Once you click Login, the School Home Page will appear.  Along the left side of the screen, you will see the navigation menu.

To view homework assignments, select the My Homework Tab. Student:  The default setting is All Students .   If you have multiple children enrolled, you can select the student to view each child’s individual calendar.  Format:  Calendar/List Time Frame:  Month/Week/Day Specific Date Range  

 

 

All information can be printed by selecting the Print button on any screen.

Printing 

Printing of needed class materials will be mandatory. Please refer to the Printing Contract at the                               end of this handbook. 

 

Sophia 

Assignments requiring extended directions and clarifications, as well as policies and procedures                       will be uploaded to www.sophia.org . Bookmark this site as it will be used yearlong by various                                 teachers.  All codes are listed in the Codes section of this handbook. 

 

Behavior Policy 

The behavior policy as outlined in the Parent­Student Handbook will be followed by Junior High                             teachers. Students are expected to display Christian concern and courtesy for the teachers,                         themselves, and their fellow students. The student’s conduct grade is recorded in RenWeb and                           will be a part of the weekly Progress Report. The planner is our primary communication and                               documentation to you about your child’s behavior. We may also call, email, or send a note home

from time to time to highlight special circumstances of outstanding behavior, as well as, to seek                               cooperation with areas of need.  

 

Textbooks 

Social Studies, Literature, Math and Science textbooks will be issued for home use and must be                               covered at all times. This will help protect the book and keep them usable for many years.                                 Textbook contracts will be issued to ensure the proper care of issued textbooks. Many textbooks                             also have online editions that may be accessed from home. These websites and codes are listed                               in the Codes section of this handbook. 

Classroom Materials 

Students must come to class prepared with their appropriate notebook, writing utensil, and                         homework, etc. If any of the materials are not in class as they are needed, the student will lose                                     conduct points. Each student is given initial supplies to begin the school year. It is the student’s                                 responsibility to buy new notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, etc. as they are lost and/or                           filled. 

Student Planner  

Students will be issued a planner at the beginning of the year and it is the student’s responsibility to take care of his/her planner for the entire year.  The planner has multiple uses:  

✓ Homework: The student must write down all homework assignments for each class. When homework is not assigned for a certain class, the student should write “none” in the box for that class.  Every box for each class should have something written down each day.  Planners are checked randomly by junior high teachers to make sure the student is writing their homework in the planner.  If homework is not being written down, the student will receive a conduct mark (B8) for not following directions.  

✓ Conduct grade: The student’s conduct chart is updated each week on Renweb by their homeroom teacher.  The conduct chart will not be checked for a parent signature. Instead, the homeroom teacher will send a progress report home every Friday that will serve as a notification of the student’s conduct grade.  

 

Official Heading 

Students will receive a one­point deduction from every assignment that does not include their                           official heading. Please refer to the Sophia video on this topic which can be found in the Junior                                   High group if you have any questions.

Graded Papers 

Papers will be sent home on Tuesday of each week and must be returned by Thursday of that                                   same week. These documents are needed if a grade comes into question. If the document is                               lost the grade on Renweb will stand. 

 

Grading 

Grades will be given based on maximum points possible and for the following: tests, quizzes,                             homework, participation, and projects. All graded assignments must be completed in black ink or                           pencil. Color coded notes are teacher specific. Detailed progress reports will be emailed on                           Friday afternoons. This will serve to communicate both academic progress as well as conduct.                           The letter “M” on the progress report indicates a missing assignment and the letter “P” (pending)                               indicates that the assignment has been received but not yet graded. 

 

Homework 

Homework will be posted daily in the classroom as well as on RenWeb. There may be occasions                                 that the classroom announcement of homework is different from that listed on RenWeb. In this                             case, please defer to the announced assignment in class. Homework will make up no more than                               10% of the nine week grade. 

 

Testing Schedule 

Junior High teachers will attempt to schedule no more than three major assessments on the                             same day. This includes tests, large quizzes and projects. All tests and quizzes will be posted on                                 the teacher’s calendar on RenWeb at least two days prior. 

