No Static At AllAlan S. ChartockWAMC President and C.E.O.
There is one sure thing about WAMC and that is thatlife here is always interesting. Nothing is static. Weknow, for example, that the first hour of TheRoundtable is a tremendous success. Wherever I go,I hear from people who make it a must-do to listento the panel on The Roundtable. Everyone reacts, some more strongly than others. Each of theparticipants has developed a following and each ofus has some detractors.
Professor Rosemary Armao has become a great star. She has an extraordinary background as a workingjournalist, editor, author and professor. She hasnever been afraid to take chances or to argue withanyone when she thinks she is right. She statesunequivocally that she is a Hillary fan but on manyoccasions, she has argued that Mrs. Clinton hasmade mistakes. As a result, she'll get occasionalletters that seem to take her to task for not blindlyfollowing the Hillary Clinton band wagon.
Occasionally, we receive mail from people who saythey will no longer contribute to the station because

Stuffed, yet ready for more.
Well, WAMC-land, I’ve already been working onmy stuffing recipe (carb count be damned!), and I,for one, can’t wait to spend some long overduetime with my family, baking and catching up.Make sure you tune in on Thanksgiving and‘ThanksFriday’ because we’ll have some greatprograms to listen to while you’re cooking yourtofurky or turduken and heating up those leftovers.
Beginning at 9AM, Giving Thanks: A Celebrationof Fall, Food & Gratitude will treat us with musicand stories for Thanksgiving. We’ll hear fromthree special guests during this two-hour special. The first is an artist in the kitchen and an artist atthe piano: Christopher Kimball, founder, editor, and publisher of Cook's Illustrated Magazine andhost of public television's most-watched cookingshow, America's Test Kitchen. He'll take us to hisVermont farm for a New England Thanksgivingand talk about the experiences for which he's mostgrateful.
Then Stephen Hough, world famous concertpianist, composer, prize-winning poet andMacArthur genius, will share his wonderful essay"Thanksgiving for Thanksgiving" which he wrotefor the London Telegraph. We'll also hear excerptsfrom his favorite Thanksgiving author, WillaCather, plus his new Grieg album. And last, butcertainly not least, Patrick Stewart will readautumn poems from John Keats and AntonioVivaldi.
Stay with us at 11AM for the perennialThanksgiving with Cantus. Cantus is one of the

of something they heard one of us say on the air. Most ofthe time that original anger dissipates and the letter writersreturn to the family. This happens a lot when ProfessorHerb London speaks his conservative mind for a fewminutes every week. I have also had the opposite mail frompeople who think the station is too "liberal." Some folkswho self-identify as liberal think that we are too corporateor too conservative.
Recently, we have heard from a few people who take issuewith NPR accepting what appears to be pro-frackingunderwriting. When I respond that no one has done moreon this subject than WAMC, with both sides beingexplored, they write back admitting that this is true but thenthey argue that we should bring NPR to heel for taking themoney.
We’ve also heard from people who are appropriatelyworried about the pipelines that will carry gas over the landthat they love. WAMC has continually done stories on thepipeline crisis. We have received mail from people whofeel passionately about the matter. Most make the veryarguments that we have explored including the reasonableissues like the methods that are used to get the oil out of theground; the possibility of leaks; the argument thatAmericans won't benefit from the oil since much, if not all,of it will be shipped out of the country; and the ways inwhich the land which the pipelines will traverse will beacquired.
It is very frustrating to be accused of not doing what wehave in fact done not once but many times. Recently Ireceived a copy of a letter that an anti-pipeline advocatehad written to some of his colleagues in the anti-pipelinestruggle, suggesting that it was not productive to becreating enemies where friends now existed. I was veryappreciative of that effort.
Finally this month, sad news in that long time WAMCerDona Frank has decided way too early to retire. Dona is sosmart and so productive that I know that she will find a lotto keep her going. After 18 years, I know we will all missher skills, determination and know how. Fortunately, ourDirector of Operations, Patrick Cooney is taking over andwe will be hiring a chief engineer to fill his spot. WAMC isfortunate to have a wonderful, strong staff or what thebaseball players might call a terrific bench. Dona Frank hasdone a lot of mentoring and made sure that her skills havebeen transferred to a wonderful group of people who arebreaking all records in bringing support to the radiostations. So, I'll see you all next month and we'll talk aboutbreaking events .- Alan

