WELCOME TO EMMAUS LUTHERAN!
The sixth Sunday after pentecost

GOD’S DIVINE SERVICE TO US: The Ministers of Christ Are Sent with His Authority to Forgive Sins and
Give Life The prophet Ezekiel was raised up by the Spirit of the Lord and sent to speak an unpopular
Word to the rebellious house of Israel. As a prophet, he was not to speak his own word, but to preach the Law and the Gospel: “Thus says the Lord GOD,” whether the people “hear or refuse to hear” (Ezek. 2:4–5). So, too, in the footsteps of the prophets before Him, the Lord Jesus “went about among the villages teaching” (Mark 6:6). In His hometown, as elsewhere, “many who heard him were astonished,” marveling at His wisdom and at the “mighty works done by his hands,” and yet “they took offense at him” (Mark 6:2–3). The offense culminates in His cross, which is, ironically, the heart and center of His “authority over the unclean spirits” (Mark 6:7). It is by that authority of His cross that those He sends preach repentance, “cast out many demons” and heal the sick (Mark 6:12–13). Thus, the apostle Paul boasts in the cross of Christ and in his own weaknesses, knowing that God’s grace is sufficient and that the power of Christ “is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:8–9).
WELCOME! What a blessing to gather together to worship the One True God! The Lord will bless your worship as he brings His gifts to you through Word and Sacrament. May we all respond with prayer, praise and thanksgiving. We invite you to prepare for worship in silence and prayer. Remembering your Baptism, you are encouraged to make the sign of the
cross when you see this symbol T in the bulletin. If you are a guest, Pastor Olsen would love to meet you.
WORSHIP WITH CHILDREN: Worship is a time for the entire family to be together to hear the Word of God, for faith comes by hearing (Rom. 10:17). Therefore we encourage parents and children of all ages to sit together in the service. Understanding it is difficult for little ones to sit for long periods, Totes for Tots activity bags are available as you enter church (by the information table) for children to use during the worship service. Each bag contains books
and quiet toys. Please return the bags and their contents after the worship service. Thank you! A Cry Room is also available in the Preschool/Mrs. MacKenzie’s room (east hall), where you can listen to the worship service.
DON’T UNDERSTAND THE WORSHIP SERVICE? If it is your first time, some things may seem foreign. Worship does not come naturally we have to learn it. It does not come on the first try; the first hour in a foreign country the language and customs may be foreign. The liturgy is the special activity of the baptized people of God. It has its own special language like we do in our workplaces. It has its own customs like we do in our families. Every Sunday we learn more of worship and faith. The liturgy is where God reveals Himself to us and gives us Hs gifts. Here we learn who He is and how to respond to Him. The words of worship come from the Scriptures and its form has been used for 2,000 years. So don’t worry if it all seems strange. You learn by practicing - join us each week!
“I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the House of the Lord…’” Psalm 122:1
PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: O Lord, my creator, redeemer, and comforter, as I come to worship You in spirit and in truth, I humbly pray that You would open my heart to the preaching of Your Word so that I may repent of my sins, believe in Jesus Christ as my only Savior, and grow in grace and holiness. Hear me for the sake of His name. Amen.
RESTROOMS are located on each side of the sanctuary. We have a Family Restroom (handicap accessible & baby changing station) located next to the Church Office.

5 And when in pow’r He comes,
Oh, may our native land
From all its rending tombs
Send forth a glorious band,
A countless throng,
With joy to sing

Salvation’s song! Public domain
Divine Service Lutherans follow an order of worship based exclusively on Scripture and focused completely on Jesus. Through the Word and Sacraments, God speaks to His people. Francis Scott Key, yes, who wrote the “Star Spangled Banner,” gives us this hymn to “cast down your pride, your sin deplore, and bow before The Crucifed.”

+ CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION +
Invocation
The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy
Spirit. Matthew 28:19b; [18:20]
C Amen.
P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and
confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. [Hebrews 10:22]
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8
P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Psalm 32:5
Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.
P O almighty God, merciful Father,
C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and
iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly
deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am
heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I
pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the
holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved
Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor,
sinful being.
P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called
and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God
unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my
Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the
Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. [John 20:19-23]
C Amen.
Invocation is from the Latin for “call upon”; the words spoken at the beginning of the service; serves as a reminder of Holy Baptism.
P = Pastor
L = Liturgist/Lector
C = Congregation Confession is the act by which one admits or confesses sin(s) and the guilt of sin. Absolution literally means “set free.” This Latin term was used as a translation of the biblical word aphiemi, meaning “to set free, cancel, or forgive.”

