As a child growing up in Melrose Park, art educator Brenda Latzke says she can’t remember a time when she wasn’t sitting

on the floor with a pad of paper in her lap drawing.Later, that love of art lined up with her interest

in becoming an elementary education teacher. Post college, those interests became the conduit for working with adults and children with special

needs while living, working and volunteering in special needs classrooms and hospital programming in England.

In 1988, to better reach those students, the art teacher earned a graduate degree to become an art therapist, as well.

Once stateside again, Latzke employed her skillsets via various jobs in the Chicago area, eventually earning an MEd in special education from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1991.

Since 2000, the Oak Park mom has been a fifth grade art and special education teacher at Roosevelt Middle School in River Forest, plus an art teacher for students with special needs

at District 90’s Willard Elementary School.

On a recent Sunday, with her dog Oliver nearby, Latzke did a self-portrait for the Journal.

How does doing art benefit children with special needs?

Art gives them a way where they can be open to expression at wherever they are at. Sometimes it may just be exploring the materials, which is more of a sensory thing, and other times it is getting whatever is on the inside of them, out, exploring their emotions.

What is your approach? The most important thing is giving choices,

making them feel like they are more in charge, that we are not making decisions for them. Depending on their level, some are more able to express their emotions in their art work. For others, it is more of a basic level of sensory exploration.

What’s fun to do with anyone?(In smaller groups) I will bring in a bucket of

snow, and give them the pans of snow and they paint it with a very diluted tempera paint, or water color, so it looks like a tie-dyed…beautiful, snow cone.

Any advice?Parents should provide for the opportunity for

the art materials to be there for their child to use. Certainly, having basic supplies such as crayons, Cray-Pas, tempera paints, water colors, play dough, rollers, adaptive cutting tools, paper…and to a point, don’t be afraid of them making a mess. Cray-Pas are an oil based crayon, with a richer pigment, so you don’t have to press as hard to create something rich and strong.

What else?

Give them time. Over time, what they do can be significant. Just something as simple as a student making a mark on a piece of paper can seem like a small thing to the regular person on the street. But for a student who has no independent action like that, something as small as making a mark can be significant. Doing art can be a really important way for them to communicate.

In art classes at Irving Elementary School in Oak Park, choice is the rule.

Because, since January, in Emily Tague’s art room, working away at designated art stations have been students choosing to do everything from drawing, painting and collage, to weaving and creating paper sculptures.

Tague calls this art making “Choice-based art,” and its a new student directed approach she testing in her 2nd through 5th grade art classes. It’s all about her teaching them the ins and outs of using art tools and materials, then encouraging the youngsters to go at it, with or without input from her.

Also called TAB (Teaching Artistic Behaviors), Tague says she first observed it in action in art classrooms at District 97’s two middle schools. In addition, last summer, while on maternity leave, she took a workshop where the possibility of implementing it at Irving started making sense.

“It is really cool, because it is their own idea, rather than me telling them what to do, and they can be creative, and decide to make what they want to make, and what they are interested in,” Tague says. “So, I have found that the kids are

much more excited to come to art because they are sharing ideas, collaborating on projects, and problem solving together…making things that are so much more important to them.”

One of her students, fourth grader Josiah Jennison, has set his sights on constructing a 3-D city, inspired by the paper sculpted roller coaster his tablemates James McConnell and Henry Skalla are creating.

“It’s freestyle, technically,” says Jennison. “I am doing a 3-D paper city, and right now I am working on a car. It has a paper arch, but it is not suppose to be St. Louis. I made a park over here, a pond, a climbing wall, a tube you can crawl through, which is a slide,” he says.

Nearby Teagan Drumm is assembling a textural collage, using her first name as the starting point, whereas Dwight Williams, a soccer player and goalie himself, is lost in the art of soccer. His project is similar to a pop-up art book, he says.

“I have an announcer sitting right here, talking into a microphone. I have people playing soccer, and the goalie is right there,” Williams says.

Irving principal John Hodge says he is thrilled with the “Choice-based art” approach, as the

student artwork covering the school’s hallways and classroom walls at Irving has always had a big impact on the building’s climate and atmosphere.

“A lot of kids are inspired by what another kid is doing, and that is the point,” Tague says. “It has been really fun for me to see how they work together, talk to each other, and give each other ideas.”

Meanwhile, Skalla says they are wrapping up the roller coaster project, which features a dragon’s head with a flame coming out of its mouth, a volcano and a giant ghost head.

“I wanted to do a giant ghost tunnel, but Henry decided we didn’t have enough space,” McConnell says with a shrug.

Longfellow Elementary School fourth grader, Eva Spangler, loves digging into art teacher Jenny Raia’s

classroom scrap bin.“Those are my favorite materials

because I like to choose the colors and textures and make lots of collages,” Spangler says. “I actually wish we had art more often, like maybe two or three hours every week, ‘cause kids need a chance to be creative, and let everything out, you know.”

Spangler says she assuages and sublimates all that at home, by regularly booting up the software program Photoshop to create “very fun” virtual collages of flowers, penguins, pandas and greyhounds, her latest themes.

Michael Robot, however, says he is drawn to building anything out of paper, clay, rolled up old magazines…whatever.

Thanks to what he’s learned from veteran art teacher Aria about the principals of proportion and perspective, he has built a likeness of the Willis Tower out of wood.

“Yeah, in Ms. Raia’s art class I like the 3-D stuff we are doing, especially what we are

working on now, which is a 3-D lizard’s tail,” says fourth grader Henry Thompson from a nearby seat. “And then we will make the legs and then the head.”

Likewise, classmate Madeleine Niewoehner says she “likes how we can do 3-D things in this class, and have learned how to make them link, because when you do that it is like a slinky,” she says, demonstrating it.

Inspiring her students to actually see, feel and touch art in all its forms first, before choosing to do art by touching the flat screen of a computer, is this 10-year, tenured art teacher’s aim. Although, the use of technology, is a go-to tool in her classroom, too.

“It’s nice because when we are talking about drawing a figure, for example, I was able to talk to the kids about careers for artists where they would need to be able to draw the figure, things like fashion design and sports illustrations, and because I have a smart board, I am able to pull up examples very quickly and project the images of different fashion designers,

for example, and show them what the designers’ sketches actually look like, because we were talking about proportions and how you draw the human body,” Raia says.

And so, in her classroom at Longfellow, art goes and grows.

“I am a very firm believer that kids should not be having virtual art drawing experiences until they have authentic, real world drawing experiences,” says Raia, who is also an Oak Park mom with two young school age children. “It’s great to have art programs on a computer for kids as an option, but I would rather see them doing some kind of photo shopping or moviemaking, or digital collage…and there are some great apps that do just that. They are very straight forward and allow kids to put together these really interesting compositions.”
