My Chat With Garrison KeillorAlan S. ChartockWAMC President and C.E.O.
I recently had the real pleasure of spending some time at the WAMC studios with Garrison Keillor who is, of course, an immense star. He’s very tall and shows some wear and tear around the edges. He has tremendous intellect and he is sardonically funny. As you know he has the “Writer’s Almanac” every day and I love the show, it’s so interesting; a little bit of history, a little bit of poetry and he always provokes thought. Every once in a while he likes to push the envelope and if it involves something naughty it can present radio problems for us but so far we’re still breathing. You know those poets, always crossing boundaries.
He sat down in my office and he asked me a series of questions. He’s written lots of books so it wasn’t surprising that he asked me how many I had written. Straight faced I told him that I had written two. He asked what they were and I responded “Strengthening the Wisconsin Legislature,” and “Me and Mario.” He was fascinated with the Wisconsin book and I thought I detected a satisfied smile around his lips when I said it.

Greetings and salutations, WAMC Land. By now the Fund Drive is well underway and the volunteers are manning the phones, awaiting your pledges. So to whet your palate for the other side of fund drive, here are some teasers about what’s coming in the latter half of the month.
The beauty of the warm weather means that it’s grilling time! Whether it’s gas or charcoal, cooking outdoors is a great way to beat the heat. Make sure to join us for Food Friday on Vox Popon Friday the 13th to talk about your favorite foods to grill, marinades, and how long to cook your meats to get the perfect medium and still have those beautiful sear marks. (Side bar: a tablespoon of beer in your hamburger mix keeps it moist and adds good flavor.) Then on the 20th, Food Fridaytackles preserving and canning the bountiful fruits that the summer provides. We’ll get the 411 on sterilizing our jars, learn the difference between jam and jelly, and discover interesting combinations of berries and fruits to wow your taste buds.
We will be saying goodbye to one of our regular voices this month. Susan Barnett, the host of 51%, is leaving us for greener pastures. Do not fret, my pets, the show will be continuing and with a voice that you are already familiar with. Our Hudson Valley bureau chief, Allison Dunne, will be taking the reins and will have her debut show on June 19th at 8PM. Please help in welcoming her to WAMC’s National Productions.
And speaking of National Productions, The Book Show has some favorite authors this month.

He said that he does his work at 4 AM in the morning. I told him that I got up at 3AM but that when I have to write I do it the first thing. In fact, I told him, that I wrote my doctoral dissertation at that time. He wanted to know the subject and I told him, “Mental Health Policy Making in Three American States.” He said that wouldn’t do at all and he suggested something hysterically funny as an alternative title but that would just tick off the mental health professionals out there because it was politically incorrect so I’ll just let you fill in the blanks. Everyone wanted their picture taken with him and he made it clear that he would put his arm around the women supplicants but not the men. I was so disappointed. I had one picture taken with Garrison and Joe Donahue. They are both way, way over 6 feet tall and I’m at 5’5” so it’s pretty funny stuff.
When Garrison sat down in my office I said I had a question that he must get asked all the time. So I asked why he pronounces the word “Almanac” as “Al-manack.” He is really hysterical. He made it clear that this was the first time he had heard that question. I assured him that he was putting me on. Nope he said and then said that in the Midwest the word is pronounced Al-manac and that there is an Albany in Minnesota and that it is pronounced Al-bany. We Berkshirites know the drill when someone pronounces Alford (“All-ford”) as Al-ford. When he left he made it clear that he was putting me on he said, “Good-by A-lyn.” Ah well, I guess you had to be there. He really won my heart when he said that he loved the way that WAMC looked and compared us to some of the emporiums of public radio that are humungous show places but don’t equal the WAMC output.
He was also very interested in the limitations on opinion and freedom of speech that have been placed on radio broadcasters which, he said, would certainly have to change.
Make no mistake about it; Keillor has changed radio for the good. Each week he offers a comforting and good place to be on Saturday night. Sometimes we hear him in the car going somewhere, sometimes coming back and sometimes we turn the radio on and have a good time. He is blindingly bright. He talked about his one movie about a Prairie Home Companion and what it was like to work with the likes of our Meryl Streep and the more complicated Lindsay Lohan. While I don’t think that the movie turned out to be a blockbuster it was fun. But, efforts to make the show a TV product have not really worked out but maybe the movie and the TV experiment demonstrate that some of us have faces made for radio. - Alan

