EVERY SENIOR HAS A STORY Allene Taylor Thomas (1924- ) Biography

Allene Taylor Thomas, an Ellis County Texas native, was born January 21, 1924. Origi-nally, Allene wanted to be a Beautician after she graduated from Lincoln High School,

and prepared herself by attending, and graduating from the Madam C.J. Walker Beau-

ty College in Dallas, Texas. Allene then met, and married, Edgar Thomas in December

1957, and became co-owner of the Community Funeral Home. Allene subsequently attended the

Dallas Institute College of Mortuary Science receiving her Embalmers Certificate, and Funeral Di-

rectors License. With this achievement, Allene became the First African American Woman

Licensed Embalmer in Ellis County. Allene operated the Community Funeral Home from 1957 –

2003, and continues to keep her certification active as a licensed Funeral Director, and Embalmer. Allene currently resides in Waxahachie, Texas, where she is an active member of the New Mount

Zion Missionary Baptist Church. As a member she has served in many capacities; Usher Board

Member, Choir Member, Trustee Board Member, Pastor’s Aid President, and participated in the 55

Plus Program.

Allene’s belief in re-investing in her community stands strong. She has been a member of the

Royal Art Charity Club, Citizens for Progress, NAACP, a Certified Notary Public, and active Commu-

nity Activist. In addition, Allene has served as Chairperson for several political candidates during

their campaigns, as a Voter’s Registration Clerk, and a Precinct Chairperson for many years.

ZUMBA NEWS: We certainly have fun dancing in class, but we

also want to stay safe. Here are some Zumba tips for you: 1.

Hydrate. Drinking plenty of water is always important, but it is

especially true when we exercise. 2. If a dance move hurts,

don’t do it. We do not want any injuries. 3. Know your target

heart rate for exercise. For example, if you are 55 years old,

you want to aim for 83 to 140 beats for minute. If you are 65,

the target is between 78-132. (The range is due to factors such

as medications and individual differences). If your heart rate

gets too high, lower your arms until your rate comes down. If

you want to increase your heart rate, keep those arms up. 4. If

you have a bad knee or shoulder, modify your movements to

account for that. After class I am glad to show you modifications

that may benefit you. As long as we are moving, we are getting

a benefit, so… Keep dancing. Katherine

Effective April 1, 2016, the pur-chase price of an individual lunch ticket will increase from $4.00 to $5.00 per meal. A five day lunch ticket will be increased by $ 2.00. All other discounted meal pro-grams will remain the same.
