District 7910 Celebrates Successful Guyana Playground Project

Every year, a group of Rotariansfrom District 7910 travel to a third­worldcountry to accomplish a "hands­on"project with

the resident Rotary club. This February, ourdistrict team traveled to Georgetown,Guyana to build a playground for special­needs students at a local school. Afterward, the Rotary members went to alocal orphanage to visit the children anddeliver stuffed toys, books and games. TheRotary Club of Georgetown coordinated the visit and participated in theactivities. This is another good example of Rotary at work and Rotaryinternational service. Brookline Rotary Signs Up Candidates To Launch Interact Club By Bob Anthony During District 7910 training, DistrictInteract Chair Ron Bott suggestedcommunity events are an opportunity tosign­up candidates to launch an Interactclub. That is exactly what MarinaBrodskaya of the Rotary Club ofBrookline did on February 28. Shehelped community leaders, UrbanImprov, and Wellesley Interact teensschedule a Teen Wellness Workshop, which identified teens interested increating an Interact club in Brookline to perform community servicefocused on mental health and wellness promotion. Urban Improv includedthe audience in skits onproblem­solving andcoping with life's worries,including awareness ofsuicidal ideation in

oneself or a friend. Peer leaders showed an excerpt from the documentaryBreak Free From Depression and facilitated small group discussions. After the workshop, age 12­18 participants were invited to sign­up fortraining as Interact peer leaders. The event was hosted by United Parishwith volunteers from other congregations, health­care providers, BrooklineRotary, Brookline High School, the Teen Center, and AdolescentWellness.

prepared for what will be anexciting and challenging year. Youstill have three months to developyour plans. There are so manyitems to consider that you may getbogged down in details. It may be useful to focus on theimportant few items and to rely onyour organization of committeechairs to take care of the manydetails. Of course, it is critical thatyou do have a slate of officers andcommittee chairs to carry on thework of the club. Your club askedyou to take on the role ofpresident and is incumbent onthem to support you by assumingthe responsibilities of committeechairs. Rotary’s Dictionary Project Comes Full Circle in Massachusetts

After learning about The DictionaryProject in the late ‘90s, the Rotary Club ofActon­Boxborough decided to visitseveral local elementary schools andhand out personalized dictionaries. Littledid they know, one third­grade studentfrom their 1998 project in an Acton­Boxborough school would become ateacher. And, not just any teacher –a third­grade teacher!

Today, Mairin Gulliver teaches at Luther Conant School in Acton. Thisyear, when Rotarians came to her class to hand out the dictionaries, shetold them that she received her personal dictionary from the Rotary clubwhen she was in third grade and still has it! She remembers the day whenRotarians came to her class and gave each student their own book. “Iremember taking my book home and flipping through the pages to findnew information,” Mairin says. Today, she uses the donated dictionaries inher classroom to teach basic dictionary skills through a treasurehunt activity. After the strategy­based lesson, the students get to take theirbooks home to use for their spelling and language­arts practiceworksheets.

When asked why paperback dictionaries are important, Mairin explainsthat having a personal dictionary puts each child on the same playing field.Although resources and learning materials can be monitored in theclassroom environment, teachers such as her recognize that not everychild has access to a computer – or even books at home. “Like our mottohere at Luther Conant School, the whole child is the whole idea, we wantour students to have every resource available to be successful,” Mairinsays. Bedford Rotary To Pack Meals For Stop Hunger Now On May 14

The Rotary Club of Bedford willattempt to feed 250,000 childrenwith their fourth annual Meals forKids food packaging event inpartnership with Stop Hunger Nowon May 14 at the Bedford campusof Middlesex Community College.

The Rotary Club, composed of justa few dozen businessprofessionals from Bedford and its

surrounding communities, began feeding hungry children in2013. That first year they established their relationship withStop Hunger Now, they raised enough money and gatheredenough volunteer packagers to put together enoughpackaged meals to feed 15,000 hungry children. Read more