Understanding Rollover Options When Leaving a JobProvided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas E. Brockley
If you plan to retire or change jobs in the near future, you may face a number of difficult decisions. Among the most important is what to do with the money you’ve saved through your employer’s retirement plan.
As you prepare to make this important decision, your next steps should include understanding the distribution options available to you, their tax implications, and how each could impact your savings and goals. Many people lose valuable tax benefits or suffer tax penalties by delaying or avoiding decision-making, so it is important to know your options.
How much action is required on your part depends on the option you choose, the value of your account, and the protocol of the employer and/or investment firm managing the plan.
Stick with your previous planKeeping your investments in your previous employer’s plan may make sense if that plan has a broad range of investment options at good prices. In addition, many employer retirement savings plans offer a variety of tools that can help you figure out whether you're saving enough for a comfortable retirement and provide assistance for investing your savings.
But before you decide to stay with your old plan, be sure you'll still have access to all the plan options even though you no longer work there. Be aware that if your 401(k) balance is less than $5,000, your employer has the option to make you take your money out of the plan. In that case, you'll want to set up a rollover to an IRA or to the 401(k) plan at your new company.
Roll investments into your new employer's planIf you're moving to a new job and the company offers a retirement savings plan with a nice variety of investing options at low to moderate cost, then simply moving the money from your old employer to your new employer’s plan is probably the best course. That's especially true if you don't have a lot of other savings.
Rolling over to a new 401(k) usually gives you the right to take a loan out against the balance of your new account--you generally can't do that with an IRA or with a 401(k) balance you left at your old job. While it can be a nice perk, you should use it only for emergency situations.
If your income level is relatively low, you might consider moving some money to an employer’s Roth 401(k) if it is offered. You’ll pay taxes now, but avoid them when you withdraw the money. There have been changes to this retirement tool in 2013, so do some research to see if it makes sense for you.
Roll into an IRA If your new employer's plan offers less than stellar investment choices, you may want to roll your old 401(k) or 403(b) money into an IRA rollover account. Consolidating into one IRA could lower your fees and make it easier to rebalance your portfolio. To avoid having taxes withheld on this transaction, make certain your previous employer transfers the money directly to an IRA rollover account you've already set up.
You will have to roll over into a traditional IRA--one in which your money grows tax-free but you owe income tax on withdrawals. Later you can convert some or all of it to a Roth IRA if your adjusted gross income is below the annual federal limit ($127,000 for singles, $188,000 for married couples filing jointly in 2013).You'll pay taxes up front but make withdrawals for free.
Also, remember that if you don’t roll it over within 60 days, the entire amount will generally be considered taxable income.
You might want to consider this option if you plan to only reinvest a portion of your eligible rollover distribution or need short-term, temporary access to your retirement assets.
How you handle your distribution can have a major impact on the value of your retirement assets and the future well being of you and your family. The choice you make today can impact your financial security in your retirement years. As always, it is wise to consult with your financial advisor before taking final action.

Underwriter Spotlight
Shakespeare & Company
Launching its 36th season in the culturally-rich Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts in Lenox, Shakespeare & Company aspires to create a theatre of unprecedented excellence rooted in the classical ideals of inquiry, balance, and harmony; a company that performs as the Elizabethans did — in love with poetry, physical prowess, and the mysteries of the universe.
For a complete schedule of Shakespeare & Company events, tickets and much more information, visit www.shakespeare.org
