The origins of the Cold War begin as WWII is winding down. It becomes apparent that Allies; The United States and the Soviet Union have a different vision for the world after the war.

At the conclusion of WWII, there are two superpowers; the United States and the Soviet Union

The war is still going in February 1945. However, it appears the allies will now win. The three chief Allied leaders—Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States, Prime

Minister Winston Churchill of the United Kingdom, and Premier, Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union—meet at Yalta to plan the final defeat and occupation of Nazi Germany. This is FDR’s last big function before he dies.

Germany has surrendered and the Allied leaders meet again. One Major change Harry Truman is now the president and takes over for FDR following his death.

At Potsdam Joe Stalin went back on his agreements at Yalta.

Potsdam ended any sense of friendship between the USA & USSR & began an era of bitterness & distrust called the Cold War.

At the conclusion of WWII, the world has two superpowers, The United States and the Soviet Union.

Prime Minister Churchill coins the term the “Iron Curtain”. It’s an imaginary line drawn through Europe and on one side all the countries have dictators and are becoming communist.

The other side features democracy and an economic systems based upon capitalism.

Stalin during his reign as the Soviet leader kills between 9 to 20 million of his country’s citizens. He was a mean man.

America concludes they cannot make communism go away so they adopt a policy of containment to try and control the spread of communism. Think of it like a coffee cup. With the cup the coffee is controlled and all in one area. No cup the coffee goes everywhere.

Obviously, the Soviet Union thinks they are right and pressures smaller countries to become communist and Soviet allies.

The U.S. comes up with the Truman Doctrine. We give lots of money and military aid to countries the Soviets are pressuring, so they do not become communist.

Other countries around Europe start to say “Hey, what about us!”

Therefore, The United States comes up with the Marshall plan, $13 billion dollars to help Western Europe recover from the war.

Not every country gets the same amount. Countries that are close allies to us or suffered greater devastation get more.

To protect themselves counties begin joining different alliances. The U.S. joins NATO and is still a member to this day.

The communist countries sign the Warsaw Pact.