+ SERVICE OF THE WORD +
Introit Soloist: Oh, taste and see that
the | LORD is good!*
Blessèd is the man who takes ref- | uge in him!
C For the LORD has chosen | Zion;*
he has desired it for his | dwelling place:
Soloist: “This is my resting place for- | ever;*
here I will dwell, for I have de- | sired it.
C I will abundantly bless her pro- | visions;*
I will satisfy her | poor with bread.
Soloist: Her priests I will clothe with sal- | vation,*
and her saints will | shout for joy.
All: Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*
and to the Holy | Spirit;
as it was in the be- | ginning,*
is now, and will be forever. | Amen.
Soloist: Oh, taste and see that the | LORD is good!*
Blessèd is the man who takes ref- | uge in him!
Kyrie Mark 10:47
Gloria in Excelsis Luke 2:14; John 1:29
The Introit is a collection of passages from Scripture that set the tone for the services; verses are different each Sunday. Today’s Introit is from Psalm 132:13-16; antiphon: Psalm 34:8. An antiphon is a refrain-like verse from Scripture that begins and concludes the Introit. Kyrie is Greek for “Lord, have mercy.” It is the first prayer of the congregation in the Divine Service; it is a cry for mercy that our Lord and King will hear us and help us in our needs and troubles.
3
Gloria in Excelsis: Confident that the Lord is merciful and has forgiven us, we join the whole Church and all the angels in singing glory to God.
4
Salutation and Collect of the Day
2 Timothy 4:22
P Let us pray.
O God, Your almighty power is made known chiefly in
showing mercy. Grant us the fullness of Your grace that we
may be called to repentance and made partakers of Your
heavenly treasures; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever.
C Amen.
Old Testament: Ezekiel 2:1–5 1He said to me, “Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak with
you.” 2And as he spoke to me, the Spirit entered into me and set me on my
feet, and I heard him speaking to me. 3And he said to me, “Son of man, I
send you to the people of Israel, to nations of rebels, who have rebelled
against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this
very day. 4The descendants also are impudent and stubborn: I send you to
them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD.’ 5And whether
they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house) they will know
that a prophet has been among them.
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Gradual Soloist Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his
ways! For from him and through him and to him are all things.
To him be glory forever. Amen.
The Salutation shows the special relationship between the congregation and the pastor, God’s representative. It is a greeting found often in the Bible. The Collect is the pastor’s first prayer in the name of the people, as he speaks for the congregation. It “collects” the theme for the day in a concise way. Summary:
God sends His prophet out to preach repentance. The Gradual is a response of praise between the Old Testament and Epistle readings.
5
Epistle: 2 Corinthians 12:1–10 1I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will
go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2I know a man in Christ who
fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body
or out of the body I do not know, God knows. 3And I know that this man
was caught up into paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do
not know, God knows— 4and he heard things that cannot be told, which
man may not utter. 5On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own
behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. 6Though if I should wish
to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth. But I
refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or
hears from me. 7So to keep me from being too elated by the surpassing
greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger
of Satan to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. 8Three times I
pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9But he said to
me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in
weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses,
so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10For the sake of Christ,
then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and
calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Alleluia
Holy Gospel: Mark 6:1-13
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the sixth chapter.
1[Jesus] went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples
followed him. 2And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue,
Summary: With all the blessings Paul experiences, he is content in his difficulties, knowing Christ’s grace is sufficient. Alleluia is Hebrew for “praise the Lord” and is a word of joy and gladness.

and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get
these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty
works done by his hands? 3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and
brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters
here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4And Jesus said to them, “A
prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his
relatives and in his own household.” 5And he could do no mighty work
there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the
villages teaching.
7And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and
gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8He charged them to take
nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in
their belts— 9but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. 10And he said
to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from
there. 11 And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to
you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony
against them.” 12So they went out and proclaimed that people should
repent. 13And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who
were sick and healed them.
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Summary:
Jesus sends out the twelve, two by two, to proclaim people should repent. 7
Nicene Creed
C I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living
and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and
glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen.
The Creed is a solemn confession and response of faith to the word. The Nicene Creed was composed in A.D. 325.

P The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your
hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
C Amen.
Offertory Psalm 51:10-12
This hymn reminds us that God seeks those who are lost. This may be the earliest missionary hymn we have. The Sermon: The preacher proclaims God’s Law and Gospel for the hearers. The Offertory is a prayer in preparation for the Service of the Sacrament.

