College Career Readiness Standards

• These standards are “what our children learn” in school. They are the basic skills that children in Indiana should be able to do.• Challenging curriculum taught by

all 4 teachers, yet they may use different materials

Language Arts• Houghton Mifflin Stories• Trade Books (picture, chapter books, JGB short stories)

• Good-Fit Books (independent reading)

• Reading and Writing for different reasons: (fiction and non-fiction)

Narrative, Informative, and Persuasive Writings

What is fluency?• Ability to read quickly and

easily• Students who don’t read

smoothly have to work hard to figure out the words. This interferes with understanding.

Instruction is whole group, small group, and individual using an approach called the Daily 5.• Model how good readers think about

reading• Title 1 resources are available for those

students who need the extra support. We re-evaluate students several times during the year.

Accelerated Reader• Use fall scores to determine goals

and reading range• Guides students to pick books that

“fit”• Research supports reading at the

bottom part of your level for the most growth. As fluency, accuracy, and comprehension increase, you know it’s time to move up.

• Helps teachers to monitor growth

Be sure to get a background check early for participation in trips and other classroom events.

• Be sure to check the green communication folder nightly.• Send money in an envelope marked with name and purpose.• Water bottle permitted in spill-proof container.• Second graders do not have snack time.
