from alan ALAN CHARTOCK

Every year, I offer my fearless predictions for the coming months. The rules, as always, are simple. Sometimes I really don’t want something to happen so I predict an event in the hope of putting the triple whammy on it in or-der to prevent it from occurring. Sometimes I do want it to happen so I predict it will, and sometimes I really believe that it will happen. It is always your job to try to figure out which is which.

So, I predict:

WAMC will buy its main broadcast tower, thus securing the future of the station. It will not be easy. We will have to go to each of you to make it happen but I predict that the outpouring of love, support and understanding will be so great that the Herculean task will be accomplished. Many of you will dig deep because you absolutely understand how essential it is to meet the goal which, of course, will be on top of one of our three regular fund drives. There will be an awareness that we are all in this together. These are the words that make up the credo of who we are and how we have defied all odds to make the best public radio station in the country. We did it together out of love and commitment.

The WAMC family will grow as staff members continue to have babies. One couple will have twins and will name them after two of our 29 stations. One will be called Ticon-deroga, the other Beacon.

The right side of the David A. Galletly newsroom will fea-ture a sign that reads, “The Right Side.”

Donald Trump will order the FCC to strip WAMC of any federal support. I will say, “Bring it on, we’re ready. That’s why we have the First Amendment Fund.”

An internet troll will be discovered to be writing WAMC un-der assumed names. We will be amazed when we figure out who it is.

Murray the Dog will be honored by the ASPCA. His cita-tion will read, “Murray has brought honor to dogs every-where.”

Two WAMC staff members will fall in love. Attorney Jeff Honeywell will be consulted.

Heads will continue to roll at National Public Radio. Jarl Mohn, the currently on-leave head man will resign be-cause of continuing health problems. His resignation will be met with deep regret on the part of those who have developed special relationships with him.

The NPR business meetings which require a quorum of stations will continue to have difficulty getting necessary numbers to move forward to do business despite all kinds of questionable methods of meeting a quorum.

The Berkshire Eagle’s Larry Parnass will be nominated for and actually receive a Pulitzer Prize for his investiga-tive reporting on the Berkshire Museum’s attempts to sell their most important and expensive paintings.

In its efforts to cut costs at WAMC, a blue ribbon panel will suggest that the station start charging for coffee. It won’t happen.

The Mayor of Albany will finally do something about the prostitution problem that exists on Central Avenue. The pimps who follow the women around are truly scary.

WAMC will receive an award for being the most diverse broadcaster in our area.

The police will finally patrol the bus station out in front of WAMC where loitering, smoking (not allowed), urination and fights are not all that uncommon.

A listener will make a false accusation about having heard a dirty word on the radio.

The WAMC Jeep will use the winch on its front to save the occupants of a car that drove off the road.

To make ends meet, Ray Graf will become a standup co-median playing the clubs. He’ll spend a lot of time imitat-ing me talking about Fire Island and Camp Bronx House.

You, dear listeners will have a happy, healthy and safe New Year.

program notes KRISTIN GILBERT The Metropolitan Opera 2017/2018 Saturday Matinee broadcasts return to WAMC starting December 2nd at 1PM. The operas will air every Saturday at 1PM until May 5th, 2018.

December 2nd, 2017 at 1 p.m. — Verdi Requiem (Verdi)For the first time since 2008, James Levine conducts a special series of concerts of Verdi’s great mass, written in memory of Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni. The com-pany has assembled a quartet of extraordinary soloists to join the incomparable Met Orchestra and Chorus: Kras-simira Stoyanova, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Aleksandrs Antonenko, and Ferruccio Furlanetto.

December 9th, 2017 at 1 p.m. — The Magic Flute (Mo-zart) The Met’s English-language family version of Mozart’s enchanting masterpiece has become one of the city’s essential holiday traditions. Evan Rogister conducts Julie Taymor’s spellbinding production, with special holi-day pricing and a 100-minute running time. Nathan Gunn reprises his much-loved portrayal of the bird-catcher Papageno.

December 16th, 2017 at 1 p.m. —Norma (Bellini)“Ponselle, Milanov, Sutherland, Callas … after last night, Radvanovsky can add her name to the list,” declared the Huffington Post when Sondra Radvanovsky made her Met role debut as Norma in 2013. The 2017–18 season opens with a new production of Bellini’s masterpiece, starring Radvanovsky as the Druid priestess and Joyce DiDonato as her archrival, Adalgisa—a casting coup for bel canto fans. Tenor Joseph Calleja is Pollione, Norma’s unfaithful lover, and Carlo Rizzi conducts. Sir David McVicar’s evocative production sets the action deep in a Druid forest where nature and ancient ritual rule.

December 23rd, 2017 at 1 p.m. — Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart) An exceptional ensemble of performers—includ-ing Ailyn Pérez, Nadine Sierra, Isabel Leonard, Luca Pisaroni, Mariusz Kwiecien, and Ildar Abdrazakov—share the stage in Mozart’s comic yet profound look at human nature and one crazy day in a wealthy Spanish house-hold. Acclaimed Mozartean maestro Harry Bicket con-ducts Richard Eyre’s high-spirited production.

December 30th, 2017 at 1 p.m. — The Merry Widow (Lehár)Susan Graham sings the title role of the fabulous woman of the world who sets out to conquer glamorous old Paris and get the one thing that has eluded her—a commitment from her playboy first love. Lehár’s delightful score of lush waltzes and beautiful ballads will sparkle with a support-ing cast of Andriana Chuchman, Paul Groves, and the inimitable Sir Thomas Allen. Ward Stare conducts.

Double H Ranch

The Double H Ranch, located in town Lake Luzerne, NY, is gearing up for another exciting and empowering ski season with their Adaptive Winter Sports Program. Established in 1998, the Adaptive Winter Sports Program offers children ages 6-16 dealing with chronic and life-threatening illnesses the opportunity to participate in various winter sports in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains FREE of charge with necessary equipment provided. Theirr winter program is meant to help teach kids a valuable lifelong skill, while also creating a memorable experience for the entire family.

Patricia Dalton Fennell, Albany Health Management Associates, Inc.

To outsiders, it might look like Patricia Dalton Fennell leads a few separate lives. In science, she’s a clinician, therapist, researcher, and published expert on the understanding and treatment of chronic illness. In the arts, she’s a jazz musi-cian and producer. In service, she works in restorative justice, cares for dying patients and their families, and treats survivors of trauma. But throughout her “careers,” Fennell has found that the worlds frequently collide, and that the skills she has honed in one field have proven surprisingly applicable to the others. Science projects often resemble design projects, and solutions to artistic quandaries often benefit from scientific structure. Or as she puts it: “The same kind of ‘aha’ that happens to you in science, is the kind of ‘aha’ that happens in the arts.”
