THE FIRST READING Jeremiah 20:7-13 O Lord, you have enticed me,

and I was enticed;

you have overpowered me,

and you have prevailed.

I have become a laughingstock all day long;

everyone mocks me.

For whenever I speak, I must cry out,

I must shout, "Violence and destruction!"

For the word of the Lord has become for me

a reproach and derision all day long.

If I say, "I will not mention him,

or speak any more in his name,"

then within me there is something like a burning fire

shut up in my bones;

I am weary with holding it in,

and I cannot.

For I hear many whispering:

"Terror is all around!

Denounce him! Let us denounce him!"

All my close friends

are watching for me to stumble.

"Perhaps he can be enticed,

and we can prevail against him,

and take our revenge on him."

But the Lord is with me like a dread warrior;

therefore my persecutors will stumble,

and they will not prevail.

They will be greatly shamed,

for they will not succeed.

Their eternal dishonor

will never be forgotten.

O Lord of hosts, you test the righteous,

you see the heart and the mind;

let me see your retribution upon them,

for to you I have committed my cause.

Sing to the Lord;

praise the Lord!

For he has delivered the life of the needy

from the hands of evildoers.

(Silence)

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People Thanks be to God.

THE EPISTLE READING Romans 6:1b-11

Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to

sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were

baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just

as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of

life.

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a

resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might

be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin.

But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ,

being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death

he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider

yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.

(Silence)

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 10:24-39

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to the twelve disciples, “A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the

master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have

called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!

“So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret

that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear

whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the

soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a

penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of

your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.

“Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my

Father in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in

heaven.

“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a

sword.

For I have come to set a man against his father,

and a daughter against her mother,

and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;

and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.

Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or

daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me

is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake

will find it.”

Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The People sit.

SERMON NICENE CREED Book of Common Prayer, p. 358

Please stand as you are able.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

All are invited to make a gift to support the St. Richard’s ministry of sharing God’s love with the world

by making an online donation at http://www.strichards.org/giving.

THE LORD’S PRAYER, Book of Common Prayer, p. 364

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the

kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER AT THIS TIME OF FASTING FROM HOLY COMMUNION Celebrant A “spiritual communion” is a devotional that we can participate in at any time to

express the desire to receive the Holy Communion. Current circumstances impede

us from physically partaking of the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The

St. Richard’s Community is therefore fasting from the bread and wine of the

Eucharist and participating in “spiritual communion” with God and each other.

Let us pray:

All Jesus Christ our Lord, we believe that you are truly present in the Blessed

Sacrament of the Altar which this community faithfully celebrated before our

Page 13: Welcome to St. Richard’s Episcopal Churchimages.acswebnetworks.com › 1 › 3008 › 062120Pentecost3... · Welcome to St. Richard’s Episcopal Church 5151 Lake Howell Road, Winter

13

world changed. We love you above all things, and long for you in our souls.

Since we cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into our

hearts we pray. As though you have already come, we embrace you and unite

ourselves entirely to you. Help us to know and feel that we are always

connected to you and to each other across time and space. We pray this until

we are reunited physically and can share the Body of Christ, the bread of

heaven, the Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. Amen.

BLESSING Celebrant The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the

great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant: Make

you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-

pleasing in his sight; and the blessing of God Almighty, Father Son and holy Spirit

be with you now and for ever and ever. Amen.

Please stand as you are able. CLOSING HYMN “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah” (Zion)

1. Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim thro' this barren land; I am weak, but Thou art mighty,

Hold me with Thy powerful hand: Bread of Heaven, Feed me till I want no more:

Bread of Heaven, Feed me till I want no more.

2. Open now the crystal fountain whence the healing waters flow; Let the fiery, cloudy pillar

Lead me all my journey thro’: Strong Deliverer, be Thou still my Strength and Shield;

Strong Deliverer, be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

3. When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Bear me thro’ the swelling current,

Land me safe on Canaan’s side: Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee;

Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee.

DISMISSAL

Deacon Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.
