KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — The bigsmile on Manistee native Army Lt. Col.Gary Kuczynski’s face said it all whenMichigan Sen. Carl Levin (D, Mich.),who heads up the Senate Armed ForcesCommittee, presented him with theDefense Meritorious Service Medal for hisservice in Afghanistan with NATO forces.

It was the smile of a soldier who per-ormed his duties well in a stressful envi-onment, but more importantly, it camerom an Army officer who sees the biggericture on what is being accomplished inhat country through a coalition effort of

any countries.Kuczynski, a 22-year veteran of the

rmy, and an infantry officer serving outf the 11th Armored Cavalry Regimentas honored by Levin, on Saturday at

he NATO Training Mission-Afghanistaneadquarters in Camp Eggers in Kabul,fghanistan. The awarduczynski was given by evin is the third highest

edal that is awarded by theepartment of Defense andommends him for his ser-ice over the past year with ATO forces in Afghanistan.

He is the son of Dick nd Caroline Kuczynski of anistee, and they received

n e-mail from Gary’s com-anding officer Lt. Gen.illiam B. Caldwell, who

eads up the NATO forcesn Afghanistan, in regardso that presentation. In that-mail, Caldwell praised theob their son has done infghanistan during the pastear. He also included pictures of Gary eceiving the medal from Sen. Levin.

“I wanted to send you a personal noteo share some photos of Gary meeting andpeaking with Sen. Levin earlier today,”rote Caldwell. “The senator actually

warded Gary the Defense Meritoriouservice Medal in recognition of Gary’semarkable work over the past year. Sen.evin couldn’t stop speaking about how uch it meant to him to personally pres-

nt Gary’s award.“Just wanted to reassure you Gary

is doing a great job here, and tell youhe is an incredible inspiration. He has

been performing one of the most criti-cal missions needed here in

Afghanistan working withour communications doctor-

ate helping to tell the story of the work being done herein NATO Training Mission-

Afghanistan.“Gary made a significant

impact here with his leader-ship and desire to make adifference every day. NATOTraining Mission-Afghanistanhas achieved some significantprogress this past year indeveloping and training of the Afghan National Security Force. Gary was a huge partof that and we thank him forhis service here.”

Caldwell praisedKuczynski’s parents for the support they have given their son during his deploy-ment.

“Thank you for supporting Gary throughout his deployment and in hisdesire to serve our country throughout hismultiple combat deployments especially here in Afghanistan,” wrote Caldwell. “Weknow it is an incredible sacrifice you bothare making, and trust the homecoming will

Love INC of Manisteeset out to raise $60,000in 60 days. Reduced fund-ing in contracts for theManistee & Benzie Family Life Centers, the 45 per-cent increase in calls forhelp, and the need forlarger office and donationspace, are just a few of themany reasons the lofty goal was set by the LoveINC board and executivedirector.

Love INC was pleasedto be $10,000 over theirtarget of $31,000 in

December, but was a bitconcerned that January might be tougher untilthey received a call fromCallesen & Associates whohad a $5,000 matching

donation ready if Love INC were able to raise $5,000more in January. “Thatput excitement in ourhearts!” said Robin Paulus,“and we are nearing the$5,000 match mark.”

His father, Richard, is just as proud of his son and what he has accomplishedin his military career.

“He is doing a good job,and he has been to a lot of different places that have

been interesting for himand for us,” said Richard.“He was in Korea stationed

on the DMZ (demilitarizedzone) where he stayedand did an extra tour. He

was the last commanderof American troops beforeit was turned over to theSouth Koreans, and he alsodid a tour of the combatzone in Iraq (where hereceived a bronze star).”

The senior Kuczynskisaid that he and his wife

were touched by the factthat General WilliamCaldwell took the time tosend them a personal e-

mail about their son.“I answered him back,and he sent anotherresponse back to me as

well,” said Richard.The Army Lt. Colonel

said that he is looking forward to returning to theManistee area when he getssome leave time.

“First thing I am goingto do is hug my parents,”said Kuczynski. “My parentsare tremendous supportersof myself, and of those whoserve. They are absolutely

believers in all of us, and in what we are doing. They’restrength; they’re a shoulder

when things get tough, and when you’re far away thatdeserves a big hug.”

The presentation by Levin is something thatKuczynski said was madethe event even more specialto him.

“To have Sen. Levinpin the award on, it was agreat way to cap it off,” saidKuczynski of his time in

Afghanistan. “You’re proudto be a soldier to have this

happen, and you’re proudto be from the State of Michigan to have your sen-ator pin this on. It’s a very high award and this meansa lot.”

Some of his dutiesin Afghanistan centeredaround what NATO and 40countries are attempting toachieve in that country by growing the Afghan secu-rity forces. It is work thatKuczynski said made a dif-ference in that country.

“To be part of an effort by more than 40 countriesthat are working to grow the Afghan army, police andair force, the AfghanistanNational Security Force isreally a high watermark,”said Kuczynski. “Working

with the coalition, working with sister services, workinin this environment is not

just an individual effort.”It is an effort that thou-

sands of Americans fromacross the country and

world are doing on a daily basis to make the worldsafer place for everyone.
