Nashoba Valley Rotary Brings Financial Reality to Nashoba RegionalHigh Sophomores On April 15, 271 sophomores at Nashoba Regional High School learneda little more about life ahead of them in the high school’s fourth annualfinancial RealityFair. Organized byNashobaValley Rotary withsupport from the highschool’s GuidanceDepartment and ClintonSavings Bank, theReality Fair presented afinanciallearningexperience for all 10thgrade students in aninteractive and fun format. As part of their careerexploration curriculum, the students researched acareer and related salary and were presented with a monthly pay stub, complete with taxes and student loans. The students then had to use theirnet earnings to purchase housing, utilities, insurance, transportation, food, clothing, and other personal items. They also had to deal with401(k) contributions, entertainment and recreation temptations, and a spinon the Wheel of Fortune, which represented life’s unexpected windfallsand financial fortunes or misfortunes. “All of the students were so engaged and seemed to learn something fromthis experience.” says Laura Spear, a member of NashobaValley Rotary and the event organizer. “Our volunteers had so much funworking with the students and seeing the light bulb ‘turn on’ when theyrealized how quickly a paycheck can be spent! One student even returnedtwo Porsches he had purchased.” About 60 volunteers from local businesses, the community, and variousRotary clubs staffed service tables to help teach the students the reality offinancial management. Nashoba Valley Rotary President Jim Stonecomments, "This is our fourth year of sponsoring the Reality Fair, and I amdelighted this event is now a tradition at the high school. I really appreciateour partnership with the high school and Clinton Savings Bank to make thislifechanging program a success. “ Nashoba Valley Rotary serves the towns of Lancaster, Bolton, and Stow, giving life to the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self." Congratulations! The 2016Council on Legislation was by allaccounts a great success, thanks to the strongcommitment, diligence and hardwork of its delegates in carryingout the Council’s critical role inRotary's governance.

The Council took a number offorward looking decisions onmembership and meetingflexibility and other items, including increasing annual percapita dues by $4.

Nine out of 10 Rotarians haveasked Rotary to provide moreservices, and it was clear to theCouncil, based on the fiveyearfinancial forecast presented bythe [Rotary International] Board, that without the dues increase, service to clubs and districtswould have to be decreased. Asa result of the Council’s action, dues to RI will increase by $4 peryear in each of the years 2017'18, 2018'19, and 2019'20. Theincrease will enable us toenhance Rotary’s website, improve online tools, addprograms and services, andmake other advancements tohelp clubs grow theirmembership and better servecommunities.

Please find moreinformation here about the duesincrease, why it was needed, and the impact it will have insupporting our organization’swork at all levels in the yearsahead. I encourage you to sharethis information with Rotarians inyour club, district, and region. You can also read a wrapup ofthe Council’s actionson rotary.org.

Rotary’s Dictionary Project Receives Rave Review FromFramingham Parent

"Good Afternoon, "I just wanted to pass on how absolutelythrilled the thirdgraders that I know fromHemenway Elementary School [inFramingham] were with their newdictionaries. My daughter could not stoptalking about it. She showed meeverything that was in it and told meabout the Rotary [Club] and was so

excited about her name being in it, proving that it belonged to her. I jokedwith the other moms that she was more excited by this than she was whenshe got an American Girl doll. "Another mother told me her son took his [dictionary] to bed that night andbreakfast the next morning. You made many children smile that day and itwas very much appreciated! "Thanks again,
