Happy New Year and Welcome Back!! The break was just long enough to become relaxed and to spend time reflecting on what a terrific year it has been so far. One semester behind us and another ahead…what an exciting position. We have been working hard on finalizing both second semester and the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. Each new year brings new opportunities! We extended the break this year so please give us feedback on how it worked for your family. As the years have passed, I have become somewhat jaded when it comes to New Year’s Resolutions. I believe it is important to take stock and set some goals moving forward, but I also believe I must be realistic about what is truly doable. I conquered smoking several decades ago; gave up on losing weight; reluctantly added weekly exercise; and have failed miserably at maintaining better communication with my friends and family who live all over the world. Joe and I are constantly refining our communication patterns...that can’t wait for New Years. There is one goal, however, that continues to be on my rapidly dwindling resolution list. It is important to me not to forget to look for the positive in every day, the goodness in every person and the opportunity in every challenge. I have a tendency to set a goal, work doggedly at achieving it and once achieved, move on. It is easy for me to focus on what needs to be done and not take a celebratory look at what has been accomplished. I am prone to seeing “another” challenge as a speed bump rather than a launching pad. I do not consider myself to be a negative person, but I was raised by “the best generation” and they seldom took time to applaud or admire their accomplishments. That’s how I was brought up. I do realize that it is important to step back, once in a while, and give credit where credit is due…not necessarily for me, but for all those partners who have joined the journey and lightened the load in immeasurable ways! I will commit to that goal again this year! I encourage you to join me (unless you are already one of those balanced and wise folks) and begin this new year with healthy appreciation for the journey traveled. Yes, the road ahead is uncharted and there will be speed bumps/launching pads along the way. Perhaps our newly found or often renewed attitude will enhance our progress and sweeten the journey even more! True to form, we begin this semester with a few challenges, already! Our dear friend and valued teacher, Cecil Lancaster (HS) encountered some health issues over the holidays and will not be able to join us for the first month of the semester. He is in good hands and is expected to make a full recovery after his cardiac surgery this week. We have scheduled qualified support staff to fill in for him while he is out. Consistent with our business model, we refer to them as consultants, rather than substitutes. We will keep you and the students informed along the way. You may have noticed the veiled form in front of the Cougar Center. Stay tuned for the unveiling plans for our fabulous debut of Alumni Cass Thurston’s dynamic and impressive contribution to TCS. Before we become entrenched in this semester’s details, I would like to take a moment to thank you, on behalf of the TCS staff, for the many precious notes we all received before the holidays. Some were penned by you, articulate and powerful expressions of your appreciation for the work of the staff and the impact the TCS experience has on your child; others presented themselves in crooked but lovingly written expressions of appreciation from the teens themselves. All touched our hearts and fueled our continued dedication to each and every student with whom we are blessed to share this time together. Thanks, parents! Your PAC greeted us with Welcome Back packets of Hot Chocolate! What a treat!

SEE YOU AT HOMECOMING!!

"The Fat Boy Chronicles" reveals the emotion-

ally painful world obese and bullied teens ex-

perience in the face of a thin-obsessed

society. At age fourteen, 5'5 Jimmy weighs

187 pounds. The cruel taunts of his class-

mates make going to school or playing sports

Smart911 information can help police in numerous ways. Today when a child goes missing, it takes time for police to obtain a photo of the missing child. With Smart911 police will have that photo instantly and can begin a wide scale search sooner. Additionally, this service helps police locate you if your 9-1-1 call drops for any reason. This allows the police to locate you and your family more quickly during emergencies.

Tell Smart911 about your family’s medical issues – like heart conditions, allergies and stroke history. This way when 9-1-1 receives a call, EMS will arrive with the appropriate equipment. For those who have a family member with Alzheimer’s, Autism or who is deaf, this service helps as well. Instantly 9-1-1 knows the caller’s condition and location without having to rely on verbal communication.

ANNOUNCING TCS-TV

AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

January 2012 will bring a brand new television studio to the

Middle School at TCS. A team of students will work with Lynn to

create and deliver high quality morning announcements broadcast via

the internet.

The Tech TV Club will meet each morning at 7:15 a.m. to prepare

and rehearse the news program for live broadcast during the morning

announcements at 8:00 a.m. Student interns will learn how to create

and broadcast daily live “network-television-style” news programming

using Adobe’s Visual Communicator software. Internship opportunities

will include many aspects of TV news production including script-

writing, selecting graphics and music, camera operation, formatting the

graphics, directing, working with digital photography, setting up

lighting, checking microphone levels, designing green screen

backgrounds, and much more. Each intern will learn as they go rotating

among various jobs. They will then become the “teacher” as they tutor

the student moving into their job. The students will be involved in the

creative process from concept to broadcast. Each day will be a new

and exciting learning experience.

If you are interested in being a part of this exciting project,

applications will be available when you return from the winter break.

If you have any questions, contact Lynn at [email protected].