Prayer of the Church
+ SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT +
Preface
2 Timothy 4:22
The Offering symbolizes the “spiritual worship” of Christian lives offered in response to God and unites the faithful in an act of fellowship. The Prayer of the Church include prayers that what has been heard may be taken to heart and that God would take care of our needs. The Preface is a proclamation of praise and thanksgiving that begins the Service of the Sacrament. A dialogue between pastor and the people used since the Early Church.
10
[Colossians 3:1]
Psalm 136
P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times
and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty
Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who,
having created all things, took on human flesh and was born of
the virgin Mary. For our sake He died on the cross and rose
from the dead to put an end to death, thus fulfilling Your will
and gaining for You a holy people. Therefore with angels and
archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and
magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and
saying:
Sanctus Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9
The Proper Preface is a special prayer said before the Lord’s Supper that emphasizes the key themes of the feast, occasion, or season of the Church Year. The Sanctus is Latin for “holy.”
11
Lord's Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took
bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to
the disciples and said: “Take eat; this is My T body, which is
given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He
had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all
of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is
shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as
you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
The Lord’s Prayer is the model prayer Jesus taught to the disciples (Matthew 6:9-13). Sometimes it is called the Our Father, after the first words of the prayer. The words spoken by Christ when He institute the Sacrament of the Altar; the pastor speaks these very words of Christ at the consecration of the bread and wine.
12
Pax Domini John 20:19
Agnus Dei John 1:29
Pax Domini is Latin for “peace of the Lord.” In anticipation of the blessings to be received, the pastor and people announce the peace of God to one another. Agnus Dei is Latin for “Lamb of God”; we adore the Savior who is present in the Holy Meal.
13
Distribution
Our Holy Communion Practice In Holy Communion we are joined in a personal way with Christ and
with one another as we receive the body and blood of our Savior
Jesus Christ under the bread and wine for the forgiveness of our sins.
Therefore, out of faithfulness toward God, and in sincere love that
seeks to guard the spiritual well-being of all who would commune,
Emmaus practices Closed Communion.
Holy Scripture clearly teaches that those communing together be
unified in their confession of the faith, and also that those who
commune unworthily do great harm to themselves. When a person
partakes of the sacrament, he/she is also confessing his/her
unreserved agreement with the doctrine and practice that is
proclaimed from the altar and pulpit of which the Sacrament is
administered. Therefore, we ask you to refrain from communing if
you are not a member of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. All
others are still welcome to come forward, crossing your arms to
receive a blessing. Please speak with the pastor about receiving
instruction to learn what Scripture teaches and our church confesses.
We pray fervently for the day when Christ returns and all divisions
will cease.
Thank you for respecting our practice.
In the Distribution we receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins.

Stewardship Focus
July: Stewardship of rest: Pt IV
Stewardship Goal: Courageously Confess Christ through the vocational aspects of
Whole Life Stewardship now and into the next generations.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Mat 11:28 ESV)
Family Stewardship Discussion Read the Scripture verse(s) above first
Yes, simple but so true. The Sabbath rest is ultimately about Christ and resting in Him. Christ gives us rest from the heavy weight of our sins, the heaviest weight and burden that we will ever have. We can rest safe and secure in the work of Christ, that we need not work, nor labor for our salvation nor for our forgiveness. We have been justified, been made right before God, made holy by the blood of Jesus Christ, whose own work merited forgiveness for us, His work, not yours. You can rest safe and secure in the certain truth that Jesus Christ’s work, through His suffering, death and resurrection has won for you your eternal rest.
I have heard some say, and I pray it is not you, “I hope I get to heaven?” There is no question in this! There should be no doubt, for Christ has done it all! You are saved by grace through faith apart from your works! Rest in Christ and in the forgiveness and salvation that He has secured for you, not just when you die, but today, everyday! You can rest in Him each and every day as you hear or read His Word, as you confess your sins and receive absolution , and most especially as you receive His gifts of mercy that comes to you in His very body and blood under the bread and the wine. So rest, but not just this month, which by the way is the seventh month, rest not just one day, but rest secure each and every day that mercies of the Lord are new each morning. “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lam 3:22-23 ESV) He will surely give you rest!

“LIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEAR” Pentecost X (Proper 13B) – What if we can’t afford this baby? What if we can’t pay for these treatments? Abortion means fewer people in poverty, doesn’t it? Assisted suicide leads to less stress on limited resources, right? The Gospel dissolves every panic in sweet promises. He who sends mouths has never failed to supply their meat (Exodus 16:13; Psalm 145:15-16). Ensuring survival poses no trouble for Him who has already engineered salvation (John 6:25).
Life Thoughts in the Church Year are designed to help pastors and congregations see the church year through the lens of the sanctity of human life. Life Thoughts are based on the appointed readings from Lutheran Service Book. www.lutheransforlife.org

Dear Fellow Redeemed in Christ,
Your Emmaus Board of Elders have designated today as
Armed Forces Sunday. We are partnering with the LCMS
Ministry to the Armed Forces in remembering and
supporting the men and women of our armed forces, along
with the chaplains who bring them the changeless Gospel
message. We publish and pray for our church, school, and
pre-school military-related personnel on a weekly basis.
In support of this LCMS Ministry, we will have a special
door offering after the service this morning, with all the
proceeds going to this ministry.
We would also like to take time today to recognize our
members who faithfully served in the military. We have
listed the names of those who we were aware that have
served or are currently serving. We apologize if we missed
anyone. Please see Darlene or call the church office so that
we can update our list.
Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generosity.
In His service,
Jim Heeren, Chairman
Board of Elders
Emmaus Elders: Robert Barkdull, Jerry Lunz, Rodney
Peters, and Bill Schmidt.
Thank you to these members who
