the month of July. I did this early in the year to be sure of a good deal and to get the weeks re-quired – it was subsequent to this that I realised I would be gone for the West Run.

Anyway, as part of the preparations for the club’s trip to France in September, I was in contact with Jacques Demion of the Saumur Car Club and told him that we were heading over ourselves. Jacques Demion had originally contacted me just over three years ago, when the Saumur club made their way to Galway and joined us on the Meals after Wheels run. That particular run had a gallic slant to it with Citroen DS’s, Peugeots and Simcas in-cluded. As part of our holiday, Jacques insisted that we called to them.

Jacques and his wife Suzanne live about 10 km north of Saumur just outside of a village called Vivy which is about the size of Clarinbridge. There they treated us to a barbeque, which was supplemented with a number of courses – aperi-tifs, wines, and cheeses. He then showed me his workshops, which included a 1925 Peugeot voi-terette, a 1935 Simca 5 – the current project, a 1967 Peugeot 204 cabriolet and the Citreon DS that he drove to Galway. We got the 1925 Peu-geot started and brought it out for a spin around the surrounding area.

After a trip to the vineyards and with children getting tired, it was time to say our goodbyes to the Demions and head back to the resort. Both Jacques and Suzanne could not do enough for us during our visit, and we left with the impression that the travellers in September are in for a treat when they visit the Loire valley.

The highlight of the year, from a club point of view, is of course our annual rally (WestRun) which this year was held during the weekend of 23rd to 25th of July. The run director was John Folan, who was assisted by a small sub-committee - all volunteers and all doing their best to ensure a good and enjoyable programme whilst at the same time not letting costs spiral out of control. This year some new ideas were put to the test which I think were very successful. The weekend started with the static display at Spanish Arch. This was our second year to use this great venue which provides such a lovely setting and with excellent access. Some 87 cars were on display and with good weather and some lively background music we had a great showpiece. Members, visitors and public enjoyed the occasion and comment was very good. The pre-rally reception in the Corrib Southern Hotel on the Friday night was very well attended with complimentary Guinness, finger food, good music and dancing, and of course good company making for an enjoyable evening. Saturday morning saw the run itself start at the Corrib and go to Ballinasloe at a nice leisurely pace. The hard working group in Ballinasloe had organised ample parking on two streets which had been reserved for us. A choice of establishments offered great food and the traditional music which was played over the public address system gave the whole occasion quite a lift. This year 182 cars participated, which is a great entry leaving it one of the largest runs in the country.

The gala dinner dance in the Corrib Great Southern Hotel was once more very well attended with last year’s numbers well exceeded. The programme for the evening was well streamlined and this change has received very favourable comment. The music was supplied by the very popular Michael O’Brien band from Ennis who kept the dancefloor full well into the small hours. The Mayor of Galway, Ms. Catherine Connolly, was Guest of Honour for the evening and the run prizes were presented to the winners by Ernst Wijnekus and the club president, Bill Fennell. Larry Murphy was M.C. for the evening.

WestRun 2004 continued

On the night, a raffle was held to raise some funds for the Share-a-Dream Foundation. All prizes were sponsored and a total of €1503 was collected. This year, it was decided to hold a farewell party on the Sunday morning in the Corrib hotel. This ran for three hours with music, singing and dancing being provided by some of those taking part in the weekend event, followed by a light lunch before departure. It was really an experiment which was much enjoyed and appreciated by the large crowd which turned up. We all owe a great debt of gratitude to the run director, John Folan and his committee, our main sponsor, Top Part, and all the other sponsors who made this event possible. I do, of course, accept that some people may have different views on the weekend and the committee would welcome these views or sugges-tions. Please contact any committee member.