At noon, we’ll join the nation in airing Arlo Guthrie’s“Alice’s Restaurant” then head into Midday Magazine. At 1PM you can enjoy a little more Arlo and hear Alan’s2012 conversation with him about his career and the songthat keeps on giving.
We’re going to shake things up a little at 2PM, and bringyou the hour long special Van Morrison: Duets. Thoughit’s taken a while, Van Morrison never gave up on hisidea to sing duets with some of his favorite artists. Onceit got rolling, the singers came to Morrison – includingMavis Staples, Michael Buble, Joss Stone Taj Mahal,Mark Knopfler and more. Throughout the hour, we’llhear from Van Morrison himself about how he chose thesongs from his vast catalog to rework as duets, plus songsfrom the album.
The specials aren’t over yet. We know you needsomething to get you through the craziness of BlackFriday. At 9AM, we’re going to help you save some $$this shopping season with Marketplace Takes Care ofHoliday Business. During this hour, the MarketplaceWeekend team looks at where the holidays meet money.Host Lizzie O'Leary is joined by some of APM's biggestnames to explore that intersection, tell some stories, andhelp you financially navigate the holiday season.
What are you grateful for? It's a more important questionthan you might think. At 10AM, we’ll explore TheScience of Gratitude and how feeling grateful may be thetrue key to health and happiness. The program is narratedby the Academy Award-winning Susan Sarandon.
How many of us have had that friend or relative who justdoesn’t get that you push in your chair when getting upfrom the table or decides that it’s proper to wear their hatindoors? The holiday season can be a minefield when itcomes to good behavior. At 11AM, we’ll have just thething for you. Awesome Holiday Etiquette is anentertaining way to learn how you can take some of thestress out of being social during the holidays. HostsLizzie Post and Dan Post Senning - the great-great-grandchildren of etiquette icon Emily Post - will talk withfriends and special guests about etiquette throughout theseason - from food to decorating to social situations. They will answer etiquette questions from listeners andinvite storytellers to tell the tales of their biggest Holidaywins (or fails).
Rounding out our two days of specials is a new one hourconversation between Alan Chartock and a CulinaryInstitute of America chef, who will advise you on what to
do with all of those leftovers. You know the deal, youhave some candied yams left, a couple spoons of greenbean casserole, a ton of turkey, yet no gravy… theproblems go on and on, and they will help you reinventyour leftovers into dishes that will become annualtraditions.
So, may your fat pants have plenty of room to expand(mine certainly will), the squirrels not steal your corn andpumpkin decorations, and you arrive at your destinationssafely. - Katie

Don’t let volatile markets shake up your investment strategyProvided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas E. Brockley
After six years of fairly steady gains, the markets are, once again, showing us thatstock prices can also fall – and fall fast. As an investor who is depending on yourinvestment portfolio to help meet some key goals, such as a comfortableretirement, how should you respond to this recent round of market turbulence?
First, it’s important to understand just what’s causing the turmoil. As always, market movements contain at least some elements of mystery, but most expertsattribute the current volatility to a combination of these factors: a major slowdownin China’s economic growth, a sharp decline in oil prices and the anticipation ofthe Federal Reserve raising short-term interest rates.
But it’s equally as important to look beyond the headlines of the day. Despite whatis happening elsewhere in the world, the U.S. economy is reasonably solid:Employers are adding jobs at a pretty good pace, wages are rising and home pricesare up. Plus, corporate earnings – a key driver of stock prices – are generallyhealthy, though perhaps not as robust as many investors would like to see.Furthermore, consumer debt is at manageable levels and interest rates, evenfactoring in a small bump, are still at near historic lows. To sum up, we’re in a lotbetter shape than we were heading into 2008 and early 2009 – a period in whichthe financial markets fell into a deep hole.
For many investors – particularly those very close to retirement -- simplyunderstanding what is really going on doesn’t make the recent portfolio declinesany more palatable. Still, now may not be the best time to make any drasticchanges to your portfolio.
The recent volatility may seem severe, but it’s hardly unprecedented. The financialmarkets have experienced many “corrections” (declines in stock prices of at least10 percent from their recent highs), and after every single one, eventuallyrecovered all the lost ground and then moved to new heights. And we may havebeen overdue, too: Before this downturn, the S & P 500 had gone more than 1,400days without a 10 percent correction. It’s far more typical for the market toexperience a 10 percent to 20 percent correction roughly every one to two years.
But staying calm doesn’t mean being inactive. Keep in mind that a marketcorrection, by definition, means that prices have dropped for most stocks, including the ones that represent strong companies with favorable prospects. And acorrection is often accelerated by investors selling shares to supposedly cut theirlosses. But when prices are down, it’s actually a good moment to buy. Now maybe an excellent time to purchase quality stocks, at bargain prices.
You also may want to take this opportunity to consider whether you need tofurther diversify your holdings. In a downturn, just about everybody takes a hit,but if you were affected particularly strongly, you might be over-concentrated injust a few types of stocks. You can help reduce the impact of volatility on yourportfolio by owning a mix of domestic and international stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and possibly even“alternative” investment vehicles, including real estate and commodities, such asprecious metals.
Ultimately, you don’t have to scuttle your long-term investment strategy merely onthe basis of a few bad months in the market. If you’ve created a strategy thatreflects your risk tolerance, time horizon and financial goals, and if you makeneeded adjustments over time, you’ll give yourself the ability to look past today’sheadlines. This article is provided by Thomas E.
