    Fundraising underway forlighthouse restoration project

    BYKEN GRABOWSKI

    ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Last week when members of the com-unity gathered at the Fifth Avenue

each house to commemorate the acquisi-ion of the north pierhead lighthouse, itas the culmination of the first step of

he process in restoring this famous localandmark to its past grandeur.

It took years to accomplish that taskhrough a myriad of governmental redape and hurdles. However, officials at the

anistee County Historical Museum andhe City of Manistee are now turning theirttention to the next phase. That phaseill include the need to raise $150,000

or the restoration and preservation pro-ess.

Former Manistee County Historicaluseum director Steve Harold said

hey have been pleased with the initialesponse from the public to the project.e said they have several fundraisers in

he works, and have been selling T-shirtsnd shopping bags with the logo of the

ighthouse on it at the farmers market. We anticipate a photo contest, and

e have the T-shirts and shopping bagsight now, said Harold. We started outith 100 T-shirts and we sold them outetween the transfer ceremony, and the

armers market.Harold said they will continue to sell

he T-shirts on Saturday mornings athe Farmers Market, and they also havenvelopes available at the museum foreople wishing to make a cash donations.hey can send them to the Im a light-ouse keeper campaign c/o the Manistee

Historical Museum at 425 River St,Manistee, MI 49660.

The former museum director pointedout that they have several other avenuesthey are looking at for acquiring funds forthis project.

It will take a team effort, and BobBrook is working extensively with uson it, said Harold. We are looking atreceiving pledges and we also are apply-ing for grants that are out there, as Iam relatively confident of three differ-ent grants. The Michigan License plates

with the lighthouses on them continuallyprovide grant money for lighthouses andthere is federal transportation funds thatI think comes from the gasoline tax where

we could apply.Harold pointed out that both are

matching grants, so the more money theycan put up, the greater the amount thatmight get in return. He said they are look-ing at all options at this point in time,

because they would like to get the projectup and running as soon as possible.

According to Harold, one of the rea-

sons the lighthouse is rusting so bad rightnow is because it hasnt been properlypainted in the past. He said that is some-thing they plan to address when theypaint it.

The reason it is rusting now is thegovernment passed an environmentallaw 30 years ago that said they couldntcontribute to the contamination, saidHarold. Consequently, they have paintedit quite a number of times in the last 30

years, but they have never primed it,

Sea lamprey control planned for Little Manistee RiverU.S. Fish and Wildlife

Service personnel will applylampricides to the LittleManistee River system inLake and Manistee countiesto kill sea lamprey larvaeburrowed in the stream bot-tom.

The applications will beconducted between July 19

and July 28 in accordancewith State of Michigan per-mits. Tentatively, treatmentof the Little Manistee Riversystem will begin on Friday,July 22. Applications will becomplete in about 72 hours. The application dates are ten-tative and may be changedbased upon local weather orstream conditions near the

    time of treatment.Sea lamprey larvae

live in certain Great Lakestributaries and transform toparasitic adults that migrateto the Great Lakes and killfish. Failure to kill the larvaein streams would result insignificant damage to theGreat Lakes fishery. Infested

tributaries must be treatedevery three to five years withlampricides to control sealamprey populations.

The U. S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency andHealth Canada PestManagement Regulatory

Agency have reviewedhuman health and environ-mental safety data for lam-

pricides and in 2003, con-cluded that the lampricides(Lampricide and Bayluscide)pose no unreasonable riskto the general populationand the environment whenapplied at concentrationsnecessary to control larvalsea lampreys.

    However, as with any

pesticide, the public isadvised to use discretion andminimize unnecessary expo-sure. Lampricides are selec-tively toxic to sea lampreys,

but a few fish, insect, andbroadleaf plants are sensitive.

Persons confining baitfish or other organisms instream water are advisedto use an alternate water

source because lampricidesmay cause mortality amongaquatic organisms stressed

by crowding and handling.Agricultural irrigation mustbe suspended for 24 hours, during and following treat-ment.

Extensive preparationsare required for a safe and

effective stream treatment.Prior to treatment, personnelcollect data on stream waterchemistry and discharge. Inaddition, they may conducton-site toxicity tests withlampricides and stream flowstudies with dyes that cause

stream water to appear redor green.

Lampricides are care-fully metered into the streamfor approximately 12 hours, and continually analyzedat predetermined sites toassure that proper concen-trations are maintained asthe lampricides are carried

downstream. Applicators aretrained and are certified by

Michigan regulatory agenciesfor aquatic applications ofpesticides.

Additional informationabout sea lampreys and sealamprey control is avail-able online at www.glfc.org. TTY users may reachthe Marquette or LudingtonBiological Stations through

the Michigan State RelayService at (800) 649-3777.

scraped it, or prepped thesurface with a wire brush. So, for 30 years, they wereessentially painting therust.

None of us would eventhink of doing that with

    our house.Right now the main

focus is the lighthousebuilding itself. When theyget sufficient funding ofabout $100,000 Haroldsaid they plan to start thepainting process. That willrequire the removal ofthe hazardous materialslike the lead paint, sealingof the structure, and thepainting with long lastinghigh quality paint.

One of the major com-ponents of the project is

to make it accessible tothe public, so that meanschanges to make it visitorfriendly. That will includethe drying out of the base-ment, making the fourdecks of the building safefor access, and to restorethe lantern. An interpretivehistory of the lighthousealso needs to be developed.

Harold said that theydid an inspection to thecondition of the catwalkand that it is holding upquite well, but will eventu-ally need some attention in

    the future.We will be monitoring

the catwalk, said Harold. There is paint failure onit in obvious places, but itis one-tenth of one percenton the entire surface, soit is a very small area. Asfunds become available we

will work out solutions forthat as well.

It is a challenge thatHarold feels confident they

will be able to attain in thenear future.