 

Communication 

Open communication between parents and teachers is very important to the student’s academic                         success. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any reason. Email is the easiest method, but                                 sometimes a personal conversation is best. Please email if you would like to set up a conference                                 and we will schedule with you as soon as possible. **Include the student’s name and section in                                 the subject line of any/all emails sent to teachers.

Uniform Policy 

Most commonly made uniform mistakes that result in conduct point deductions: 

✓ Repeatedly not wearing pants for mass…3rd strike earns a visit with Mrs. Leger. ✓ Not wearing the student ID clipped to the collar, or wearing it backwards. ✓ All undergarments must be white.   ✓ Sweatshirts, sweaters, PE shorts should all be in good condition and fit properly.  Logo 

should not be peeling off.  Thumb holes should not be present.   ✓ There is no warning given for long hair.  Marks will be given every day until the hair is 

cut.  Multiple marks will earn a visit with Mrs. Stemmans. ✓ Boys must be clean shaven. ✓ No nail polish is acceptable. ✓ Jewelry…: 

a. No rings or bracelets, not even religious ones, are allowed.  This includes hair ties     worn on the wrist.  b. Watches should not make any noises during class. 

c. Simple chain and cross, scapular or religious medals are allowed, but must be worn inside the shirt.  Name chains are not allowed. 

 

ZAP Policy (late assignments) 

All late assignments will have a 50% point deduction. The progress report emailed every Friday                             will indicate an “M” for a missing assignment and is subject to the zap policy. The weekly                                 progress report will serve as the parent’s notification of a missing assignment. Students will have                             until the following Friday (one week) to turn in the missing assignment. If the assignment is not                                 turned in, the student’s name will be submitted to Mrs. Stemmans for disciplinary action. 

 

Absences/Make­up Work 

We will follow the make­up work policy in the Parent­Student Handbook. It is the student’s                             responsibility to meet with the teacher whose class they missed upon returning to school.                           Information (worksheets, handouts, copies, etc.) will not be sent home by any of the junior high                               teachers. The student can retrieve this information from Renweb or when he/she returns to                           school. 

If an assignment is due and the student is absent for that class period, the work is due that day.                                       If a student is absent on a due date, the assignment is considered due the day he/she returns to                                     class. If the student does not receive a homework assignment because of an absence, the                             assignment is due the day following their return. Students are allowed one day for each day

absent for make­up work to be completed. If the student fails to turn in assignments during this                                 grace period, then ZAP policy will be applied.   

 

Missed Tests 

Make­up tests will be given every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:45am. It is the student’s                             responsibility to make arrangements with each teacher if several tests need to be made up.

Test Corrections  For those teachers allowing test corrections they are due on Thursdays. Students will receive half of the points taken off (up to one letter grade improvement) if corrected properly. Corrections forms are available on Renweb or Google Classroom. This is an optional assignment…but highly recommended.  

Exams 

Midterms and Final Exams  Exams are given in the core subject areas of Religion, Science, Social Studies, Language, Reading, and Math.  Students in grades 6 – 8 will take mid­term exams that cover the material taught during the first and second nine weeks in December and will take final exams that cover the material taught during the third and fourth nine weeks in May.    Prep Time:   During this time no graded activities will be given.  Graded tests kept in classroom folders will be returned to students in order to prepare study guides, notecards, etc. as needed.  Students may also work in study groups and complete other activities that will help them prepare.  Exam format is usually multiple choice questions.  Students utilize a Scantron and number 2 pencils to record answers. In Social Studies and Science a formal essay is written.  The exam is worth 10% of the semester grade.

Social Studies (Mrs. Guidry) 

Textbooks:   ✓ Please keep all Social Studies textbooks at home and covered at all times.  This will help 

protect the books and keep them usable for many years.  You may choose to not take an assigned text book and instead use the online book.    Materials: 

✓ Students must provide their own headphones or earbuds daily.  Students are allowed to bring a computer mouse.  

