    BYKEN GRABOWSKI

    ASSOCIATE EDITOR

MANISTEE Members of the RollingThunder Inc. Michigan Chapter # 1

received a special honor during their mem-bership meeting on July 17 at the ManisteeMoose Lodge when Army Sgt. 1st ClassAdam Schuessler presented them with aflag that flew over Headquarters SupportCompany 18th Airborne Corps VictoryBase Complex (Al Faw Palace) in BaghdadIraq.

Schuessler is a Manistee Countynative who has served one tour of duty inOperation New Dawn in Iraq, and threetours of duty during Operation IraqiFreedom. He told how the flag presenta-tion came about when he was approachedby local Rolling Thunder member JohnStocki on the subject nearly a year ago.

Eight months ago, John asked me if it

were possible to fly a flag over in Iraq thatI could get to you, said Schuessler. I toldhim I would be glad to do it, and then Ifound out I was going to be working at theAl Faw Palace Headquarters in Baghdad. Ithought this would be a great opportunityto fly a flag for Rolling Thunder.

Schuessler said that due to the signifi-cance of where he was stationed for thistour of duty it wasnt as easy to fly a flag atthis location as it might be at some otherareas of Iraq. However, what made it evenmore significant was some very historicalturn of events the day before the flag wasset to fly in Iraq.

It took a little coordinating to get it

done, but it was decided that May 2 wouldbe the day that it was to fly over Al FawPalace headquarters, said Schuessler. There is some significance to this flagbecause it just so happens that when wewoke up on May 2 we found out aboutthe killing of Osama bin Laden the nightbefore. So that morning the honor guardflew this flag on the flag pole after the hon-ors were rendered. What you have here isthe first flag flown over the USFI (UnitedStates Forces in Iraq) headquarters afterOsama bin Laden was killed.

The flag was placed in a special case

and included a certificate from Lt. Gen.Lloyd Austin III who is the four star com-mander of Iraq. Schuessler read the certifi-cate that came with it.

It said this flag of the United States ofAmerica is presented to Rolling ThunderMichigan Chapter # 1 and this flag wasflown over the compound Camp VictoryBaghdad, Iraq during Operation NewDawn on May 2, 2011, said Schuessler.

Thank you for your support of the sol-diers, sailors, Marines, airmen and CoastGuard presently deployed and it is signed

by Command Sgt. Joseph R. Allan andcommand Lt. Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III.

Also inscribed on the certificate was thesoldiers creed that Schuessler read. It goesas follows:

The Soldiers CreedI am an American Soldier.I am a Warrior and a member of a

team.I serve the people of the United States

and live the Army Values.I will always place the mission first.I will never accept defeat.I will never quit.

I will never leave a fallen comrade.I am disciplined, physically and men-

tally tough, trained and proficient in mywarrior tasks and drills.

I always maintain my arms, my equip-ment and myself.

I am an expert and I am a professional.I stand ready to deploy, engage, and

destroy the enemies of theUnited States of America in close com-

bat.I am a guardian of freedom and the

American way of life.I am an American Soldier. The Army Sgt. 1st Class paid tribute to

the local Rolling Thunder and their efforts

to support the troops presently servingtheir country.

Thank you to all of you, saidSchuessler. What you guys do and thetireless support to us is often a thankless

job. Its just an honor to come back heretoday because you give your time and yourmoney to support us, so thank you foreverything you do.

Stocki then presented Schuessler witha banner of support that was signed bymembers of the Rolling Thunder that he

will be taking back to Iraq when he rejoinshis unit in the near future.

With temperaturesclimbing into the 90sthis week and communi-ties experiencing heatadvisories, the MichiganDepartment of CommunityHealth (MDCH) is advisingresidents of the health risksassociated with extreme

temperatures and preven-tive measures they can taketo stay safe.

Body temperature canstart to rise any time tem-peratures are in the upper80s and above, and this cancause muscle cramps, dizzi-ness, severe heat illness andeven death.

The elderly and youngchildren are especially vul-nerable when it comes tothe effects of extreme heat, said Olga Dazzo, director ofthe MDCH. Its a good idea

to check frequently on lovedones, neighbors and friendswho may be at greater riskfor heat illness.

Heat illness occurs whenthe body is unable to cooldown. The body normallycools down by sweating.During extremely hotweather, sweating may notbe enough to cool the body.Thats when people canbecome overheated to thepoint of becoming ill.

People should drinkwater frequently evenwhen they may not bethirsty in order to stayhydrated, said Dr. DeanSienko, interim chiefmedical executive for theMDCH. They also shouldavoid alcohol and caffeinebecause both can causedehydration, the first stageof heat-related illness.

To avoid heat illness, thehealth department suggests:

Stay cool. Use an airconditioner or go to a coolplace such as a basement, neighbors house, shop-ping mall or cooling center.

Spending even a few hoursa day in air conditioningcan help reduce your riskfor heat illness.

Use a fan only whenthe windows are open orthe air conditioner is on.Fans will not prevent heatillness when the tempera-

ture is in the high 90s. Take a cool shower

or bath. Keep shades and cur-

tains closed to block the sunfrom coming in your homeor office.

Avoid exercising andphysical activity duringthe hottest part of the day.Mornings and evenings areusually cooler than mid-day.

Stay out of the sun.If you must be in the sun,

    wear thin and light-colored

clothing, a hat and sun-glasses. Wear sun screen(at least SPF15) and reap-ply every two hours, afterswimming or exercising.

Check on familymembers, neighbors andfriends at least once a day.Move them to a cool place ifnecessary.

Never, ever leavechildren, the elderly or petsin parked vehicles. Vehiclesheat up very quickly andcan become dangerous, even with the windowsopen.

Dehydration is the firststage of heat-related ill-ness. Dehydration occurs

when body fluids are lost bysweating and not replaced.Symptoms include drymouth, thirst, headache, dizziness, cramps, excessivefatigue and irritability.

Anyone experiencingdehydration should moveto a shaded or air-condi-tioned area, replace fluids

by drinking water, andconsult a physician if symp-toms persist or if there is

an existing condition thatcould be complicated byincreased fluid intake.

The next more seriousstage of heat-related ill-ness is heat exhaustion.Heat exhaustion typicallyoccurs when people exerciseheavily or work in a warm,

humid place where bodyfluids are lost by sweating. This fluid loss can causereduced blood flow to vitalorgans, which results inshock. Signs of heat exhaus-tion include headache, moist and pale skin, nausea, dizziness, weakness andexhaustion.

To treat exhaustion, seekshade or a cool place. Drinka half glass of cool waterevery 15 minutes, removeor loosen any tight clothing, and apply a cool, wet towel

or compress. Heat exhaus-tion can develop into heatstroke, so if symptoms per-sist or worsen, seek emer-gency medical treatment.

Heat stroke is the mostsevere stage of heat-relatedillness. A heat stroke, alsocalled sunstroke, can be

deadly. Symptoms includevomiting, decreased alert-ness level or complete lossof consciousness, high bodytemperature (sometimesas high as 105 degreesfahrenheit) or red, hot, anddry skin with a rapid, weakpulse.

Call 911 for immediatemedical help and try to coolthe person down. If pos-sible, put them in a tub ofcool water or shower them

    with a garden hose.

Health department urges caution as heat rises
