Welcome to Spring! Although we really haven’t had a winter and I fear we are jumping into Summer, we can’t complain about the weather! The only thing predictable about Georgia weather is its unpredictability! When it comes to teenagers, however, we can all predict that this kind of weather brings out more energy and enthusiasm! This week will mark the release of our baby trout into the Chattahoochee River. This program is in its second year here at TCS and it has been very beneficial. The opportunity to experience firsthand the development of a fish from egg to fingerling has been a remarkable experience for staff and students alike. Of course our science classes study life sciences and the impact of environment on all sorts of life forms, but when you have baby fish that are completely dependent on the nutrients, temperature and quantity of water that we are responsible for providing, it really brings the lesson home! Our students have been admirably attentive to their responsibilities. The T-shirt has been designed and we are ready to release them into the wild! This Saturday we will join several other schools that have participated in this project and bid our babies God Speed!

We are also preparing the many end of year celebrations. If you have not yet volunteered to help your PAC (Parent Association Committee) with their numerous responsibilities, you can still jump right in! As you know, a portion of your tuition goes to your membership (just $50) in this organization. The leadership team of about eight parents organizes a variety of appreciation, informative and celebratory activities throughout the year. They depend on a variety of resources from the parent group at large. You will find opportunities in this week’s packet. Please consider joining them in their efforts to expand and enhance the TCS experience.

Our Glitter event is a month away! For those who have attended, this is a much awaited event! Not only is it a “you do not want to miss this” event, but the funds support our tuition assistance program. First, let’s talk about the event. Every year we gather three hundred or more fun loving and generous folks in our Cougar Center that has been transformed into another world, and party, party, party! The decorations are always phenomenal, the food is divine and the auction is beyond belief. From the first Glitter event almost 20 years ago, we have been the envy of our local nonprofits. As Joe and I attend events during the year, we see folks “borrowing” ideas they saw first at Glitter…but nobody, I mean nobody, does an auction the way we do! Bring your friends and they will want to come back next year! Let’s fill up The Cougar Center and come together for our students!

Last year we turned away almost thirty students who would have blossomed here at TCS. Although we offered many of them some amount of much needed tuition assistance, we could not offer them enough. Without that help, the promise of academic and social success is denied. Recent economic and social trends have impacted the world of independent schools in very powerful ways. All organizations are experiencing financial strains. However, when the future of your child is at stake, the situation is magnified. Most of our families know that unless they can afford smaller classes, hands on methods and a system that supports their teen while they learn the lessons that build a strong foundation for success, the quality of life for that child will be forever diminished. Think about that….forever diminished. You know what I am talking about: you had that same decision!

Whether you support Glitter or the school’s Annual Fund, surely you can do your part to see that no child is turned away…that no opportunity is lost…that no future of success is denied. Share the success that is TCS with others by helping us help others.

Key Annual Fund Update

53%... of TCS Parents have either made a pledge or contribution to the 2011-2012 Key Annual Fund as of March 15, 2012! We’re over half way towards our goal of 100% parent participation in the Key Annual Fund AND we’re well on our way towards our goal of $130,000 raised to support The Cottage School’s mission and goals.

Our Annual Fund Class Representatives will be making calls SOON to secure 100% parent participation. They look forward to talking with you and answering any questions you may have. However, for your convenience, a contribution form is below, or you may make your contribution online through our secure server on our website.

Attaining 100% parent participation in the Annual Fund opens the door to the program-enhancing grants that are available through Foundations. Successful completion of future campus improvements depend upon strong support from the Foundation Community.

You, as parents, hold the Keys to Our Success as we approach these sources of funding!

ALLEN’S JOURNEY FOR PHIL

As Phil Parker continues to be challenged on his ‘Wellness Walk’ against multiple myeloma, there is another challenge that TCS high school teacher and coach, Allen McAdams, is beginning later this month. In Phil’s honor, starting on March 31st, Allen will be trekking from The Cottage School to Florida State University, where Phil attended college. For Allen, this endeavor will be done via running, kayaking, and cycling over 350 miles. This is Allen’s personal endeavor to motivate people to pledge time or a meal to assist Phil and Anne during these months of treatment and recovery. At this point, Allen is looking for our support in this endeavor. By pledging your time in two hour increments, multiple needs for the Parkers can be met. Some of the tasks that will need to be performed at their home over the next several months include, but are not limited to:

Clearing pine straw islands

Weed killing

Taking dead limbs to the street for removal

Transplanting volunteer Magnolia trees

Spreading pine straw

Helping with maintenance of a garden

Sanding and painting small outside areas of the house

Washing/vacuuming vehicles (Honda and Pathfinder)

After Allen’s completion of this trek, you will be contacted with how best your time pledge can be utilized and the coordination of timing will be determined. Anne is keeping up with the inside housework because guests are not allowed at this point in Phil’s recovery. Signing up to take a meal to Phil and Anne is a simple task that can be accomplished at the following link: http://www.TakeThemAMeal.com Recipient Last Name: Parker Password: parker

After considering this opportunity, please return the following form to the front desk of either the high school or middle school. Thank you.

Name: _____________________________________ To support Allen McAdam’s journey in honor of Phil Parker’s “Wellness Walk”, I pledge ____________hours of time (in 2 hour increments) after the completion of Allen’s trek in order to assist Phil and Anne with necessary tasks during Phil’s recovery. AND/OR I have signed up through the above website to take a meal to the Parkers on the following date. __________________________