✓ BRLs are due every Friday by the end of the school day (2:30 pm).  If a BRL assignment is turned in after 2:30 pm, it will be considered late and subject to a 50% point deduction as per the ZAP policy.  Assignment Announcement: 

✓ If a student is absent only the day before an announced quiz/test, the student will still be expected to take the assessment on its scheduled date.    Skills Tuesday: 

✓ Each Tuesday will be devoted to completing in­class enrichment activities. These assignments are to be completed at school only.  If activities are not completed during class, the students will have the option of staying after school until 3:30 on Monday, Tuesday, and/or Thursdays.   Math (Mrs. Hargrave)

Language (Mrs. Johnson) 

Homework grade: ✓ Homework will be given on a daily basis and checked for completion.  Students will 

begin each nine weeks with 60 points and will lose (3) points if homework is not completed.  Homework assignments will be posted on the board and on Renweb.  Writing Logs: 

✓ Students will practice writing to build fluency and voice.  Writing logs will  remain in class at all times. Students will be instructed on the “How To’s”  and be expected to follow directions as they enter the classroom.  Writing   logs will be checked for a grade (each entry is worth 2 points and must   include log identification, the date of the log, and a highlight to show which entry was chosen from board.  The objective is to have the students trust their thoughts and write them down on paper.  The student should follow directions for each entry that has been chosen.) Once the student reaches 5, then he/she will show me for a grade.  Writing logs will be graded for following directions and participation. If the student is absent, he/she is responsible for making up the logs.   DOL–Daily Oral Language: 

✓ Students will edit, proofread, and review grammar exercises two days a week.  The student is responsible for copying the information from the board, then correcting the sentences. We will review the sentences orally as a class and the student is responsible for correcting the sentences with another colored ink pen as they check their work.  The students will hand their DOL’s into me and will be graded for following directions and participation. The students will be given a DOL quiz every other week. (The DOL will be worth 5 points and must include their name, the number entry, the date of the DOL, all of the sentences, and proof of editing/correcting the sentences.)  If a student is absent, he/she is responsible for making up the DOL.   Spelling words/quizzes: 

✓ Spelling words will be given every other week.  Students will be given class  time to define each word, spell the words correctly, find synonyms, and   write sentences or stories with the words. Spelling quizzes will be given on  Thursday or Friday of the same week.  If a student misses the spelling   quiz, he/she will have to make it up during recess or during homeroom   time.  

Test corrections: 

✓ Test corrections will be an optional assignment for all CHAPTER tests only.  Test corrections are due on Thursday.  They will not be accepted after the due date. Each correct answer will be worth ½ point.  Students must use test correction handout found on RENWEB and follow directions to receive points.

Reading (Mrs. Gilbert) 

Textbooks:   ✓ All textbooks must be covered and kept at home. Students are required to fill out and return 

the textbook contract.  The online textbook has an audio component for most selection. ✓ Additional texts such as Scope Magazine, novels, and various online resources will also be 

used.  Google Classroom 

✓ I will post my class notes, handouts, Powerpoints, videos etc. as needed through Google Classroom rather than RenWeb.  Students may be required to complete and turn in assignments through Google Classroom as well.  Reading Strategies and Comprehension:  

✓ Reading Strategies will be explicitly taught and practiced during class. Progress will be assessed                           through teacher observation during individual and small group discussions, activities, quizzes,                     and comprehension tests.  

Vocabulary:  

✓ Word identification strategies will be explicitly taught. Selection vocabulary focuses on word identification from a variety of reading material.  Flocabulary, an online resource, will be an additional resource. 

Essentials:  

✓ Essentials are literary terms and academic vocabulary. Terms are cumulative and will be assessed throughout the year including midterms, and finals.  

Speaking and Listening Skills 

✓ Speaking and listening skills will focus on effective communication and reasoning within small group discussions as well as whole class presentations.   

 

Writing 

✓ Writing skills will be practiced and assessed through a variety of activities generated from the reading selection.  Essays will present arguments based on literary analysis.

Reading Notebook:    

✓ Reading notes and responses to vocabulary and comprehension activities will be recorded in the composition book.  Students are expected to record information in their notebook as directed. Unannounced graded notebook check tests will be given.  It will reflect the student’s ability to follow directions and make corrections.  If absent, it is the student’s responsibility to record any notes and complete any missing activities the day they return to school.    Test Corrections: 

✓ Test Corrections are optional for major tests only and due on Thursdays. Students will receive half of the points taken off if corrected properly. The corrections form will be posted in Google Classroom and needs to be submitted through classroom by 3:00 P.M. Tests need to be returned to me rather than the graded paper folder to receive credit.  

