The Cold War Expands

Truman went from being a hero for the way he handled Europe. He was then viewed as a scapegoat in Asia, as everyone blamed him for countries becoming communist

The Domino Theory was a big deal back then, the belief that if one country would become communist its neighboring countries would also become communist. Domino theory is based off Dominos, we have all played with them and stacked them on end and given a push. One falls, then another, then another , then another and so on and so on.

Prior to WWII Korea belonged to Japan. Korea was originally one country. The Soviet Union and the rest of the Allies could not agree how to govern Korea.

Consequently Korea was split in half with the dividing line being the 38th parallel. The Soviet Union supports North Korea and communism.

The United States supports South Korea with demoracy and a free enterprise economic system

The war starts when North Korean forces cross over the 38th parallel and attack South Korea. South Korea offers minimal resistance and are dricven into a small corner of the penuisla.

The newly formed United Nations feel this is unfair. The United Nations puts together an armed force to protect South Korea. The force is primarily compromise of United States troops. These troops are lead by U.S. General Douglas MacArthur. Yep, the same one who was the supreme Allied commander in the Pacific during WWII.

Under MacCarthur the South Koreans reverse what the Nrth Koreans have done and pushes them all the way to the Chinese border.

China gets nervous because the United States is literally at their border with an armed military.

MacArthur wants to invade Chin and get rid of this communism stuff, once and for all. Truman says no as it will start WW III.

They argue and Truman eventually relieves MacArthur from his role of being the leader of the United Nations forces.

In 1953 the two Koreas call a truce. They reset the original

Boundaries of the 38th parallel as if nothing has happened.
