Easter

Favorite Frosty TreatsWith a clanging bell or a happy tune

to announce their arrival, ice creamtrucks have served frozen novelties forgenerations. Here are sometime-tested favorites:

Ice cream sandwiches. A New YorkCity pushcart peddler is credited withinventing the ice cream sandwich in1899. For a penny, the vendor placeda scoop of vanilla ice cream betweentwo graham wafers, offering a newway to enjoy the frozen treat

on the go.Popsicles. An 11-year-old California

boy named Frank Eppersonaccidentally made culinary history in1905 by leaving a cup of water withpowdered soda and a stirring stick outovernight. The concoction froze, andthe Popsicle was born. About twodecades later, Epperson sold hispatent for the “frozen drink on a stick,”and it took off across the country.

Ice cream bars. In 1920, a youngboy walked into the Iowa shop ofChristian Kent Nelson and couldn’tdecide whether to spend his nickel onice cream or a chocolate bar. SoNelson began working on a way tocombine the two, and after weeks ofwork, he created thechocolate-coated ice cream bar.