Accelerated Reader (AR) 

✓ Students must have independent reading materials, either fiction or nonfiction. It is important that you supervise and monitor your child’s reading material in the same way you do movies.  Some of the young adult and adult literature students read contains mature subject matter and language that accurately portray today’s adolescents and reflect problems they face.  Various activities both in and out of class will center on this material.   

Accelerated Reading Grade:  ✓ Each student will be “Star” tested for their reading level and point goal.  The point goal 

is based on an average reading time of 35 minutes per day. In addition, both Science and Social Studies may assign nonfiction books that require an AR test.  Students may use their independent reading time both in class and at home for this material provided all reading assignments are complete.  The points for this will be included in their AR grade for Reading.  The following chart indicates the percent of goal to the reading grade.  Percent Point

If no tests are taken, student will receive 0. Points will be deducted if the book level is below goal. If percent correct is below 85% points will be deducted. Students will not be able to take tests on books below their zone unless preapproved by myself and/or librarian. Any books tested above reading level may result in change of point goal.  Library policies for cheating infractions are on RenWeb on the SLS Library HomePage.  

 

I am available before or after school by appointment to assist students or if they need access to                                   the classroom or a computer to complete work.  The student or you can email or send a note.  

Science (Mr. Deaville) 

✓ Homework will be given regularly and checked for completion. Students must answer in complete sentences and give an explanation for their answer. 

✓ Lab groups will be teacher­chosen, and each student must abide by the Lab Conduct and Safety Rules. Failure to follow the rules will result in lost lab privileges.  

Religion (Mrs. Mire) 

Study Guidelines: ✓ Study guidelines will be handed out at the beginning of each new chapter.  These will 

list important words and phrases, learning goals, and possible discussion topics for the chapter test. Students are encouraged to use the online resources, which include study games and practice tests.  Grades: 

✓ Grades will come from tests, projects, class participation, Mass participation, and Living Faith.   Class Service Projects: 

✓ 6th  Grade­ St. Joseph’s Diner­ Once per month, a group  of 6­8 sixth graders and 1­2 parent  volunteers will spend 1 ½­2   hours serving lunch, cleaning plates, etc.  Parent volunteers will   be needed to drive and supervise students.  

✓ 7th Grade­ LARC­ Alternating homerooms will leave after mass once per month to participate in activities with members of the LARC community.  5 parent volunteers will be needed to ride the bus and help supervise students for each trip.  Both classes will attend the LARC Spring Fling together in May.

✓ 8th Grade­ Big Buddy/Munchkin Program­ 8th graders will meet with their assigned kindergarten munchkins once each month at school for fun class activities and projects.  

 

Living Faith 

✓ Living Faith counts as 10% of the Religion grade for each nine weeks. Students are encouraged to turn this in early so the teacher can look over it and offer suggestions or ask for more information if necessary. Living Faith forms are not accepted late.  

✓ Print the form at the beginning of each nine weeks so that it can be filled out as Masses are attended and services are completed.   

✓ Family chores cannot be counted for service time.  Carrying in groceries and doing yard work at home are part of being in a family.  

✓ Be very descriptive.  This is an important grade and a very important assignment. Take the time to describe your experiences and feelings in detail.  For example, “alter served” does not tell much.  A better way to say it would be “alter served at St. Leo the Great on 9/21/15 at 11:00 mass.”  

✓ Try to use a variety of services and not just the same things each nine weeks.  Look for new opportunities to help others in need.  Many ideas will be discussed in class as part of our daily discussions.

The Junior High teachers require materials to be printed at home as well as accessing RenWeb                               daily. We understand that unexpected problems with technology do arise, and when that                         happens, PLEASE email the teachers letting us know. When we receive notification, needed                         printing will be done at school. If no email or written notice is given, the assignment may be                                   subject to the ZAP policy.
