Although technology has its challenges, there is a definite up side! Recently our campus has been focusing on the risks involved with inappropriate use of technology. I find myself and those around me in a perpetual “twitter” as we try to learn new skills, master new devices and rework our communication skills. However, when technology works for me, it is a delight! As our graduates leave high school and move along their path toward success, marriage, children and such, we may lose touch for a while, but sooner or later, they re-emerge! I really do not have much time to sit and follow Facebook for hours, but the contacts I have there with some of our alumni are precious to me. Whether they have remained in the Metro Atlanta area or moved away, FB allows us to stay connected. I follow one young man who is pursuing a career in acting. Several have married and have children. What a thrill it is to see the pictures of their families and hear about their career successes. In addition, several of our alumni are returning to school to expand or complete their degrees. Having the ability to follow the milestones in their lives is a benefit unforeseen twenty-nine years ago when we started the school. In the early days we found our alumni mostly by accident. When we were planning our younger son’s wedding in 1999 we were greeted by the assistant event planner who had graduated from TCS several years earlier. Once we recovered from the joy of seeing Erin again, we also breathed a sigh of relief. One could not find a more organized and creative planner than Erin is. We had seen her talent during her high school years and were gratified to see her making a living doing what she loved! Our early landscaping for the cottages was designed and installed by one of our graduates who went on to form his own landscaping business. Joe and I always look forward to eating at one of our favorite Roswell restaurants where we can visit with Megan. She has worked there for years to support her real love, writing children’s books. We are following the graduate school adventures as alumnus, Alex, completes his master’s at Emory University. And what is the latest connection? A few weeks ago, as I was greeting attendees at our weekly Rotary meeting, I looked up to see a familiar face from our very early years! Careen graduated in 1988 while pursuing a career in modeling. She is now in digital communications and enjoying her family! When I think about all the initial interviews with students and their parents (and those always stick in my head and heart), I recall the frustration and disappointment that mark each and every one. Regardless of the calendar year, the diagnosis or the individual talents of each student, I get a clear picture of their dreams that have dimmed. On graduation day we see the promise that fuels those dreams. Years later, when I see how far our kids go when they take off from our TCS launch pad, I feel like such a proud mom!! There really is no surprise at the amazing distances our alumni travel toward their goals, but there is a pure sense of satisfaction to see them achieve their dreams!

Remember!

It’s Re-enrollment Time!

The TCS staff is busy creating

the foundation on which our

annual programming

depends. As you know, a

major component in this

process is student

enrollment. Since we tailor

such a large portion of our

program to the individual

student, we need to know

for whom we are planning.

Please return your

re-enrollment contract and

fee to Sandy McKinney at

your earliest convenience.

original email containing

your contract or if it has

been misplaced, please

Cottage School has updated our wireless system. Our current and continuing

policy regarding student access has not changed. Access is available for high

school students who have Level 2 or 3 status and have a permission slip signed by

a parent/guardian on file with The Cottage School technology coordinator,

Summer Howell. Student must also be clear from any access holds due to

privilege suspensions. Access the new form at http://tinyurl.com/oyaamyo or the

form is under the Parent tab on the TCS website. You may direct any comments

I am very delighted for the opportunity to teach high school science and

math here at The Cottage School. I have been working with youth for over

fifteen years in a variety of career roles. I attended Purdue University and

Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI) where I

graduated with a Bachelors of Science. I have a wide range of experiences

teaching experiential education, team building and leadership programs. I

live with my husband in Cobb County with our boxador dog named “7”. My

family lives in California, Arizona, and Indiana. I enjoy gardening, hiking,

camping, volunteering, and traveling. I am passionate about children and

travel to Haiti to care for orphans and teach self-sustainability principles to

the community. I look forward to mentoring and developing our youth here

at The Cottage School!
